Ok so I got my friend into Terraria recently and has been playing on a dedicated server on his friends system. His internet isn't all that great and is on wireless laptop as well so they lag pretty bad.

Friend wants to run server since he has better internet so I show him how to use hamachi and all that to make it easier and no one can connect to him.

His current setup is Wireless laptop to Netgear WGR614 V10 router to Motorola SB 5101 modem.

So what I did was hook laptop up to modem directly got the IP address. Turned off windows firewall and microsoft security essentials. I still can't get a ping through to his computer. I called comcast and they were able to ping the modem just fine, did 100 packets at 256bytes and all was fine, but when pinging the computer it was a no go and they obviously had no idea what to do from there.

Another issue that I thought was weird is that both the laptop and desktop while hooked up to the router both have the same IP address..dunno what that's about but that's another issue.

Any ideas whats blocking the incoming connections? I was quick to think it was the router but after taking it out of the equation and it still not working threw me off.

Doesn't seem to be any settings in the modem that we can log into and directly change either.

did you just turn windows firewall off, or did you disable the service?
Ive had issues with windows 7/2008 where firewall off didnt matter..I had to set the windows firewall service itself to "disabled" to get it to actually stop doing things.

if hes on comcast, and directly hooked to the modem, there shouldn't be anything he needs to change on it, it has no firewall/router/settings for it. its just a docsis connection device.

and if hes hooked to the modem and you can ping it, your are pinging his machine..you cant ping the modem itself. (if its a comcast one). unless you mean comcast was able to ping the modem as in "they are testing to see if they can talk to it" but a direct packet ping/pong isnt possible to it.

(edit: ignore what was here thought you said you had them both hooked to the modem directly..not router)
for the dual IP shared thing..in that case is DHCP on in the router, to assign IP addresses?

Well I tried disabling the service and that was a no go as well. I've had this issue before and was just stupid and when I reinstalled windows it worked. He's thinking about trying that cause I can't think of anything else.

hmm
hard to troubleshoot without being there to see it.

if you direct connect the laptop to the modem to get an external IP. you cannot ping his ISP's given IP from another machine?
does his hamachi show as connected to your hamachi, and can you ping its 5.x.x.x ip when hes 'green' on it?

even with him straight on modem we still couldn't ping it. Hamachi is green and still can't ping.

He JUST installed bare ass windows 7, nothing installed and still can't get a ping out of it.

try having him share folders to "everyone" (both permissions and security tabs) on his laptop..something random.
see if you can rightclick and goto it in hamachi under 'browse".

and if im covering anything you already know, just ignore it
I rather cover everything, and you know it, than skip something that might point to a fix by assuming you tried it.

but id venture to say if its not letting you ping hamachi but he shows up green, its something in the windows itself, or his router (if its hooked to that).
as it sees it as a local lan and there, just denied by the machine itself.

you could try changing the binding order of the network connections see if that helps.

I just thought of something I dunno if it's relevant or not. I disabled some option I thought was going to work and i pinged it from his smart phone which worked. Then I couldn't get it to work on anyone system pinging then I thought oh wait...this phone is connected to your router so of course it works..it's on your network already.

I didn't think of it till later....it pinged on the network, the laptop accepted the inbound traffic. It has to be either that fucking modem or the ISP being retarded. It is comcast after all.

What ya think warlock?

it might be, but I don't think they stop pings, and the cable modem the same one I have, and I have comcast know it doesn't filter it (well where I live anyway). you try doing a web ping?

http://www.pingtest.net/

but even not hook the the modem/router at all, it should ping 127.0.0.1
you know how to find ipconfig?
cmd prompt > type ipconfig (in case you dont) see what his IP is. and if it lists a ipv6 IP.

also try pinging ::1 its another version of 127.0.0.1

or if he trusts me, let me hop on the hamachi group Ill see if I can see anything.
if nothing else I can host the terraria for ya, I had one up on my server behind me until we got bored..so its sitting there not doing anything.

EXACTLY!!!

Netgear is fucking retarded and labeled it stupidly. That exact option on a Linksys like mine would have been labeled "Block Anonymous Internet Requests* but even then it would still allow for the use of servers.

Netgear is just garbage and cheap..no wonder people don't buy their junk. Only thing decent they make is access points.

Aight, you're not idiots and know how to get to it already but under the tcp/ipv4 properties select the option "Use the following DNC server addresses"

Preferred: 208.67.222.222
Alternate: 208.67.220.220
