Actually in law (lawyers correct me if I am wrong) you were a party to it if you were there and did not do anything to try to stop it.

Ya, I guess the context of the party. You are right. I don't do parties like that.
If one of my clients witnessed a criminal act and didn't interfere he could easily plead not guilty by saying he was afraid for his own safety or his life (in law there's a difference).
