Yep.

Note that even at 8.3 GHz it still does SuperPi 80% slower than a 2600K running at its stock 3.4 on just a single core without HT Wink

Still though, Intel predicted 10 GHz CPUs in 2011 somewhere back in 2000, obviously not. At least we're still on track with Moore's Law!

Edit: Yeah lol, I literally had just pressed "View new posts" and it was on top so

There are already 2nm transistors ( http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/06/2nm-quantum-transistors-are-the-worlds-smallest/ ). And by the time the silicone reaches its limit of shrinking down in a few years, the ones in the article would've already proven to be reliable for mass production.

I don't think that we'll see the 10GHz normal computers, because there are quantum limitations which cannot be overthrown.

But that's why the future lies with quantum computers, spintronics etc. Wink

That depends if we'll be able to move to spintronics or quantum computers directly from silicone. We might use some other material that might allow us higher frequencies that ones achieved today on silicone.

Well spintronics is already being used to some extent (iirc my professor who has a knowledge about these things mentioned that Apples ipod's were already using these things) in SSD's.

Silicone and Germanium are the basis of semiconductor industry because of their properties but also because of their abundance on Earth. The trouble with other elements is that they may have cool and good properties, but they might be scarce.

All in all the future is something to be to be looking forward to, at least in the technological advancement, and were it'll lead us Smile
