So, looks like game won't be released at Feb 9th as Epsilon mentioned a few posts back, but is scheduled for Sep 2nd
Looks like castewar likes playing with the fanbase then, as he was the one who mentioned that we should hold our breath as something big were coming up and that paradox pr department were just 'kicking into gear' for february.
I love these games. What I really want is a tactical Star Trek "simulator" which doesn't stink. I just loaded up Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity a couple of days ago. That will do until SotS2 releases.
They seem to have moved the SOTS2 release date back a little.
Until recently it has been set for a release on the 20th September. Right now it has no fixed release date other than some rumors about an early October one.
Seems they're doing a number of these customization DLC, Gamersgate has their pack for two races and Steam has their for another two races, unsure what the DLC actually does but it seems it's some customized ship parts from how I read it.
(Interesting way to ensure pre-orders and also helps with a bit of funding should they be released separately in the future though I imagine future DLC will be a bit bigger and maybe they'll do expansion packs instead as for the earlier game. )
It's still more of a tactical "Homeworld" kinda game, right?
I'm much more interested in a grand strategy game ala MOO2, and if they're still doing the "slider" stuff for planets, I'll pass. Not exactly my kind of strategy.

In a world, where the space strategy games are on the way to extinction in favor of mindless shooters and silly life simulators one should really appreciate every last attempt (even if it is a failed attempt) to restore balance to the universe.
God knows I do hate the developers of this one, but that will not stop me from buying the game, just as i buy every other 4x space strategy game out there. Why?
Frist, because they are rare and even a half assed attempt of making a great space strategy game will be 50% better than having no space strategy game to play at all. Not to mention, that in every game there is the chance of greatness. Like star ruler for example, which could be a great game with some more care and development. (they are still developing that one, so there is still hope for them )
Also I buy them to show my support for the genre. Vote with your wallet, remember? If you want good strategy games, you have to show them that you are indeed willing to pay for strategy games. Sadly people expect it to work the other way around.. but noone will make niche games when there is no appearent demand for them and hate it as much as we want, grand strategy games are but a small niche now.
So if it is really just the sliders preventing your from buying the game, then i urge your to reconsider. The original MOO had sliders and many - including me - believe that it was a better game for it. Also who knows, you might find that you like the game the way it is, and even if does not manage to fill that gap in your heart that you reserve for the next MOO2, you will surely get as much / or more time out of this one, as you would with any other dumbed down console ported excuse of a game released these days, while at the same time you would move the industry 40 EUR closer to releasing that new grand strategy game that you have been waiting for.
Oh and just to clarify: calling SOTS homeworld is a gross simplification. Yes, the combat in sots was very deep and tactical and admittedly had its roots in homeworld, but thats about it. The game was a pretty decent 4X grand strategy game with a heavy emphasis on combat.
Based on the sales brochure they improved on that and now the game is not that much about gunboat diplomacy anymore, but even if they blatantly lied, the previous game was pretty decent and it would be really hard to not meet that level at least
So I consider SOTS2 to be a low risk investment with positive long term effects on the industry and a good chance for further improvements in the short to medium time frame.
Yah, the whole world was and still is waiting for SOTS II, but steam - as usual - is again ahead of everyone as they are already selling SOTS III Better yet.. it is supposedly released the same date as SOTS II will be for the rest of the world.
Oh and btw: I preordered from steam even though i loved GG for the simple reason that I have had all my other SOTS from them - without any issues i might say, but they were offering the wimpy liir and pathetic morrigi as preorder DLC, while steam - better even in these minor things - are offering the great tarka and the almighty hivers.
For the queen!

Sadly, I don't believe in the whole vote with my wallet thing. Even if I did, the last thing I'd support is a strategy game done wrong - which SotS is to my mind.
But, naturally, if you liked the first one - and you enjoy a 4X game with a GIGANTIC emphasis on research and ship battles - then it would be prudent to support it.
The "sliders thing" is just a quick way of saying I don't like the whole approach to planet development and the strategic aspects overall.
