I will buy my first car in August, but i just cannot decide what it will be.
I'm looking for a used car, costing no more than 9500 Euros, no older than 2007 and with a mileage of 70000 km max. It should be a reliable car, large enough to carry a family of four.
The cars i'm thinking about :
- BMW 116 / 118
- VW Golf 6
- Ford Focus
- Hyundai I30
- Toyota Auris
- VW Jetta
Any suggestions / advice ? Also are french cars any good ? (Renault Megane, Peugeot 407)

Jetta or Golf obviously. BMW's can be expensive to maintain especially if bought second hand, Focus is nice but mostly plastic inside, completely dismiss Auris and I30

Forgot to add : Opel Astra, Toyota Corolla.
The problem with Jetta is that it's hard to find a good one that matches my money. Most of them are 10k+ Euros.

Stay away from Renault. Good engines for the most part, fucking aweful cars. Fucking Dacia, their budget-brand subsidiary thing make better cars :/
Golf 6 and its derivatives also have some minor electronical issues (lambda probe is what I've heard most), but if your car is recent enough VW will fix it for free. Other than that, it's VW, solid as a rock.
As for Peugeot: I'm quite happy with my 206, very reliable car and drives very well. From what I've heard and read from former fellow 206 drivers, the 307 and 407 have the same good handling, same reliability. I've been considering selling my 206 myself and either get one with a bigger engine (1.4 8v @ 75 BHP is lacking ) or a 307. Not a lot of cars handle anywhere near as well as my 206, gonna be painful when I actually do get rid of it
Just make sure to check all the panels are in order, first thing to go with Peugeot strangely is the trunk. Common spot is on the underside of the window on the hatch
Citroen I don't know much about, mainly because I think they're all fugly
Astra and Corolla are just very solid allround cars; personally not a fan of either Focus or the i20/i30, but my neighbour and my uncle have a Focus and i30 respectively, not heard any complaints yet.

9500 Mk6 Golf ?
not in your price range
get a TDI btw, Mk5 Golf 2.0 140HP
or even a damn Passat
also, no to Astra, you'll regret buying it after you'll see how shit start failing (fuel pump is 100% faulty)
my advice, get something old and cheap
no abs, no power steering and you'll learn to appreciate everything alot better and know how to fiddle with your car, at the very least know the basics and you won't get screwd by a mechanic.

If you want something reliable, get a toyota or a honda. There are other options, but these are hard to match. You can see for yourself in reliability statistics. French and italian cars are always among the worst in that aspect (altough I like them for other reasons).

i have a different mindset. why spend 10.000 euros on a SH car when with the same amount of money you can get a new one. granted..its not gonna be a bmw but its new and you know u wont have any problems with it. there are quite a few nice cars that fill this under 10.000 requirement

Sorry, ninja edited my post
Suspension used to be Citroen's strong point, but also their downfall because it hurt their cornering ability. I'm not a speed freak, but I do drive in a "sporty" manner so for me that just sucks
Not sure how the current Citroens drive though, perhaps they're better. I'm still very happy with my 206 though, don't know why all those "reliability" things say it's an unreliable car. Mine is going on 11 years old now, only major problem (aside from someone kicking in my fucking mist lamp :fuuuuuuu:) I've had was my exhaust, and that's because the previous owner fucked with it (had massive holes and aweful welding). I'm starting to notice some oddities while driving, but most likely nothing a good cleaning of the shafts and stepper motor can't fix. I do have a manual drive though (fuck automatic transmissions), and I know the automatic ones have some electrical issues so perhaps that's where the numbers come from.
Anyway, to get back on topic: try some out yourself BloodySpy. You can already tell from me and Frant that we both value different things in the way a car drives, and you're no different. What works for one person won't work for another, especially when it comes to how the clutch works. I for example prefer one that does something over the full length of the pedal, not just 0.5cm at the top or bottom; my mum on the other hand is the exact opposite. Same goes for the brake pedal, I like my pedal to properly apply pressure over the full length. Note that even for a single model the pedals will differ between two cars, but the general characteristic will be similar. For some people these differences even mean they simply can't drive with some cars (personally I don't give 2 shits, I'll get in anything and drive away if I have to ).
What kind of car did you take your lessons in?

Well, during lessons i had a VW Polo, 1.2L; it was ok for learning, light and maneuvrable. But too small to carry my kids+wife around. In the first half of August i'll go to Bucharest, check some cars.
I am also puzzled by the Hyundai I30. Some people say it's junk, yet many reviews say otherwise. It also received 5 stars in crash tests, both in Europe and USA, car of the year in Australia, etc. I had in mind the 1.6 L petrol version, 126 bhp - but i read it burns the fuel like a race car (10.5 - 11.5 in city, 6.5 - 7 outside).
Mazda 3 also sounds good, but can't find a used one for sale.

You won't find many used Mazda 3's, they're Mazdas (good thing)
I'd love one, as they drive pretty brilliantly, but nearly impossible to find.
If you liked how the Polo handled, I'd suggest an Auris perhaps, or a 307/407. A Golf is similar, but compared to a Polo you really feel the added weight - not necessarily a bad thing, because it's got a slightly beefier engine (if you go for the same size/edition), but it does drive quite different. Do go for at least a 1.6 though, or one of the "higher class" 1.4's; VW's FSI engines are good ones (size doesn't mean everything, a Colt's 1.5L is a fucking monster).
I'm personally not a fan of the i30, it looks much flashier than it really is.

Forget 2007 for that money, unless you're fine with a small economic car. You should think about 2004-2005. Stay away from cheap BMW's, it'll cost more in teh long run. I'd go for a 307 or an Audi A4 (best choice). A4's are a bliss to drive, 307 does the job. If you're lucky you could find a Mercedes C200-220 2004 for 10.000 plus some change. Doubtful, but possible.

In my XM from 1990 I had a little button I could press to get "sport" suspension, ie. a lot stiffer. With the later XM's and then Xantias had Hydractive 2.0 suspension which would actually dynamically change suspension in corners so you were always level, cornering made even better. Citroen had the most advanced suspension system in the industry. Unfortunately it was expensive and complicated. They still have some kind of evolved hydraulic system in some models, but I haven't kept up to speed since I've got a Peugeot 405.

My first car is either going to be a fiat 500 (childhood memories )
or a mini
But that's next year.
Need to get a license and get over the fear of wanting to run people over.

Actually, in my country, for these money i can get with a bit of luck even a bigger car, like a Subaru Forester or a Dodge Caliber. The problem is their engines are too large, and the taxes will kill me. Also they burn the fuel like crazy (13+ in city). I had a Mercedes C200 in mind, but i heard the maintenance cost is quite high. I love Audi A4, but they're quite expensive and usually those from 2004 have 150k + mileage.
Found a few Mitsubishi Lancers, 1.6L petrol, 98 bhp, from 2008, 38000 km, that fit my money. Are they any good ?
Also, opinions on Chevy Aveo / Cruze ?

Pretty much this
i see tho that most people don't know what the fuck they are talking about since you can apparently buy an almost new car (2008 or newer) for 9500.
Golf V TDI, Jetta would be nice but i doubt you'd find one.
Passat is also a good option, but a TDI would probably be a wagon at this price.
307 is alright, but i'd still go for the Golf.
So, Laurentiu would buy a god damn new piece of shit Dacia Logan or Sandero than a Jetta or something, yep, pretty much the SHIT mindset over here.

Logan or Sandero are not an option. I have a friend who just bought a brand new Logan, and he was driving at 100 km/h, when the car suddenly stopped. The engine just died; he managed to restart it after 10 minutes. He went to the service, they said they couldn't find anything wrong with the car. So basically, he drives now concerned that the car might die suddenly at any moment.
