Yeah, NZ and EU have been fucked on Steam for a while now (it's not Valve's fault!!! Publishers set the prices!! Leave Valve alone!!!!!!!!!!! /defender) It really is quite pathetic. The only option is to just have an American friend gift it to you.

What is the price retail AU-based stores sell it (if there are any)?

eb games is our gamestop equivalent, there's also GAME

http://ebgames.com.au - exclusive = $108 / standard = $88
http://game.com.au - standard = $98 (PC = $78 )

Thanks to little derp kids who keep paying these insane prices

So:

http://www.ebgames.com.au/pc-150716-RAGE-EB-Exclusive-Edition-PC $88
http://www.game.com.au/rage/pc-games/RAGEPC $78 but it says it's a special price, and normally it costs $89.95
http://www.game-lane.com.au/pc-mac-games/3193-rage-pc.html $49.95 but with a note that again, it's a special discount from the $89.95 price.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/9200/ $89.99

Looking at those.. isn't it obvious Zenimax/Bethesda wants to sell RAGE for $89.99 to AUS citizens? And it's not a random price Valve set?

Pretty sure if I check the prices for Deus Ex: Human Revolution I'm going to discover that AUS stores are selling it for the same price as Steam AUS, or if they are offering it at a discounted price, the original price the publisher set is going to be the same as Steam AUS.

In fact I'm going to do that just now.

http://www.ebgames.com.au/pc-150599-Deus-Ex-Human-Revolution-PC $78
http://www.game.com.au/deus-ex-human-revolution/pc-games/DHRPC $64, discounted from the regular $79.95
http://www.game-lane.com.au/pc-mac-games/2862-deus-ex-3-human-revolution-limited-edition-pc.html $49.95 discounted from $79.95
http://store.steampowered.com/app/28050/ $71.99 discounted from $79.99

And.. it's a perfect match!

Damn. Those prices sure look like an incentive to an ISO demo first. I doubt they will release a demo prior to release. Why is Steam listing it as 49.99 then?

We've already established GameStop and GAME are both rip-offs, whereas the other stores are significantly cheaper than Steam and GS/GAME - so your point fails, as always. Does your Valve fanboyism know no bounds? Valve are crooks, plain and simple.

This + considering they're just DIGITAL copies and should cost way less than retail boxed ones by principle at least...

I could say the same about your Valve hatred.

It's right there: the publisher has set a $90 price:

Yes, the store has a -massive- discount. No, $50 wasn't the original price. The publisher told them to sell it for $90.

You DO know what an RRP is don't you? Rolling Eyes Which is exactly why Game-Lane can sell the fucking thing for $50 instead of $90. If the publisher "set" the price at $90, nowhere would be able to sell cheaper than that! Rolling Eyes You are physically incapable of admitting that Valve could possibly ever do anything wrong (funny, the same could be said about Blizzard and Apple fanatics)

Once and for all; my opinion and belief is that VALVE set the prices on their own platform, the publishers may have a guideline (RRP, look it up) but it's VALVE that adheres to it.

The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP), list price or recommended retail price (RRP) of a product is the price which the manufacturer recommends that the retailer sell the product. The intention was to help to standardise prices among locations. While some stores always sell at, or below, the suggested retail price, others do so only when items are on sale or closeout.

No, the industry are crooks Smile

I've said it before, Valve does it as well (Portal 2 is still on the 1 EUR == 1 USD scam), but please show me a *single* retailer (or more accurately: publisher controlled sales point) in the EU (UK doesn't count for obvious reasons) that doesn't go along with this region-specific pricing instead of proper currency conversion? I know in NL there aren't any at least, not one.

UK are the big exception within the EU. For the UK stores that ship abroad, they usually apply proper currency conversion, but they also come with the crappy shipping times due to the awesomeness that is the Royal Mail. Even though something like Play.com is not *technically* part of the UK (bullshit as far as I'm concerned Razz), they use their currency and they rely on the Royal Mail just the same.
Getting something shipped from the UK to NL takes at least 7-10 work days; if I order from Germany I'll have it within 3-4 at most. I've even ordered from fucking Taiwan before (replacement fan for an HP laptop, lol Very Happy) and that got to me in 11 days.

I still don't get why the UK isn't considered as part of the EU (and no, it's not limited to Euro countries, so it's not currency based), but considering every single publisher and almost every game is priced like this, the blame is on the industry as a whole, not any company or party in particular.

From 2008 - when Valve automatically set 1:1 prices, this is what The Witcher devs had to say:

Quote:
Vandal (CD Projekt): Just remember, Steam doesn't necessarily set the prices for games on the site -- they've asked publishers about the prices they'd like to sell games at. Publishers have to approve the pricing, or they have an option of changing it. With The Witcher: Enhanced Edition we asked them to lower the price in Europe (well, Eastern Europe, where the game is available on Steam) to be in-line with market expectations. Valve sent us an email basically saying "here's what we're doing and here are the prices we're planning to use -- let us know if you need them adjusted" and I'd suspect that other publishers must have gotten that same email.. particularly considering the fact that we only have one game on Steam, so we're a minor player.

And you don't see how THAT very line states it is Valve who set the prices and they ask the publishers if they want them adjusted? Good eye. Whatever, I'm not wasting my time YET AGAIN on this pointless bullshit argument. You believe Valve are the victims here, I believe they're the instigators.

Let's just leave it at that Rolling Eyes

(oh and FYI; as for my "Valve hatred" - yes, you're so right. Me and my €2000+ Steam account definitely hate them)

Well me and my €200 Steam account definitely not show unconditional love Laughing

The above is from 2008 - when Valve automatically applied 1:1 rates and informed the publishers of that and that they can adjust it how they wish.

It doesn't say that Valve is the one that sets the prices in the first place in general - they had to do it only once, and of course the prices could be changed by each publisher.

And 2D Boy took the opportunity and instead of lowering it like The Witcher devs did, they raised World of Goo's price even higher than 1:1, and when asked why they replied:

Quote:
Our agreement with our European retail publisher obligates us not to undercut retail prices. No publisher would sign a retail deal without ensuring that.

Rage currently for me is the most anticipated shooter.
I'm really looking forward to playing it because it seems a little old school as contrasted with all these 'modern warfield' shooters which I personally hate.

Hope it won't be a disappointment.

Right behind Stalker 2 for me; when they announced it initially it sounded pretty mediocre tbh, but the preview/sneak peek stuff have been pretty promising so far.
