At least GTX 560Ti or AMD 6950. Preferably a Phenom II 955 or higher and if possible a six core one like 1055T. Ram is fine.

I do not really see a reason to switch to a faster AMD processor though And an Intel setup would be just too expensive as I'd have to switch the mobo too
A 6950 sounds very sexy, but being priced ~190€ is quite some money

I can feel your pain Pumpy
I think you'll be able to play at 1080p, although only at low details, aka 'console settings' (or medium-low if the game won't be badly optimized)
P.S. I'm jelly of your Athlon II X4 640! ;P

I have 2x4850 on a x3 720@3,4ghz and I kinda feel you m8, not sure if I'll be able to play BF3 on the same resolution as you and, like you, 200€ on a new gfx card is money I can't spend right now (fucking piece of shit country ruled by pussy ass bitch mudafuckers)... btw thx for rescuing our asses
anyway, the thing I learned since I play pc games is that you should wait and see, most games play well without some bells and whistles that often are pointless or unnoticeable, maybe that'll be the case with those (still awesome) 4850 gfx cards...

If they fixed the favor for nvidia cards, then I think the 4850 should be enough for low settings at good framerates on 1920x1080

the market is cruel :/
yesterday you install new card and the day after it is old:( , but in the other hand we are happy to see better graphic and performance within the years. the thing is to find the golden path to money and performance for your needs.
i payed around 215€ for gtx560 ti oc (40€ extra cause of the oc edition), and after the installation last night i played hard reset (my 8800gts crashed on high and bearly could handle it) and finaly i enjoyed the game:) , no problems and also i tested dead island an it was great and the expirience made me forget the money i payed cause i enjoyed the new product:)
p.s probably i will remember the money at the end of the month when i will have to pay my credit card bill

Of course, it will be. It won't be jaded at all if you even combine it with a 6950.
And +1 on the 6950 as well. Though, I don't know if it's one of the new batches that don't allow modding it up to a 6970 through a simple BIOS flash and edit.

No I don't want crossfire, as crossfire = new mainboard + new PSU
The 6870 is 120 euros cheaper than the 6950, is the 6950 really worth it, was what I was asking

well..it is also question of taste , some don't like ati colors and the oposite.
btw 500W should be fine for the 6870 (it is the minimum for this card and if you have good psu that realy produce 500wat you will be fine:)

My 500W power supply should be sufficient for my system with a 6870 right? |
500W is plenty* even for dual 6870's, you wouldn't need a new PSU. And no, they're not more bang for buck, they're about equal bang for buck. The 6950's performance matches its price quite well.

Unless your motherboard only has 1 PCI-E slot, you don't need a new motherboard. Unlike SLI, CFX has no requirements on the chipset/manufacturer - as long as you have two PCI-E slots, you can do CFX.
As to whether it's worth it, depends on the game. Shader bound games (Stalker for example) benefit massively, you gain like 30%. That said, a 6870 is already a huge upgrade for you, it's about twice as fast as your 4850.
As for Crossfire or no crossfire: no way to tell until BF3 is out and we see some benchmarks. If AMD have kept up their streak of #winning, it'll run flawless on CFX, but until it's out, we won't know.

Well, I'll at least wait until the beta. If my 4850 fails miserably (what I expect) I'll go for an 6870 thx again bros, you are like spiders to me

Its worth the money tho, i upgrade from Phenom2 x4 955BE, to i7-2600k, now the 2600k might be too exensive, but the 2500k should be doable.
Its a big fucking upgrade that i did, and totally worth the money invested.
Instead of buying an (kinda cheap and old, cuz i have the HD6870 for a year now) graphicscard, invest a little more and get the cpu/mobo/ram upgrade man.
Youll pull more from that then just a GPU upgrade.

I think my expectations on a system are different A passable mainboard for a 2500k ~90€, the processor itself 190€ -> 280€ and a 280€ gfxcard = 560€
I paid ~340€ for my whole system, I'm not going to blow that money for an upgrade and marginal performance gain. (and I do mostly work and surf on my computer and just SOME gaming)
And yeah, I go for the 6870 because it is cheap and a good addition to my current system
