Well, if Apple proves to be Apple, all they did is change 1 little detail and that's that, and then they're going to charge up the wadzoo for it. So you're better off buying the next best thing if you can get it cheaper.

What are you plans on use for it? Multimedia?

Don't get an iMac. Get a MBA, MBP or Mac Mini but not a bloody iMac. The MBA is priced competitively, a Mac Mini is in fact pretty well priced for its specs (all crammed into that tiny box). An MBP is slightly overpriced but a solid machine overall. That's just me speaking; they're fine laptops, it's just that I know what they're built like and they're not worth it versus a ThinkPad or similar business laptops. I've taken a PowerBook G4, 2009 MBP (last C2D version) and 2011 (early one) apart and while the MBP's are better than a G4 there are still a lot of stupid fuckups; they didn't disable the turbos and underclock GPUs for no reason.
An iMac however is a laptop rolled into a desktop package with a screen that's terribly overpriced - taking the 27" as an example, Dell's U2711 does everything that does and then some (slightly better colour accuracy, slightly bigger gamut, slightly better black levels) - at half the fucking price of the Apple display. It's not portable like the laptops, only barely as powerful and compared to a Mac Mini you get maybe $200 of extra performance for the added price of what, $1200? Which fits with the $1000 display.

So my advice? Fuck the iMac and get one of the other ones. Especially the MBA and Mac Mini are priced properly.

I guess that running OSX on an intel-based computer hasn't really come a long way then?

A few years ago, I installed OSX (don't remember which version though) on an aging, HP Laptop and it worked flawlessly. I figured that, by now, we could all have some form of Apple OS on our Intel i5 and i7 based computers. Well, on laptops anyway since their components are fairly standardized across brands/models.

I wish I had the time to research this and see if it is still easily done. As it could be, I highly suggest that you look into it, you could always build a barebones system that is more powerful than any of the Mac's and simply install OSX. Then you could buy that ultra pretty Dell monitor and still be waaaaayyyy under what Apple would've charged. And you could also use it for gaming since you could dual boot into Win95/Win7.

But, since I don't know what the current state of the, "install Apple OS on basic intel-based machine," is, I cannot say whether this is a viable option or not. I just thought I'd drop this info and see if it could help. I hope it does. Then you can just send the extra cash my way.

God knows that hookers and blow ain't cheap here in the states.

edit:
Apparently my Asus g73sw can have OSX 10.7 installed...Now I must do this!

I have been running OSX (Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion) alongside W7 on my PC for 4 years now. And I plan on running it on the next PC aswell. I'd never buy an iMac and even less a MacPro.

I just like the environment for my work.

For those interested :

I dont use their install packs though, but it is a good place for noobs to start off.

+1 on Mac Mini, I have them at work, and they work great. I'd go with an i7 Mac Mini Server (it can be used as desktop PC, no worries).

Please do show me how you "get parts yourself" in this small form factor. You must not use "Will it Blend" blender.

Small form factor? What is this, the national handbag convention? Laughing

Is this the typical Apple user these days? Seems nothings changed then. Wink

Next thing you know, the iMac Verto, slim Mac standing on the edge (like the consoles have done since forever) is released for only $1399 and the MacFaggery will explode again. Cool Face

He it's your bullshit. You said you can buy "parts" and I asked you to show me. You didn't. It is great for work, where I have many computers and appliances, and the small form factor is very good for that. The form-factor is fantastic, doesn't matter if it's a Mac or not - I needed one for what I do. But idiots gonna troll, what can you do. I guess I should not be developing for iOS then because internet tough derps gonna maek jokes. Laughing

Even you second "good one" example is idiotic. Good luck "get parts yourself" of a gaming console and building it in that form factor for the price they ask for them these days.

Dude, Leo, you're such a hypocrite. You troll-bashed Apple and Macs as much as the rest of us. Now you're anal about people mocking Apple and have become a Macfag yourself. Laughing

Me, I'm a PC owner, "form factor" (which I never mentioned) is to me what honesty is to a politician.

No, I just go out of trolling from time to time. And small form factor has its advantages. You can't really build such small PCs by your own (Mac or otherwise), that is all I sad. You trolled and then called me butthurt. Laughing I still don't see what I have to be butthurt about? Your nonsense? Your inability to see beyond your personal PC? Right, real butthurt indeed.
You can call me what you want, but I am a fan of technology. When I am presented with such a tiny piece of hardware form factor (again, Mac or otherwise) which performs the way it performs, I cannot remain unimpressed. You are a cynical old fart who can't distinguish between trolling for the sake of trolling, and nonsense refuting with trolling. Wink

Syco asked about a Mac, Paul mentioned the Mini, and I confirmed it is a good piece of hardware. It is also among the cheapest Macs, which would make you happy no? The less spent on Macs, the better, no?
