|
 |
Got a question for all you who know about gathering info on the browsing habits of users. Specifically facebook but really any web pages that target ads to you.
Something I have noticed is that the ads on the right hand side (usually in 3's) are things that I have googled before. Like specific school programs, nail art, and quite a few other things as well. I have deleted them and more appear that are again quite specific. It can't be coincidence, and I have NEVER searched facebook for such things so I don't know how they are targeting me with their marketing. I don't think they have some sort of clever spyware outside facebook?
Sooo... how does this work?

Never saw any ads that were targeted to me in any way. Mostly generic stuff.
It's possible they use your name and/or sex, and whatever you liked on FB, but it's unlikely that they use spyware. Might be a coincidence.

8 Times coincidence? Only one of those times did I look at a group-topic specific that appeared as an add. Ya, spyware seems unlikely.

Well for one if you make searches with google a cookie is stored on your computer to identify you. So when you go on facebook and the ad loads that cookie (for example an imbedded ad could do that without problems I suppose), sends your ID back to google and they show you ads according to your previous searches. As far as I know it has nothing to do with facebook except for them placing ads by google. Any other page that embeds the same type of ad would show similar ads.
In google is the option to turn off your search history (forgt the name right now), maybe this'll help? Further go to the privacy options of your google account and see if you can choose generic ads over personalized ads.

Ohhh Imbedded ads by google on facebook latching onto my goggle /ID/ cookies. I just got peanut butter all over my keyboard. I have no experience to know if this is correct but it seems a likely story.

Didn't know FB used google for ads...Does it?
But google does collect your data, scans your emails and shit, to target the ads better.

It would use google embedded ads if that was the best way to make money. How or what other ways would facebook do 'ad space' other then google Like through a"'pay per click" company? Would those embedded ads work the same way.
By my questions you can tell I am pretty much in the dark here on how all this works but I find it all very interesting. By all intent and purpose compared to other users on this forum I know nothing tho.
So I really APPRECIATE your input BearishSun, and Pumpy. ( I miss my ducky)

Facebook does sell advertising space (which you can see on the right-hand side, the ones with small pictures and some text) but those have nothing to do with google nor do they get any data from your browsing habits, either. They're targeted by the info available to facebook (your location, age, gender, interests etc.) only.

That is what I think too. Today it was for coupons for nail art. 4 days ago I did go on to a coupon site. All Facebook knows of me is my age, sex, location. I haven't checked off much in my interests. I never added my school, area of study.
It is kinda creepy. My gut is telling me there is something more invasive going on here.
This is something too. A friend has recently been flooded with friends requests from guys from the middle east. I know after the protests f/b traffic went nuts after in those areas. Somehow I think f/b is funneling her profile out to those areas to increase traffic more, getting members interactions up.
All of this isn't some big deal to me personally, but it makes me wonder how far ...f/b is going with this.

There are guides on the Internet to disable it.
There are certain ads as well that are directed towards your location, that can easily be disabled, type about:settings in the adress bar(firefox) and look for geolocation, something, the server is something with google in the address. Replace that with the local host(127.0.0.1).
Can't really help you disable the cookie enabled ads, I can't remember how. But there is a way.

That's the thing with FB apps that require ALL your data and personal information to do some farming or horse breeding.

Wanted to link my Yahoo account with Failbook so I could have all my FB contacts in my Y!M(shut up, it's still a thing in RO) list. The prompt was asking me to allow access to EVERYTHING on my FB profile, I actually had to scroll down so I could see everything it wanted to access.
Fuck dat shit, amirite.
