I'm loving my kindle3, using calibre as my essential converting tool.

My friend has Kindle, and that thing rocks. You can put all kinds of PDFs on that, it doesn't matter
It really is like reading a book.

I usually borrow some old sony from the library. Maybe check if it's possible to try one before you buy? The one i borrow is only good for reading fiction. I'm not sure any ebook reader is good for text books though.

PDF is just about the shittiest format for ebook readers, avoid whenever possible. sffebooks.com is a good site if you're into speculative fiction.

I have a kindle3 as well and love it. you don't need to convert to PDF you just convert to .mobi with calibre and books transfer over fine.
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one

Why didn't you wait for full color screens?
As for screen quality, all e-ink machines are great for reading. I had a Sony reader for a while, great quality screen. I sold it because it was too limited though, a monochromatic device just for books is not worth it imo.

garus wrote: | How long before full color e-ink screens appear?
I have a Galaxy S for full color pleasure. I only need something bigger for reading. |
I've read where there are already full-color screens, but the refresh rate/quality of the image it produces is complete rubbish. I've also seen color e-ink used to show video which, again, looked like rubbish. I'd say in three to four years, max, we should be seeing excellent quality color e-ink. Remember, it took them about ten years to fully perfect the current gen of e-ink. And also keep in mind that anything backlit is driven at a frequency and thusly will cause eye strain. Unless of course it's something like 240Hz, which isn't possible for an electrically-produced light source afaik.
So, I would say that a monochromatic e-ink digital reader is fine for now. I've got a Kindle2 and a Kindle3 and love them both equally (although the Kindle2 is now my wife's and as such as much shittier fiction on it currently instead of the Bradbury, Cussler, Philip K. Dick fare I used to have on it).

There aren't any color e-ink screens yet afaik, but they're on their way end this year or beginning 2012. I wasn't talking about video, e-ink will never work for that since new tech like AMOLED will overrule it in that department when it matures. Besides that, watching movies on an e-ink screen would completely negeate its purpose, which is the very long battery life and the ease on the eyes. Color e-inks will have long battery lives, no energy consumption when the screen is static and no backlight, just like the monochromatic screens.
I think you're confusing color e-ink with AMOLED screens.

Why would i need colour if I'm going to read a book? Is it for newspapers or childrens books?

Why limit yourself to simple books? Think about illustrated papers, comics, educational books.

Had a Kindle 2 for about a year. They are a really great ebook readers. But i have switched to an Ipad. Screen is not as nice for reading but its better for traveling as i use it for mail and such.
