So i wanted to play some shumps on mame, couldnt find my harddrive
my mame install and rom collection was over 2 years old so i decided to wipe the whole thing and redownload the most recent set. I downloaded the following:
0.139 Full set
0.139 to 0.140
0.140 to 0.141
0.141 to 0.142
0.142 to 0.143 (including updated CHDs for CPS3 games)
Newest stable release of mame plus 0.143 from emucr site
first of all i dont know how to reliably merge those updates into the fullset, tried to google for tutorials but they are more confusing than i can bother to experiment now.
at the moment i simply added each folder seperatly to mame which used to do the job.
Biggest problem i have is games missing files when trying to start them, one specific example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espgaluda - the game i would like to play
espgal.zip - the name of the zipfile
The game got supported in 0.141, so the espgal.zip is found in the 0.140 to 0.141 update. I get an error when starting that it is missing 2 files, i open the zip file and indeed only 6 files in it , correct total should be 8. I google for the zipfile, some sites show the same content as mine, some show the correct with 8 in it, i download it, replace the original and it works fine now.
Question is now did i simply download incomplete sets? would merging be the solution? though i cant find any zip files with the same name in newer updates.
I cant afford to redownload the 1.4GB update over and over from other sources till i find a good one.
Even games like street fighter 3rd strike that has the newest CHD and updates in that new update i get along row of missing files....
My brain is fried by the sun so i would appreciate it someone could point me in the right direction, do i need to merge , wrong sets, wrong settings?
thanks

I can't help you, but a question... Are mame games still produced in arcades? Or is it all historic stuff now?

Depends. MAME attempts to emulate pretty much all known arcades (with varying degrees of success, since the developers are so fucking anal about doing everything IN SOFTWARE MODE ONLY) The majority of MAME games are old 80s/90s titles but there are a few in the 2000s. Though I doubt any of them (outside of CPS3) work well enough to be considered playable.

I've not bothered with MAME in a good long time. I hate the emulator and I hate the people behind it. Each new version of the emulator is significantly worse than the prior one, because the idiots keep throwing more drivers in and having to write hacky code to get them working - rather than concentrating on fixing the shit that's already there. My biggest pet peeve with MAME is this preposterous notion of making the emulator run solely via software, which is piss-poor at the best of times.
Sorry mate, I wish I could help :\ As for your one game and its missing files; Most likely it wasn't a true 0.141/0.142 set. If you managed to get the next version of the game that had all 8 ROMs inside it, and that worked on MAME 0.142, then it proves the set you downloaded was incomplete or using outdated files.
