OK, so I never really got in to any top-down action RPGs, because they never seemed tactical to me, but I'd like to give it another chance, and I'd like you to give me a few recommendations, please.

Here's what I'm looking for:
- Not the following, I have played them: D1 and 2, TQ, Witcher (by far the best), DS 1 & 2 & Space siege (never liked these)
- not braindead combat, action RPG can be great, look at witcher, I'm looking for different tactics vs. different enemies - I loathe spell or skill rotations, I like it if enemies require different tactics. The more complex, the better!
- complex customization (not graphical!), I want multiple skills or talents, multiple ways of building a class
- recent game, with sort of goodish graphics
- story doesn't matter that much, but a good one never hurts.

Thank you in advance!

I dunno if this meets your criteria.

But what about Icewind Dale 1, 2? They are infinity engine games sure, but they are very actioney.

They have plenty of character development, good stories and challenging fights. They aren't button mashers though.

Thanks, but I finished them, loved them. They were good games, love DnD.

Personally I would cut that down to the Underdark expansion for NWN 1 and Mask of the Betrayer + Mysteries of Westgate for NWN2.

I finished all the DnD games, I think, of the past 15 years Very Happy Didn't list them, because I don't consider them action RPGs, they are tactical RPGs. Very Happy

I don't know mate, I would say Din's Curse. Path of Exile goes into beta in august. Grim Dawn is just shaping up and it looks good until now. I'm still waiting for that damn Inquisitor game, damn it... The first Sacred was an amazing game, though I never managed to finish it. The second one is also nice in my opinion, but it has such a slow start and it gets boring a lot faster. I don't know about more complex ones, I'm sure you know pretty much all of them.

Impossible demands are impossible? The Witcher is one of a kind, in that it's a pure aRPG but actually requires strategy also. Generally the very nature of aRPGs is that they don't require strategy, just uber gear. Still; Divine Divinity. Old but oh, OH so good. Divinity 2 should also be on everyone's playlist, though it's not really top-down but OTS instead.

Hmm. OK, you said you like your action dungeon crawls, out of the ones I mentioned, what would be your absolute top 3? Disregard complex combat then.

I don't know why I said this even after you gave recommendations, it seems I didn't read your last sentence, sorry.

Divine Divinity is a really good suggestion from Sabin. I wholeheartedly endorse that. Great action RPG with challenge and good story.

Divinity games for sure! The Dragon Knight Saga (the full edition of Divinity 2) is such an underrated gem, seriously, like all of Larian's games for that matter. If you didn't play it, it's a must. I'm sure I spent around 200 hours in all of the versions of that game together.

I'm willing to expand my definition of RPG to include the godlike Crusader series

@Radicalus

On the PC, or in general? Razz Generally my favourite aRPGs are console-bound - since no self-respecting PC Elitist would touch them with a bargepole Very Happy Anyhow, PC;

Divine Divinity/Sacred (plz dun maek me chews!)
Titan Quest/Loki (again, plz dun maek me chews!)
Silverfall (loot-whores-R-us)

More recent;

Divinity 2
Sacred 2 (dull at the start, but gets better)
Depths of Peril/Din's Curse + ExP
Torchlight/FATE
Hellgate London
Arx Fatalis

All in all, for a game you absolutely should play that encompasses everything you wish - including story - but may be a tad old, visually, for you; Sacred and Divine Divinity. You should love both of those.

@DarkRohirrim

Larian friggin' RULE. I've bought all their games (huge meh on Beyond Divinity though) and I'll continue to do so.

DKS sucks. Divinity 1 was cool, but combat was pretty lame and shallow so it doesn't really fit OP's demands. But then, nothing does. Maybe King's Bounty.

How about TOME 4? It's a pretty decent looking roguelike, doesn't completely fit the "action RPG" demand but it might be worth checking out.

Yeah, it sucks a lot! I mean, how the fuck can you like that game, it's freaking stupid, ugly shit!

@Sabin Did you like Silverfall? I remember that I tried it a lot of time ago, but it didn't seem really ok at the start to me and I didn't continue, but I should try it again some time probably.

Yeah, I love Silverfall. The game is absolutely gigantic too, while looking damned pretty, almost as big as Sacred/DD.

... not to mention the megahuge expansion pack/sequel it received too.

Awesome games. There's a big graphical and perspective difference between the two, but both are great.

@Radicalus

Actually, the game itself is a lot smaller... there's an extra 9GB of "High Resolution Textures" on a separate DVD9, causes a significant performance hit though and there really isn't that much noticeable difference when in motion.

Only it wasn't a RPG at all. It was on the other hand the perfect example of what a medieval/fantasy action game should be.

No, the expansion doesn't include the original, it's a standalone but can import characters from the original... and yeah, the huge filesize (which was MAMMOTH! back when it first came out) isn't wasted space; both Silverfall and Earth Awakening are two of the biggest aRPGs I've ever seen. Massive amounts of content.

The thing I liked about Silverfall was you could influence the changes in the world depending on how you played; side with "nature" purists and technology starts to disappear, side with "technology" proponents and cities grow and become more industrial.

=Sales Pitch alert!=

You can get both Silverfall and Earth Awakening for $14.99/€14.99/£11.99 on Steam <3
