Anyone uses one of those fancy multiple filehost services like Rapid.Gen that allow you to download from many different filehosts? Price wise it's fairly cheap, around 5-10$ a month and in theory sounds great. On the other hand, I've read about all sort of problems people have...advice would be appreciated.

i think those get widely abused, it sounds good in theory but new releases you can find on any host really.
Its only tricky for rare movies or games that have been uploaded 3-4 years ago usually on rapidshare and megaupload, though they both offer decent free download bandwidth.
Fileserve or filesonic are the way to go atm

There are forums with very unique stuff which only use services like FS/RS/WU. Usenet is only useful for generic stuff.

WU is evil
RS was good but with those new points system they lost a lot of users :\
I used to have RS, but I haven't extended my subscription...
Having a premium acc can be great, but lately I can find everything on torrentz and dl'ing series from one link non premium is also good for me.
Then again I have only 1 Mbit/s connection so that sucks from the beginning

I was talking about non-English stuff in this case. Usenet is also extreemly polluted now if you're looking into old stuff. You have to sift through a bucket of shit to get what you want. Luckily fakes are easy to spot with newly released stuff.

Usenet is fine or rather used to be alot better for stuff, ive noticed in the last year alot of stuff I used to get regular with nzb's just does not appear no more on usenet search engines..
Im talking mainly about 3D Tutorial dvd's - one at one time could get anything you could think of, now its just dying out for such great stuff.. I would not really call the world of 3D modeling niche either, but I guess most have more money than I do for such goodies

I use Usenet more than anything else, but for rare stuff and the largest inventory, nothing beats private, specific torrent trackers.

why are people paying for warez?
10-12 years ago i was on private top FTP sites with 100-500Mbit, ocassionally a Gbit with TB of storage (we are speaking of the years 2000 here...). It cost me nothing then, just have some connections in 'the scene' and be part of it.
After i get out of the scene, i just had some idle accounts on some FTPs and some hacked usenet account i used.
10 years later I find the same quality on a crappy site like thepiratebay or free rapidshare (boohoo i have to wait 10 minutes). I get 3MB download speeds regularly, I can find old stuff, I can find dutch stuff, I can find old mp3 albums. So why pay anyway? It is not like it is hidden these days.
there are tons of public http sites with mp3s or ISOs. you can just google the name of the file and you will find at least 10 public http links. just click it.
