Where do you intend to get your books? If you want to download them you'd probably be better off with a sony prs-505. If you want to buy them the kindle 2 is likely the best choice.

I want to buy them from the comfort of my dorm room. Should I wait for the kindle 2? The new features don't look that uber.

i can see the appeal of a dedicated reading device, but $360? seriously?
i don't see the point of anyone paying more than $50 for one
might aswell get an actual computer while at it (pre900-series eee is probably around $100 by now, if you can still find one)
or a phone with a large screen

Does it still only let you see the amazon drm ebooks/papers or is it meanwhile free for the own ebooks without any protection?

It is practically an iphone for ebooks or maybe even worse because it only displays amazon's proprietary format and a couple of others which don't include pdf, doc, jpg, or any of the other newer ebook formats.

If you can wait two weeks I would get the Kindle 2, just because of the faster page refresh.
You can put your own documents on a kindle, pdf etc has to be converted first, Amazon can do this for free (or you can pay for it if you want to).

lol time to resurrect an old thread.
I just got a Kindle 3 and I'm loving it so far. I wish there were more hacks for it but I guess you can only do so much with such dedicated hardware.

one of my friends has 3G version and the other has DX and they look really great.
I'd love to get one, but the customs shit is unbelievable. I know a friend from uni, who ordered it like 2 months ago and it's been sitting in the customs for like a month...

Aren't there some low budget e-ink Android tablets nowadays? I remember seeing something about it during CeBiT, but I didn't really pay much attention because I'm not really into ebooks

I don't think so but I don't follow tablets. I know that Ipad/Ipad2 does not have it.
Other device that I can think of is Nook Color. It has android 3.0 and e-ink.

Bringing this back to life:
I was thinking about getting a Kindle in the US, the one for $79.
I don't know much about it, so here are some questions:
That $79 deal is apparently tied to some advertising shit. How does it work if I take the Kindle back to Germany, and when Wifi is off?
Does the Kindle only support Amazon E-Books, or can you also read "pirated" E-books on it? And how comfortable (or unconfortable) is it to read PDF books?

kindle with offers, its jusr screensavers with some offers. they change everymonth or so. you can receive 10$ coupon towards your next purchase. or something similar
you can pretty much read any pirated pdf book that you can get hands in. from school textbooks to regular books.
i think major differencr between if you buy book from amazon or pirate is how the book is devided into section for easy reading. amazon ebook will have larger fonts for easy reading. and pirated book will come with snaller font but still totaly readable.
Amazon offers service that will convert ANY pdf to kindle-friendly format for easy reading.

What the hell are you talking about? You can download whatever format(I prefer mobi and epub) ebook you want illegally from places, convert if needed through Calibre and upload to your Kindle and it's the same thing as buying from amazon. Quite a lot of ebooks nowadays are also formatted with chapter breaks to make easier reading.

Great, so Epub is supported, because from my sources most books are in that format. I'm basically only interested in getting pirated books, I don't see the point of paying nearly the same for an ebook that you can't even sell afterwards...

It's not supported exactly, if you'd up the epub directly to the device, I'm not sure if it would even read it. You have to run it through Calibre's converter, which takes a few seconds. The down side is that Calibre's UI is a horrible horrible thing that should burn in a special hell that's reserved to child molesters and people who talk at the movies.

I was worried I won't be able to find ebooks in mobi format for Kindle, but turns out people rip books to .mobi just for Kindle
Amazing device but has some issues: like every now and then while reading a book it just stops responding. One time I press "next" to change page and it's okay, after 30 seconds I press it again and nothing, it froze. Have to do a restart everytime it happens |
I, too, used to have this problem with my Kindle (2nd ver.), after I updated the firmware (even though it was up to date), it solved the freezing issue. Perhaps, you have the same issue? Or you can just smash it with a brick. Bricks are fun.
