I will try Vindictus, although I hear it's a grind.
Anyway, word of advice, if you want to have fun in AoC, then play a melee class, it at least requires you to pay attention, while playing. The combos are nothing special though, you just have to press 2/3 buttons instead of one, other than that, it's still the same WoW mold game of spam away at the enemy's HP, instead of it being reactive combat.

It seems like they dramatically shortened the combos since launch, which is a shame. I logged back on to my Assassin which I got up to 70 first week or so of launch, and some 4 step combos are now only 2 or 3.
And there is reactive combat IMO, you can toggle directional shielding, and you need to use combos in a different order depending on where the enemy has his shields at any given moment if you want to maximize your DPS. Positioning also plays a major role in melee if you want your attacks to hit multiple enemies at once.
Funcom botched the initial launch and post launch support big time, but goddamnit this game deserves way more attention and success than it has ever gotten.
-It stands in its own league graphically. No other MMO can even come close. Not by a long shot. They had the balls to push the tech and make something visually appealing, while all other MMO's went the WoW mainstream crap laptop graphics route.
-Gameplay wise it is one of only two MMO's I know of (the other being DC Universe Online) that uses active combat. The melee combos are fun and engaging (even if they've shortened them now ). I could never go back to the push one key to trigger skill MMO's after playing AoC.
-I like the lore, having never read any of the books. The swords and sandals approach is refreshing compared to 90% of the generic orcs and goblins crap that is put out.
-The music is abso-fucking-lutely STUNNING. Best background music in an MMO period. Even if you don't play the game, download the soundtrack.
-Mature oriented content. Blood, decapitations, whores, and tits. Again, they had the balls to go against the grain, much respect for that.
In short, after having gotten back into it (the last time I played was at launch), I REALLY want this MMO to succeed. They've produced an A+ title and it deserves it.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Well, IMHO, there is minor tactics involved, when in PvE about the shield positioning, in PvP, it plays no role at all, because PvP is a circle fest, and you as an Assassin probably know that better, than anyone. Heck, I was really good in PvP with my DT even, which then was by far the weakest class, and all I had to to, is learn to circle strafe properly.
I wouldn't say it has an active combat system, you just have to push 2/3 buttons, instead of one. That's not really that active. Aside from that, the mechanics behind the game work just the same as they have since EQ. You don't really need tactics to be good.
The only game I know of, that has tactical combat, and is an MMO is DDO. There it really matters, what type of attack you use against what, and when. It really matters, that you change your weapons based on what you are fighting, in order to bypass the DR, and it matters, what buffs you do, in order to conserve SP. DDO is by far the best PvE experience in an MMO by a longshot, and nothing even comes 25% of the way close to it.
Back to Conan though: I think graphically, it is the best, true, followed closely by Lotro, though - that game can look very nice in some places, but characters don't look even close to AoC.
Music is also great, just like the setting - I myself love it too.
But my problem is, game is still just a generic 1234 1234 MMO, when it comes to what you spend your time doing the most: combat.

Even more than "quite nicely", it's F2P model is really great.
- in-game points that can be used to purchase content and features
- pay for as much as you want to play (quest packs)
- almost everything you do in that game is rewarding, even killing a random damn boar (you get ranked titles that can translate further into in-game points, used, again, to get more content / you get crap loot from that boar that is also used in other quests)
- crap-limited F2P features like inventory space or gold limit is easily fixed with the first in-game points you collect in the game
So yea, IMO system is well build. Other F2P MMOs have some things to learn from LoTRO's model.

If you download all the areas (including expansion) it's around ~15 GB (unpacked 21.8 GB). But, as previously stated, the initial download is much smaller. It also has background download capability that can be throttled while you play.

Installed it again to see how the game plays in the free version and... Did they remove a LOT of graphical settings?
They've removed their old AA and it's now limited to FXAA (which actually looks worse than no AA. Even more so with FXAA HQ)
They've reduced some settings, like shadows which is now either High or Disabled.
And overall the game doesn't look as good as it used to.
Anyone knows something about this? Any way to make the game look like it once did? Seems strange that they'd make it look worse than it used to.

Last I checked (when the chink expansion came out) the engine produced gfx errors all over the place with some shader settings. Maybe instead of fixing it they just removed some of the advanced options. Wouldn't surprise me tbh.

It's pretty good for the first few lvls on Tortage. Goes downhill from there though.

It wasn't that bad for me before, but it seems like the new engine they're using seriously reduced the visual quality of the game. What used to impress me in the game now looks BAD. Bad shadows, poor lighting, and the lack of a real AA is seriously STRANGE. It also feel like some other things are missing, because the game just looks really flat.
And I think it's kinda shit how people who bought the real game don't seem to really get much over people who create a new Free account. I've got 3 character slots and am limited to 4 classes when creating new characters. While it's nice that they AT LEAST let me keep one character who's using a class that isn't available to free accounts (Bear Shaman) it's really shit how they don't really care about old players who aren't "premium" accounts.
The game just isn't nearly as attractive as it should be, and I was actually excited about it since I had some good memories and some of the new content seemed interesting. Now I'm just not interested anymore.
