There's an unofficial patch for Risen on world of risen forums.

Fixes a lot of bugs, some of those more annoyinhg ones ( like xp bug- you have 980/1000xp for next level, kill something worth 300xp, get only 20 ) and needs official patch 1.1.

Nice find!

I used mainly this with the unofficial patch for some of the vegetation textures, primarily low-detail ("low-poly" as he calls them here.) LOD versions.

Via.
http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=799896
(Modstarter/manager, allows updating of lists and auto-downloading of a number of modifications, I used the above, unofficial update and one other texture pack for normal vegetation I can't remember the name of also via the mod program.)

I've reached the Harbour town and I have some questions.

1) Why do I see 3 attacking spells in the character page ? That's all there is ?
2) Who should I join for an initial playthrough ?

I'm generally not sure what to aim for in my character development. Axe, fireball ?

Just for starters.

There are three classes in the game

1. Bandit: Sword/Axe - Scrolls
2. Inquisition Guards: Staffs, Srolls - Offensive Spells
3. Mage: Staffs, Runemagic (same as scrolls but you can use them all the time) & Offensive Spells

I'd recommend going to the bandits first before doing the harbour quests and choosing a side. It's going to be a bit more difficult in the beginning but you will have the maximum of quests (and Skillpoints) available to you.

Yes, there are only three offensive spells available, allthough they become better (faster, greater, more effective), but you will learn other spells (like levitation, or transform into a nautilus) if you become a mage.

If you become an inquisition guy, you will be able to use those offensive spells alongside bigger staffs. The other spells will only be available through scrolls.

If you become a bandit, you wont be able to learn the offensive spells, but you will be able to use and create scrolls. Also this class will be able to train in swords and axes to their highest level, which isnt available to the other two.

I suggest playing the bandit first. But you can choose to do otherwise.

If you want to play mage, make the bandit camp quests first, and then the harbour, as with every class, but try not to expend to many skillpoints in swords/axes, before you actually learn the offensive spells. Also it is recommended to only invest in one of the three offensive spells. All three have their benefits but Ice is best suited for Inquisition guys, because you can freeze the enemies before spamming strikes.

I'm already in the harbour town. Seems I can't get out for now. Maybe I should just join the Inquisition and be a badass battlemage as soon as possible.

There is a way to get out of town, but I dont remember how. (Google) But you must always try to avoid the guards outside or you will become part of the inquisition, even if you dont want to. Wink

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

You have to decide whom to support, either aid the inquisitors or the bandits, neither are good or bad as such, in the town there will be four quest chains for each side or rather the same four quests but you can resolve them either in order favor or rebel/bandit favor. Smile
(Inquisitors have access to basic magic if forcefully recruited and full magic abilities if recommended, bandits have the better arms and weapon training but both are near identical in type of armor this time aside from appearance, most anything can be done during act 1 or act 2 but some additional quests unlock as the story progresses, depending on playstyle and lack of equipment not all of the island might be explorable properly early on however.)

I find some duels impossible, because I've only improved Strength 5 points and no weapon. If I wanna be a mage, then I should wait till I can put points on Staff, right ? I won't be using swords/axes, right ?

It will probably be useful to put in a few points in a weapon skill before getting a staff.

In Gothic you only had the option to become a mage after the first chapter, so you had to invest in weapon/strength even if you wanted to be a pure mage later on. Same applies here.

Ok, I escaped from the city but where the fuck is the bandit camp, I found the monastery, the volcano keep and some routes filled with monsters I can't handle.

I'm at that farm right now.

Why. Doesn't. The. Map. Have. Names.

Swamp, you get a tour (Recommended for the XP that quest brings.) right at the second NPC you meet, at the house near the crossroad into the farm and forest region.

EDIT: Well one of the swamps at least, anyway it was answered. Smile

Even some nearby located easier quests were tough in that though, like the dropped ring in the water (That small object, plus the bug with them being all black fixed later via fan-update.) took a lot of time to find, plus the eventual Kwama mine, odd random NPC (Incidentally three naked Nerds ehh Nords and a Khajiit selling pants nearby, convenient, plus the whole witch thing.)

Then there's smaller areas like Tribunal having the blood dart gang or what it was doing 1000 poison damage or some such (Over a period of long time, in total.) to challenge high level players. Razz

Gothic 1 had similar problems as well before you had scouted the area better though I had few issues navigating around in Gothic 2 from what I remember.

EDIT: And those mushroom Telvanni towers were hell to navigate as a warrior build.

I did the tour but then got inside the city at once. Following the road, where the fuck is it, after the city rear entrance ?

I don't need a quest marker, I need an actual map with actual names.

EDIT: Ok, I had to backtrack from the fucking farm and spoke to Jan, who walked with me there.

Right, sorry for the vague description, I tend to accept them in order going back and doing the other to add some XP. Smile
(I tend to explore nearby for items as well, also often ends with getting violated by order thugs, wolves, boars, vultures, gnomes - maybe you met those already - and a number of other weird stuff.)

Heh, it was night when I was at that Jan's house and I didn't exhaust all the dialogue options, I continued to the farm, which felt like the end of the "tutorial part" of the game. So I took for granted that the rest of the game was afterwards.

P.S.: Maps should have names.

Toughest one for me was finding that azura shrine (or whatever it was) that only opened at dawn (or was it dusk). Had to look online for that one.

But I was replaying it recently and was surprised how obscure even starting quests were. They tell you a general direction, and few landmarks, but don't mention you need to walk a freaking mile before reaching them. It's all part of its charm ofc.

All the hand guiding in recent games made me forgetful of how it used to be.

I couldn't get into Morrowind cause of the vague descriptions at the start. I remember walking and walking and then a huge bird killed me. I also remember some bullshit piece-by-piece armor system and random potion making.

lol. no thanks. Not after playing the KOTOR games and Jade Empire.

But Oblivion + mods (especially to get rid of the autolevelling crap) = awesomeness
