There are a lot of different options out there right now that are improvements over reference. I have been looking at the Twin Frozr II from MSI, The Phantom from Gainward, DirectCU II from Asus. I am looking for a quoet card that will be able to do some overclocking as well. Anyone have any advice what to choose since they are all pretty much the same price? Thanks!

The DirectCU seems to be doing its job very well, seems very popular. Why the 580 though? A 570 or 6970 can handle everything the 580 at 120+ Euros less. The extra 256 MB memory on a 580 compared to 570 won't make a difference at 1080p, or are you planning to use it at 2560x1440/2560x1600?

Resolution used wont make that much of a difference on memory consumption that it warrants extra 256MB anyway.

I will be playing at 1920x1080p. I am trying to get a card that will run BF3 as close to 60 FPS as possible, that's why I chose it. I read this chart (that you actually posted again in the BF3 thread)
http://gamegpu.ru/Action-/-FPS-/-TPS/Battlefield-3-Alpha-test-GPU.html

There is a rather significant difference between 580 and 570. I appreciate your input though, might step it down a notch. Just sold my old rig with a 460 in it (but old platform otherwise) and I just want to see a significant increase in performance, but I don't want to spend stupid money of course.

Yeah there is a fair difference, but that's due to the tessellation. The 580's extra cluster can be used solely for that it seems (which indicates that the game is in fact GPU capped at that point already!), which is the only explanation I can think of that warrants such a big difference. If you look at the chart though, you'll see the cards at each price point lining up *exactly* - except for the dual-GPU solutions, which are broken atm. The performance increase between cards also exactly as expected every time, except for the 580.

Still, it is an alpha and it will improve a bit more I reckon. Minimum FPS of just under 50 for both the 570 and 6970 is very good; average is just above 60, meaning max will sit at around 75-ish.

I personally think the 580, 590, 6990 are all a waste of money. If you really want that kind of performance, you might as well get two cheaper cards and stuff them in SLI, because a pair of 560 Ti's is as expensive as a 580 but will boast significantly better framerates (this is assuming NVIDIA and AMD are able to resolve the issues it obviously has right now). At those framerates, microstuttering is also going to be a non-issue so meh Smile

It's a shame you already sold the old rig, because if I were you, I'd wait. Wait until you see numbers based on the beta, see how things change. Also allows the prices to drop a bit more, which they will around that time because it's the holiday season. Furthermore AMD might have something to launch in Q4 (it's unclear atm, noone knows what's going on with their process at TSMC) and we should have some more news about NVIDIA's cards for late-Q1 2012 as well Smile

On a sidenote: I'm liking what I see in Frostbite 2 so far. It's graphically demanding, optimised for both ends and even seems to be GPU capped, meaning the upcoming graphics cards on 28nm have a reason to exist!

Thanks a lot for a good and in depth post.

I am not that sad that I sold my old rig. I got a fair price for it and it was the old quad core. I want the new stuff with SSD and nice CPU:s and as can be seen by the same link we see there's a big difference between the two platforms. Sure the game is prolly GPU limited, but we also know there will be a difference. Smile

Getting the following:
MB: Asus P8Z68-V Pro
CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K 3,4Ghz
Cooling: Noctua NH-D14
Memory: 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 PC12800/1600MHz CL8
SSD: Corsair Force 3 Series 120GB
Storage: Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB
Case: Fractal Design Define R3 Black
GPU: GeForce GTX 580 (possibly 570)

I do not want SLI or Crossfire. I hate it. Too much hassle and microstuttering to boot. Don't want to work with different drivers and "fixes" for dual GPU. Not an option for me really. I want a really fast single card. What do you mean the prices will drop in Sept when the beta hits? There is no holiday then AFAIK.

I don't know man. The sane person in me says 570, but I know that I might regret it later when I knew I could have gotten better performance (and SLI is no option). Sure there is a premium for it, but I don't feel it is outrageous. I could get the 570 now and see what is released on the other side of the year.

No, I mean in late October when the game comes out. Holiday season always starts 2 months before the actual holidays at most stores Smile

In the end it's your choice of course, but I personally wouldn't do it; in fact, I never have gone for the top solution at such a premium. GF2 MX400, R9700 (non-pro), 6800GT, 8800 GTS-640, 5870, GTX 460 and now 6950 (got a feeling I left something out though hrm). The 5870 was just amazingly well priced (got it at launch for 300). Only "exception" were my 2 9800 GTX's, but the first one was an RMA for the 8800 and the second one an RMA for the first one :/

I've never had any issues running anything at max resolution (well..Crysis 1 not included) and I've pretty consistently gone up with resolution as new monitors came out. Only reason I'm not on 2560x<1440/1600> is because I've not yet seen a 27" monitor that I think is worth that kind of cash. That said, I'm not a fan of tessellation in the way it has been used so far, so unless they use it properly in BF3, I'll limit that to 8 samples; in most games so far they go as far as 16 samples which the naked eye can't even see in still frames, let alone when moving.

It's a good card anyway and it will do fine. Make sure to look at warranty though, I'm never buying a card without a standard 3 year warranty anymore after the bullshit with my 8800/9800's. My retailer has this as a store policy fortunately, but I'm not sure what Gainward do; most shops follow manufacturer warranty, which might be just 1 year.

Glad to see someone understanding what the fuck an SSD is for btw, instead of going "BUT I WANT IT FOR STORAGE". Fine choices you made there for the other parts as well.

Which PSU are you getting to power that? I highly recommend the new Seasonic based units, as they're all based off the new silent platform which only spins the fan up when needed. Seasonic's own X-series is bloody brilliant obviously (got an X-650 myself), the Corsair "TX V2" ones are also based off that platform.

Yeah, I've mostly gone for the card a step below the top, usually good value (or at least OK in price/perf). All cards here in Sweden leave at least 36 months so I'm all good there.

I kept the PSU from my old computer which is a Corsair 750W, more than adequate and really quiet as well. Seasonic is good as well, I actually think they are made in the same factories but not sure.

Yea SSD will be really nice, looking fwd to it.

The decision on 570 or 580 will be made on Monday, then I will hear what they buy the cards for and can decide. If it is under 100 dollar difference I will get the 580. If not I will prolly go with the 570. Been looking forward to BF3 for many years and I really want to play it with all the eye candy.

Good. I never had any issues with videocards until that nonsense, never letting it happen again Razz

Corsair doesn't make PSUs, they only assemble and label them. Some of theirs are Seasonic, mainly the VX450, TX V2, HX-650 and the whole AX series except the 1200W one. All the other Corsair units are CWT builds; not bad, but not Seasonic either Razz

Trust me, you'll fall in love with it the moment you see how ridiculously fast you can boot, start applications, etcetera. I fell in love with mine anyway, rebooting in less than 30 seconds from Ubuntu into Windows is just awesome, and rather than having to wait for some shit to load, you can just open applications straight away

The name of the PSU is Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750W. So it's not the TX2 but it has gotten really good reviews, both professional and consumer so I feel it's all good.

Some friend also told me something about some semi-raid on the Motherboard I have so i can have cache on another disk. Not really sure what he was talking about TBH but it sounded good.

Can't wait to place my order next week and build the bastard and start prepping it for Beta launch for BF3. Maybe play through Crysis as well, never got around to that.

This week only where you save 50 pounds, making it quite cheap compared to some other 580's and this is a factory OC'ed one with some nice cooling.

Thanks.. Can tell you I ordered a 580 GTX after all that I got a pretty good deal on. An asus Direct CU II 580 GTX. But the piece of shit is already broke after just a days use.

Just my luck getting a defective card. Going to go for a Gigabyte version instead, they look really nice.

ouch that sucks. Sad
the stock cooled cards have a excellent vapour cooler on them so don't shy away from those. the aftermatket coolers can actually be worse for both noise and heat dumped in your case. there is a reason they are cheaper lol

Sorry to hear that your new card is dead. I've been seeing more and more problems with Asus mobo's and GPU's in the last five years or so. The last Asus mobo I bought was the, ill-fated, Striker Extreme. They loved to eat RAM, even when I undervolted and underclocked it, the mobo would still chew it up. I RMA'd four sets of memory and two mobo's before I decided to go with EVGA. Not that they are the best, but they have some of the best customer support that I've ever seen. Now, I only buy EVGA stuff, but still have fond feelings for MSI (as I used to use them exclusively), and have seen many good things come from Gainward. Here's to hoping that you get a good card next time and that you can enjoy some BF3 in all it's glory!

I've got three of these fuckers, and yes, they are absolutely sexy. Also, the little EVGA logo on the side (not the bottom) lights up (but that's not the reason that I bought them).

And before anyone gets their jellyragepanties in a wad (because they think that I don't need 3 of them), I do a lot of freelance CAD work and also have helped design some 3D MRI software for a local heart surgeon that utilizes the CUDA architecture to render the images, so I didn't have to pay for them entirely out of my own pocket (and what little I did pay was a tax deduction). And I game the fuck out of those cards.

As far as performance is concerned, I haven't had any problems so far. I also have not ever had any problems with my water-cooling rig(s). Even when I am running these cards through 3DMark 2011, the temps only reach ~40°C (and they are looped in series from top to bottom).

Why bother with 580 when you can get the 570 for cheap and overclock it to run faster and cooler than the 580? Wink

I am looking to replace the 480, not sure with what yet. Don't want to put a second 480, as it would generate a lot of heat, noise and put too much stress on the PSU (GTX 480 is a first generation Fermi = shit).

The Gainward GTX 580 Phantom w/ 3GB has caught my attention lately. BF3 with everything on max and AA takes GB according to tests.
