I'd say that LA noire has MUCH MUCH better facial tracking.

It's just that they have a "better" head model in this video.

After the impressive results achieved with L.A. Noire (that we'll never play Mad ) more and more developers will focalize their resources into realistic facial animations, and it's a good thing after all...as long as these "cinematic effects" remain secondary aspects that don't compromise

the gameplay (which is the most important thing, in a game).

Maybe I'm weird, but I check the eyes when I see such things. The eyes are still dead. Even if teh facial animations are perfect one day, a character staring at you with blank eyes will ruin it all. As I said, I'm probably weird.

Nah, that's just natural. And unless the mimicry of ALL the facial muscles working in perfect unison is completely lifelike, most people will get that same sense of uncanny valley. Still, things have progressed quite a bit, considering how young this area of animation still is - we'll see the day when animators can come up with 3D models indistinguishable from a real person's face.

Tech like LA Noire's is certainly nice, but surely it's very expensive and requires you get actors that have very expressive faces (good voice acting doesn't cut it anymore, you need great "face" acting as well).

I am not convinced that hand animation can't produce pretty good results, for considerably less money, if you have good animation tools and talented animators. HL2 had the best facial animation, 7 years ago, and it was done completely by hand AFAIK. What if the game was made today?

Couldn't you just create a huge database of tiny expressions, combine them when you design a game and put a skin on it? Maybe I'm thinking too simple. Only the initial setting up of that database should be pricey since you'll need actors and such.

The problem is that the "sticking them together" part is not as easy as it sounds. You can't just put the animations one after another, because the transition between them would be unnatural, you'd have to concatenate them manually, a very long and tedious work for a result that probably isn't as good as doing it with a single take of the entire dialog.
It's the same with body animation: today almost every game uses motion capture, since it's at a point where it's cheaper to just hire a guy to move around in front of a bluescreen than paying several gusy to manually create, concatenate and synchronize the animations together.

And the animation is ultimately bound to what you say too. Ofc, you could record all animations for syllables, but you can imagine that you'd have to write a lot of code so that it fit's the written text and so on. Nice thing with this technique is, that it's perfectly synced to the lips and the actors emotions. So you'd need to have all emotions, all syllables and so on ... VERY complicated. This solution is actually the "easier" and better way Smile

Quite funny that once we thought that digital actors might replace the real actors Very Happy For now it seems as if we'll just have digital counterparts ^_^

And I think that LA Noires facial tracking is even better than what we saw in Avatar...

I like Mister_s' idea, I think it will never be cheap, but someone will make it happen. It would have his own studio, like after effects, but it's only for facial animation, and you put certain animations in your timeline, sync them together, and in the background a software, lik Euforia (only a bit more complex) would calculate derived muscle movements of the inputted animations, adding a certain level of randomness in for good measure.

I can see that happening easily, it would sell too, indies would buy something like that up, if it were available for a couple thousand euros, it would cut the workload of animators by a bunch!
