Valve's policy is fine as within it, it states this:
"Choice/Opt-out
Valve gives users the option of discontinuing receipt of promotional email communications from Valve. Instructions for discontinuing receipt of promotional email communications from Valve will be provided in such subsequent email communications to users."
Origin does not give you that option. I think you will find that this is the main gripe people have with Origin's EULA and ToS. |
That's about opting-out of receiving promotions/news email from the digital provider. Here we're talking about the disclosure of the info the provider takes from your computer, a much more important issue |
Shit, sorry, copied the wrong part haha.
This is the part I meant to paste.
""Individual information" is information about a user that is presented in a form distinguishable from information relating to other users but not in a form that personally identifies any user or enables the recipient to communicate directly with any user unless agreed to by the user in advance of such communication. This information may be used to improve Valve's products and online sites, for internal marketing studies, or simply to collect demographic information about Valve's users.
Valve may use customer contact information provided by users to send information about Valve, including news about product updates, contests, events, and other promotional materials, but only if the users agree to receive such communications. Except in the cases described below, Valve will not share personally identifiable information with any third party unless the user agrees to such disclosure in advance."

Ok, as the text says, there are exceptions to that. One of them is when Valve refers to its "associates", the equivalent of the "agents on our behalf" in the EA's privacy policy. Of course Valve states that they give the customer the option to not send their info to one of these associates, but what that actually means is that you have the option of not buying/subscribing/downloading whatever the associate is offering you, you will certainly have on EA's Origin as well (please don't tell me you think that EA's will force us to buy things even if we don't want/need them).
So in the end, it's the same shit with a different smell. Valve seems to be more explicit and less vague (which is the better approach of course), but the meanings are pretty much the same.

Personally identifiable information protected under this privacy policy and collected from users may be done in conjunction with associates under agreement with Valve. If an associate of Valve is collecting such personally identifiable information within one of our products or online sites, Valve will make users aware of this at the time the information is gathered. For example, product registration data for Half-Life is collected by Sierra Entertainment. If a user does not want to provide this information, the user may choose to opt out of providing this information. Additionally, if providing the information is a requirement of usage, the user may decline to use that particular service or product. When possible, Valve will make a reasonable effort to direct users to the privacy polices of these associates. Valve's privacy policy does not extend to associates of Valve.

Thats where you are misunderstanding all this. It clearly states that anything related to Valve or the developers of Valve's products is included inside Valve's and Steams EULA and ToS. What they state, and clearly might I add, is that they do not share the information with companies and publishers outside of the Valve range of products. They also say that they do point you to privacy policies of their associates products that are not related to Valve, and that Steam's and Valves policy does not apply to these products.
Origin states the information collected from the user, can or will be sent to third parties.
Huge difference there mate. To summarise, Valve collects information and keeps it within Valve's products to help it's services. EA collects information from the end user and gives them to whom they see fit. That is the difference and until EA gives the end user an option to opt out of it, it will remain a problem for them.

Actually I just realized where our argument unnecessarily comes from.

I don't know if you read the new updated EULA for Origin, but they removed the part where they clearly stated sharing your info with third parties. Of course as Chiv said, they still remain vague as opposed to Valve who are very explicit regarding their policies (which I prefer and totally support).
Even so, I still see the same semantics in both Valve and EA policies. But I guess it's just a matter of opinions, just like it's a matter of opinions if you think it's not worth it to install a second digital provider software in your computer to play a game you like.
I'm a big fan of Steam and Valve is my number 1 developer ever. I would rather play Battlefield 3 on Steam and every new game I like as well. But I understand EA wanting to take advantage of this huge game coming out in two months, an unique opportunity for promoting their own digital store that might not repeat for a while. To be honest, that won't stop me from playing my most awaited game of 2011.

At work they have quad 6970's and Phenom II x6 1090T, running the alpha for further debugging, game runs flawlessly .
The beta will represent "almost" the final build's quality, since it will pass certification and go in the markets .
Had a chance to see a coleague playing the SP today, a mission in the metro, COD style, throwing terrorists down and taking their guns, seemed superb and I hope ill verify it in a few weeks .
So, it will run better than BC2 on your 4870 .

Well I just oc'ed my gtx 570 to 580 levels in anticipation for the BF3 beta, so I hope I get to max out settings. We still have to wait to see what kinds of AA they will be offering though, as none was present in the alpha build.
