http://defaultprime.com/2011/10/13/omg-it-looks-so-real1/

Weโ€™re always waiting for the next leap in realism when it comes to the visual quality of video games. The newest Unreal Engine is seriously impressive, but I think itโ€™s about to be surpassed before itโ€™s even begun.

Square Enix has recently revealed its newest Direct X 11 engine, Luminous. And holy crap does this look real.

Pretty promising Wink

Then they'll port it to console with DX9, ramp the bloom, err sorry, 8-bit "H"DR, and call it "better looking on console than it did on PC and optimized". Laughing

Looks too clean, if they really want it to be successful on next gen consoles they have to add more bloom, ssao and yellow. Cool Face

Also requires some post AA to smooth out any details textures might have and the FoV is obviously way too high Laughing

Good lighting, for real-time. I suppose this is the beta form of Tri-ace research.
It's very interesting how did they fit all the "real" BRDF in there, from the looks of it it shouldn't be running real-time on any hardware, today.

@ psorcerer: also no form of Anti-Aliasing in effect and it's shot at a very low resolution. I don't think it'll look as amazing at 1080p Smile

You cannot get such smooth material transitions without AA.
Some sort of morphological AA is there for sure.

Yeah considering I don't see anything that's dynamic in that scene it might all just be lightmaps. And honestly, they probably are.

Sure you can. There definitely is no post AA in effect (so that's neither FXAA nor MLAA nor SRAA nor..which others do we have?), you can see that by just looking at the fence. That's aliased as hell. Whether MSAA is in effect you can't tell because of the terrible resolution; however, if the video is to be believed, you can see TONS of aliasing everywhere.

Furthermore, the lighting so far looks baked, so what exactly is so impressive? 1080p moving footage please; still, baked lighting doesn't excite me, GPUs are powerful enough these days to handle fully dynamic lighting just fine.

Hey, for many of the likes here, RAGE was impressive because it ran 60 fps on consoles with fully baked engine, so... Laughing

These are damn good lightmaps, some game artists will sell their kidney for art pipeline that pre-bakes these.

AA is overhyped anyway.

Fully dynamic lighting? What are you talking about? There is no such thing.

The achievement of Carmack here is invention of virtual texture mapping. The engine itself is too straightforward to look good.
