So....

I've never done this before and have always been skeptical and nervous to try and push my hardware since I know not that much about these things.

Basically here is my setup.

CPU: i7 960
GPU: HIS Radeon 6950 2GB
RAM: 6GB Corsair
PSU: 750W Corsair
OS: Windows 7 64 Bit

Everything is stock cooling (all fans no liquid cooling).

Is it even advised for me to do any overclocking (even if light) since I do not have liquid cooling? And if so where can I begin? I know i can do some things with AMD overdrive in catalyst control center.... thats about it...

I would recommend reading a few guides. Since I've recently (in the last year or so) oc'd my X58 rig, that is the only chipset that I would be able to help you with:

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=235 And don't worry that it's in the EVGA forums, most of the same chipset boards will have very similar features and you can just use those guides as general reference.

I also highly recommend going to a liquid cooled setup if you want to really unlock the full oc'ing potential of your machine. Unfortunately, that is usually a minimum of ~$200USD and can be a bit daunting at first (worrying about coolant leaks, animals drinking said leaks and dying, etc.). But, rest assured, that out of all of the liquid cooled systems that I've built, none of them have leaked past the initial 24 hour run of the pump to ensure that, if there are leaks present, I get them sorted before I power up the rig.

Hopefully this helps!

Forget water cooling, you simply wont need to go to such hassles.
Grab a decent air cooler and you will get some good overclocks.

alright, well i read some of those guys, I rly dont feel safe enough OCing the CPU just yet, maybe ill grab one of my more knowledgeable friends and have them sit down with me for that.

As for the GPU, I used the built in AMD overdrive in catalyst control center.

Going from 840 > 890
and from 1270 > 1300

seems to be holding up fine for now, might mess some more with it later.

GPU can take more than that Smile

Mine does 880/1375 on the stock 6950 voltage (those are 6970 clocks), haven't bothered going further because everything runs flawless as it is anyway. Don't think these things do 1GHz, but 900+ and 1400-ish should be doable.

Werelds,

I might just push the clock to 1375 then as you have, I have excellent airflow in my case so it should be do-able

Are you on stock cooling with everything, or liquid cooling?

nice, I'm on a NZXT Tempest, fucker has like 6 fans all over the case.

Going to push to GPU a little further tonight... and see what I get

Is there any test I can run to see if my OC is stable or producing any artifacts...etc? Or just run games maxed and monitor the temperature.... and speaking of GPU temp what would be a normal under load temp in Celsius?

They say BF: Bad Company 2 is a good test.

You can try all those benchmark programs but gaming will always be a good indication of successful clock.

You want a shader-bound game to test it with. When you overclock the "core" what you're really doing is overclocking the shaders; artifacts are produced either by errors on the shaders or memory corruption. A shader bound game will push both to the limit.

Crysis (1, 2 isn't shader bound anymore) or better yet: Stalker: CoP or BF3. BC2 can work, but for me that didn't push my card to its limits anymore Smile

Don't use Furmark and such, those things put a load on the GPU that you simply cannot reach with daily usage. A healthy temp is anything under 90 basically, GPUs can handle a lot; mine barely reaches 70 under full load now, although that's with a custom fan profile that keeps it quiet under 60 and then ramps up quite heavily to 45% straight away Smile
