Anyone have any experience with either of these ? I am looking at buying a new projector to go with my HTPC and am looking at one that is 3D ready via DLP Link or Nvidia 3D vision, and wondered what peoples views are on shutter glasses, DLP Link and what not.

Also any hints and tips would be great, I am new to 3D in that way so its going to be a learning experience either way

While I don't have any experience with DLP-Link Projectors, I do have a DLP TV and some DLP-Link 3D glasses (the XpanD and some off brand http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004RBV2J6). I also have used the Nvidia 3DVision type glasses and emitter extensively at a friends house (not the Nvidia, but IR transmitted nonetheless).

I like the DLP-Link stuff more but only because you are not reliant on any type of emitter or the broadcast strength of said emitter. If you, say, have six people over, the IR emitter might not be powerful enough to handle the distance that those people may sit apart and away from the TV. Also, you would have to run a cable to the emitter so it would sit in front of the people that are viewing the projected image (and this can ruin the aesthetic of your home theater setup).

Also, in my experience, the DLP-link glasses have a tendency to be a bit lighter (in weight and in lens coloration). I also haven't seen as much ghosting with DLP-link glasses as I have with the IR emitter type ones.

Also, keep in mind that if you don't plan on using the Nvidia 3DVision glasses and want to use a computer attached to the projector (I mean, why else would you do this, right?), you might need to purchase additional software. I use IZ3D and it has been satisfactory thus far. I just wish that their OpenGL support was better so I could play Minecraft in 3D. Oh well.

I hope this helps!

Interesting, I didnt know about this.

So if I use the DLP Link (what I am favouring, as it means I dont have to buy the Nvidia kit and what not) I will need to use that software (or similar) for 3D gaming.

I can only use (for example) Batman:AA in 3D via my Nvidia card if I buy the nvidia 3d vision kit ?

I have to replace my old projector, so its a needs must type situation the 3D side is a bonus, its just something I thought I would get whilst I was at it, as everything seems to have a 3D version now

Is the projector mainly for personal use, or will you regularly have other people to share it with? I had been planning for a new projector as well, but since I would've mostly used it just for myself, I'm now waiting for Sony's HMZ-T1 to get released and to find some place to give it a shot. IF it works as advertised, it would be much less of a hassle than a projector, and maybe even more immersive for gaming.

I thought that this was already done?

And, as a bonus

In all seriousness, that looks awesome, too bad it isn't released yet.

I think that the IZ3D driver actually overrides (?) the 3D effect from within the game. In other words, you don't have to enable the 3D ingame to get the 3D to work. Of course, their driver can be a bit glitchy, for example, I was trying to play TrackMania: Canyon in 3D and it brought my system to a standstill (not the one in my sig, my old 2xGTX295 system is the HTPC now). Then, I tried using the built in 3D in the game and it sucks, at least for my setup. I've yet to try Arkham Asylum with that rig, but I'll try to get time tonight so I can report back with my findings.[/quote]

Nah I have a wife and 3 kids, + a few people who come around, so it will be used by multiple people, the glasses are gonna cost a fortune on top :Y

If you have an Nvidia card (that supports it) you can fool the card into thinking you have the nvidia glasses and dongle using software by the way.

So you can use the nvidia panel for 3D, I just worked it out, if you want the info let me know

Sometimes it seems to fart about and play up on the first run, but once its been working once you only need to run enable stereo to initialize it again.

Have dumped the files here - http://www.multiupload.com/MGUWALPXET
