I would run out and call the fire brigade. They tell you to do that for a reason. They're the professionals. They know what they're doing. They don't want you to put yourself in danger because that puts them in danger. If you ignore their advice then you're asking for trouble. What would you do if you found a bomb in the next apartment, disarm it yourself? No you wouldn't. This is no different.
