|

Good Day,
I finally decided to replace my 15 years old 15" CRT monitor (yes,it is really a shame for a hardcore gamer like me).So I began searching for my new monitor with a limit of 300 dollars. And I got tempted by an LCD monitor, technology which I didnt know well. For no more than 300 dollars I have two AOC LCDs models and one Viewsonic, the VE175. So I began my research about LCDs monitors and sadly I realized that all LCDs within my money limit had 25 ms of latency which was not good for playing games. So, my problem was resolved..I would buy a CRT monitor. Today my PC shop offered me an ACER AL1715B 17" LCD monitor for 299 bucks and my doubts appeared again because this monitor has 12 ms of latency. So here are my questions,
1.- Is it 12ms of latency good enough to play any game?
2.- I have read that LCD monitors have an optimum resolution, usually the highest, due to architecture facts. Although I have a top line vga card, can I play games with a res of 800x600 or 1024x760 with an LCD monitor?.I know there is an image problem changing the optimum res..but how important is this problem?
3.- I know LCD monitors have less viewable angle than CRT monitors. This Acer has 150º view angle. How bad is this? Can I play with someone sitting beside me?
Considering all the doubts above, and remarking that I need the monitor to play, I have 3 options:
1.- Refurbisheb 1999, Ibm P260, DVI 21" CRT monitor for 150 dollars.
2.- A new Viewsonic model Ef or Gf 19" CRT monitor for 226 bucks.
3.- The LCD 17" Hacer AL1715B mentioned above for 299 bucks.
Which one do you recommend me?. Can you answer me the LCD questions?.Let me say also that the question about resolution is really important to me...Thanks a lot...

I may answer a few of your questions:
I have a 17" Samsung 710N, with a native resolution of 1280x1024, 12ms latency. You can probably find one of these for under 300 bucks...But there may be better ones by now.
1- 12ms is good enough IMO. Never noticed any problems on FPS, Racing, RTS or other games...
2- You can use any res. lower than the native, the image wont be as good as in native mode but still very acceptable. I heard some monitors have a better way of showing lower res, others are worse (mine is supposed to be one of the best) but i guess it still shouldnt be an issue. The only problem is reading small text in low res, that could be bad.
3- About the view angle i cant tell if 150 degrees is good or bad, i guess its ok, and i think you can play with someone else.
I would go for an LCD, its way better for work, internet, and good enough for games.

There is one problem with lower resolutions other than interpolation. 17 inch screens usually have a resolution of 1280x1024 like Invaser said, this means it's a ratio of 5:4. CRT's are using the 4:3 ratio meaning they use 1280x960 or lower/higher resolutions with the same ratio. So if the LCD interpolates the pictures to the full screen size you would have distortioned objects on screen because a 4:3 image would be stretched to 5:4. Some LCD's leave a black border around the picture to adapt to the 4:3 ration

Good Day,
Yesterday a new set of Samsung 710N arrived to my dealer now with a substancial reduced price of 280 bucks...I am thinking about buying one of them due to the good reviews I have read in the web...As I have read your post you find this LCD a good piece to play...But I need to ask you only one question:
You said you can lower the res without too much trouble in image quality but still there is some trouble with text..As I said, I have a very good vga card but due to some personal circunstances I need to play games in 800x600 or 1024x768...Please can you confirm me how bad is the loose in quality?...Thanks you again

i never regret buying my 710N Lcd either... both CRT and LCD have its own pros and cons...
About the res, it is indeed better to play with 1280x1024, but i dont notice too much loss on 1024x768 or even 800x600... I should try to play Starcraft (640x480) to see how that looks...
Anyway , i think a good idea would be going to a store and trying one, changing res do 800x600, see for yourself how good or bad it looks...

I really don't see any cons against a CRt other than the size of the arse. With LCD prices dropping rapidly i think if you hold on a month or 2 you'll find a bargain compared to today's prices.

A great TFT is the 17" Iiyama ProLite E430S with 8ms latency for €250. One distinct advantage of TFTs is the lower power consumption, 35W for a 17" panel compared to 115W for a 19" CRT (which is equally large).
