|
 |
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-04-26-james-cameron-games-will-drive-3d
Basically, his idea is, that 3d technology (which he btw invested in heavily) will be driven by the gaming market. I'd like to ask you, what you think about that? Have you tried games in 3d? Is it any good?
I haven't played a single game in 3d, I'm the first to admit, but I have seen 3d movies, and somehow, each movie I watched in 3d had (to balance the dimensions probably) the most shallow one dimensional characters possible. Avatar being the worst offender. Jokes aside, for me, 3d has added absolutely nothing - NOTHING to the experience of a movie.
Will it add to gaming? I imagine something like driving games could be cool, but I don't see myself playing a shooter with 3d - it would only make aiming take longer. Having everything in one plane is easier, than having to focus back and forth all the time.
I don't know, but short of working holograms, that you can look at from every direction, I just don't see the appeal of making a fixed perspective in fake 3d. What do you guys think?
Oh, and the gem of the article, is Cameron looking in to making an Avatar MMO - man, if I didn't know for a fact, that only emos, queers and apple users would play it, I'd actually subscribe just for the unlimited trolling potential as an "evil corporate leader".

Haven't tried 3d yet but as long as it requires a significant investment + using the derp glasses, I'm not interested.
Even if I had the €, I'd rather to try Eyefinity or NVSurround.

Games will hardly dictate it as long as NVIDIA stick to their proprietary crap, and as long as it's not done properly. There's literally just 2 or 3 games that really do it well, in the rest it's either annoying or adds absolutely nothing.

Yeah, but is it any good - I've read many people swearing by it, but I just can't imagine it adding so much to a game - though who the hell knows?

The 3d technology would be mostly used to increase the "cinematic feel" of games, making them more like cool interactive movies, which is quite unnecessary and..well, derp. Gameplay>everything else

Like I said, when done properly, yes it does add something. It brings a new level of immersion. The downside is that when it doesn't work, it REALLY doesn't work.
Again though, the only game where it really works for me is JC2; it works in racing games as well, just like Surround/Eyefinity work incredibly well for racing games. That's the place where I see a big future for display spanning and 3D, sims or anything else that mimics real life somewhat. The added peripheral vision from the spanning combined with the improved depth perception is priceless in a flight sim or racing sim/game
I'd love to give a 3x2 + 3D setup a go in Shift 2/rFactor/LFS

I still think 3D is a gimmick that will work for a few specially tailored productions, but generally it's not going to improve things.

What? No thanks, don't need that. I would rather go on the hills and through the forests nearby my city, for example. Never understood why this 3D crap even exists.

3D would cripple gameplay even more imo, more cutscenes ala modern COD, less quality gameplay, no fuckin' thanks.
My theory is that it's bad for your eyes as well, gives me a fuckin' headache.

Actually, I think T1, T2 are generic crap stolen from other people (Twilight Zone episodes mostly - and a robot added in for good measure), True Lies is basically meh, and Titanic is a chick flick.
The best thing he ever did was co-write Strange Days, and nobody saw that sadly.
Oh yeah, and Avatard ... the most overrated shit ever to grace the big screen.
So I'm with xDBS on this one.

Completely agree. Well, Avatar was a tad cheesy but I enjoyed it a great deal. But marking The Aliens and Terminator as trashy flicks is preposterous.

Well like I said, in some games it certainly does have a place. Not sure I'd see it work in Skyrim like Yondaime suggests, but display spanning works unexpectedly well for a racing game (or anything that simulates a vehicle). Not only because of the better FoV you obviously get, but because that FoV matches your *actual* FoV. I never bother using my right fucking analog stick to turn my view left or right to use my side mirrors, but when I've got Eyefinity turned on, all of a sudden I find myself checking them and noticing stuff happening there in the corner of my eye, just like I do in a real car.
I can see the same happening for 3D; still, for something like Skyrim I don't see how it could add much. For a racing game however, again I can see how it could be useful because you'll be able perceive depth more accurately.
I'll agree that it's still more of a gimmick than anything else, and for 90% of all games it'll do jackshit, but there are places where they do work and fit (both display spanning and 3D).

This is the second time I'm called "hater for hating's sake" by you, and it's no longer funny
Yes, I think most of Cameron's work is subpar. I like movies of a different taste. I have pretty good reason to hate on them, if you pop on to IMDb you can read my pretty lengthy reviews of most of those movies, and why I dislike them.

Terminator: not shitty, loved it
Terminator 2: not shitty, loved it
Aliens: not shitty, loved it
True Lies: not quite shitty, at least it passed the time as light entertainment
Rambo: uhm, what the hell does Cameron have to do with Rambo??!?!!?, loved it at the time, now it's a bit awkward but still a classic
The Abyss: not shitty, loved it
Titanic: drenched in nonsense, hated it
Avatar: shittiest shitty shit, full of shit. Gimmick movie. Couldn't even finish the damn thing, it was as people said, pocahontas in space, generic and derivative and hyped to hell and back.

Can someone, for the love of god, invent something to improve story in games. Enough with the goddam visuals, try to better the actual games for a change.

Terminator -> Good
Terminator 2 -> Probably the pinnacle of his career, it goes down hill from here.
Aliens -> On repeat viewing, especially after watching in context to the first, this is really a meh -67/10 with the childish cliche MachoToughGuy marine bla bla bla. He turned a mature masterpiece into an immature pew pew pew. Might have LOVED it as a child, but I grew up.
True Lies -> Not bad, relies heavily on Arnold for its charm. If it wasn't for Arnold and Arnold, it probably wouldn't have succeeded.
Rambo -> He only wrote a first draft of Rambo 2, and Stallone later took control, so success/failure or good/bad are unrelated to Cameron.
The Abyss -> It was good.
Titanic ->
Avatar ->
Sabin, as you like reminding every time someone criticizes your likes and dislikes, this are people's OPINIONS, and they are entitled to them, without being called "haters for hating".

3d gaming has a big potential, some years ago i've tried E-dimensional glasses, and despite the annoyng problems with drivers, monitor that has to be over 100hz and software not programmed specifically for 3dglasses, some games worked and the feeling was astonishing.
I remember F1 gp 4, a pinball in 3d (cant remember the name), No one lives forever 2 (great), all superb in 3d, the feeling to be "there" gives to all the experience a big boost, also in terms of gameplay.
You "feel" exactly everything, i remember the shurikens they throw at me in Nolf 2, how it was more easy and with more satisfaction to avoid them , or the perfect feel of speed in F1gp4.
The big problem is that games adapt not everytime very vell, they need to be programmed for 3d gaming
