Sin, read my edited post above. This really isn't true battlefield. Direction the DICE took has shifted, there were lot of decisions to make it more casual friendly, the most important gameplay change were the maps. They were clearly designed for 32/24p for consoles, and later they added one more CP for 64p on the PC. Majority of the map is unused, and is only to create some space for the jets to fly in - soldier on foot, or even vehicles, have no need to travel anywhere outside of the very centre of the map, where everything'sl happening. I wouldn't quite compare it to BC2, because I think DICE has been in tight spot, they were forced to cater to more casual audience, but still wanted to make it sequel to Battlefield 2, hence why they created the bigger maps to give the feel of Battlefield when you try that map first. But after some time you (or at least I) begin to notice some major differences in how the game plays, it's not quite as previous Battlefield games.

I agree it might not feel like BF2. The only thing they needed to do was to make better use of the larger maps and we would've been golden. Like I said in a previous post it would have been nice with two versions of the same map with CP spread out more in the "classic" BF2 version. Then server admins could decide which map to play.
Need to play more to really say anything about this though...
One thing I am really happy where it doesn't replicate BF2 is infantry combat. It was really bad in BF2.

Although flags do seem to be more clustered together than in BF2, I must say I didn't feel that Caspian 64 felt small or anything, there were plenty of times when I didn't see any enemies around (except jets flying in air) and had to go look for them..

That's a fairly good point. Caspian was pretty but you're right that there's far too much going on too close together. Compare that to say, El Alaheim back in the days of Desert Combat where you'd have 3 jets per team, the C-130, a Black Hawk, an apache, tanks, mobile rocket launchers and flags spread out on all sides of the map and you actually felt like you were in a real battle with fighting going on all over the place.
It's pretty amazing when you think of all the vehicles that were going on in any one game with the DC mod and what we have now.

You maybe got a lucky shot off or if you're really lucky someone would actually care and pick you up like tolanri describes. That however, was extremely rare if you weren't playing with a group of friends. Previous BF games were vehicle combat games, not exactly "battlefields".
Some people keep saying this isn't BFxxxxx or that it's BC3. It's neither, it's something in between. I for one am glad they made infantry playable and fun, because now at least I have something more amusing to play than CoD 19247234 with more killstreaks and backflipping retards getting lucky headshots |
I agree infantry combat in previous Battlefield installments wasn't the game's strength. However it's not a good way of fixing it by making distances between control points shorter. Only thing they needed to do was to fix hit detection and remove random deviation, combined with new weapon models, animation and sound to make it feel more enjoyable to shoot.
