So, I usually leave my PC on during the night, as I like to watch things like Giant Bomb's Quick Looks before I fall asleep, so it's pretty much running on every night.

I woke up today, and I noticed that the PC was still turned on, but the monitor was pitch black. The keyboard and the mouse were working as well.

I reset the PC, only to find that the monitor doesn't display anything.

Well, actually, it displays the boot up screen (press del to enter setup etc), but when I press del to enter BIOS I can't see anything, nothing is displayed.

If I don't press delete, the PC boots up normally, I can hear the HDD working and the PC actually boots up (I can hear the log on sound and can click around blindly).

My room has an open window basically 24/7, and it is like 8 Celcius outside in the morning, so I doubt it is an overheating issue, especially since it never happened before and the case is very well ventilated.

I should also note that the monitor doesn't display things like "input not detected", it is turned on but is just pitch black.

So I am wondering if it's a GPU/Motherboard or a monitor problem. Help me out guys. I tried unplugging and plugging the cables again, to no avail. I haven't opened up t he case yet.

Try resetting the bios by taking out the battery or using the jumpers.
Also try blowing all the dust out of the case, I've had some weird problems happen just due to dust.
Let it cool off and try running it again later as see if that changes anything.
Can you try going into safe-mode? (Doubt it will work)

I doubt it's the monitor if the boot up screen is displayed. GPU/mobo sounds like a good guess but I don't think there's a way to know for sure without trying to replace them.

Does your motherboard report an error? Usually this is via onboard or case speaker (make sure it's hooked up), or by a LED screen on the motherboard itself. Motherboard manual can tell you what the error is.

Nope, no error sounds. As I said, the PC boots up normally, but monitor doesn't display anything. I can move around Windows blindly.

Also, I just noticed that my case has a guarantee seal on it, and if I break it I lose the warranty. Rage I'm not sure if I want to open it now.

EDIT: I should clear up that the boot up screen is displayed just promptly, and then it disappears into blackness.

Also I can see the "logging in" screen for just a second, so it seems that the GPU is working. All the colors are ok at that screen. But then it disappears.

Alright, now I'm pretty sure it's just a monitor issue. Laughing

There's a button on my monitor that switches displays, right? If I push it, my normal PC screen appears, with everything working, but then disappears again.

So I thought- let's turn on my XBOX (which is plugged into my monitor). I switch the displays using the said button, X360 menu appears...and then disappears into blackness. That pretty much confirms that the monitor is the problem, since now the PC isn't even on, and it doesn't display XBOX either.

Damn, that's a relief. Laughing

My theory may be wrong though(but I'm 99% sure that it's the monitor), so keep on posting guys.

Yeah I'd say it's the monitor 100% then. What monitor is it? Might be easily fixable.

Also try different monitor inputs, HDMI, DVI, VGA or whatever else you have.

Pretty sure it's your monitor, it sounds like it can't refresh anymore. Never heard of that happening to anyone, but hey, there's a first for everything right? Laughing

PC is connected via analog(VGA), and XBOX by digital(HDMI) output. Neither of them work, so I presume the monitor just died.

The monitor is a ViewSonic VG1930wm.

My screen was dying (not the same problem), and I managed to fix with with 3$ worth of capacitors. So don't just throw it away Razz

See if it works properly if it cools down a bit. Might be just the backlight.

EDIT: And why was your monitor on the entire night? Razz Set it so it shuts off after half an hour. LCDs are only rated for a number of hours. Especially older ones don't have all that much lifetime.

Yeah, if it doesn't accept both sides of the fence (A/D) then it's definitely an internal problem, as VGA and HDMI/DVI/DP differ with clock generation Smile

If you have a close neighbor, whose a friend of yours, you can switch monitors for a week or so, and see what happens.

SAME SHIT HAPPENED TO ME!!!!

Except in my case a bolt of lightning took out my primary GPU lol. Well actually the lightning took out my television and my primary GPU happened to be connected to the TV via HDMI so the GPU stopped working as well. Its the only explanation as to why every other component in my PC still works perfectly.
