THE HAGUE: A UN war crimes tribunal convicted a former Croatian general of orchestrating a campaign of murder and plunder to drive around 200,000 Serbs from a rebel enclave of Croatia, sentencing him to 24 years in prison.

War crimes are still crimes, mate. Just so you don't get the misunderstanding that you're being "oppressed by the evil British" -- here's the OTHER side of the coin;

Quote:

In 2007, the tribunal convicted former Krajina Serb militia chief Milan Martic of war crimes and jailed him for 35 years. Former Krajina Serb “President” Milan Babic committed suicide in 2006 while serving a 13-year prison term for war crimes.

Like I said; war crimes are still crimes .. and those committing them MUST be held accountable. I'm still waiting for Bush Jr to be dealt with.

Well if you're talking about overall aggression, then no... we weren't. Neither were you. Nor was anyone you've ever known in your entire life, since the Serbs settled in Croatia CENTURIES ago. Now if you're talking about the escalating conflicts in the 90s, then you're wrong about that too; I don't agree with any kind of civil dispute and I strongly oppose all kinds of "ethnic cleansing", as the Krajina Serb generals were wont to do. This has nothing to do with being biased, as I've already evidenced that THOSE monsters were also tried for war crimes. The simple fact is, no matter which side was "right or wrong" - BOTH were responsible for terrible crimes against humanity and BOTH sides should be penalised for it.

The Krajina Serb leaders were punished .. and now it's the Croatian leaders who are being dealt with. It's one thing pleading innocent to these kinds of atrocities, hiding behind the "self defence" card -- but it's NEVER self defence when you're shelling villages of non-combatants. That's just plain wrong, no matter who's doing it.

I'm 43 years old and I was a croatian soldier and I've been there all those 4-5 years! You can't tell me that bullshit Sabin. Sorry I don't want to start a conflict with you here but that's nonsense. Did you ever see or experienced shelling your city and a blasting bomb/shell 20-30 meters from your home which blast your doors, windows? I guess you don't have such experience. Also, why didn't they prosecute dutch government and the dutch battalion in Srebrenica which permitted killing over 8000 people by serbs? Double standards my friend! Double fucking standards....

Nobody here is pretending to know what you've been through as an individual and as part of your country, dude. Surely you posted this to get some sort of response. Long live a free Croatia but not at the cost of NOT prosecuting war criminals Smile

Please properly read what I said, mate Wink The Serbs had settled in Krajina for centuries and conflicts had been going on for decades. I wasn't specifically referring to the Yugoslav War in the 90s, though - as you can see - I DID say that during the escalated conflicts in the 90s, leading up to the independence, both sides were guilty of war crimes and I "side" with neither. Nor was I contesting the claims from either party, just stating the fact that BOTH sides committed atrocities and BOTH sides should be held accountable. You can't sit there and say "they shelled my city!" when it was the Croats who were ALSO shelling CIVILIAN villages!

"I'm going to punch you now, but you can't punch me back or I'm telling mom!" doesn't work in war, mate. Krajina Serb generals were punished, now it's Croation generals who face the same trials. Nobody (least of all me) is picking sides here.

Oh mighty Cthulhu! Not here also! I'm sick of reading it all over news.

GET IT INTO YOUR FUCKING HEAD: WE ARE NOT GUILTY OF DEFENDING OURSELVES! OLUJA ISN'T A CRIME!

What is a crime is what happened afterward to civilians in that area! If that idiot Tuđman and his posse were alive they would be in Haag...

Why are ppl here dumb as hell?!

They will appeal to the sentence.

The only wrong thing is that Gotovina got 24 yrs as a sentence, and the day after Knin was liberated he was relieved of duty from that operation. The other two generals should be the only ones in there...

If you butcher innocent civilians who didn't pick up arms against you, then that's a crime. Shelling civilian towns and villages, no matter WHO does it, is a crime. Period. You don't "defend" yourselves by murdering civilians.

... and once more, for the last time, this goes for EVERYONE. I don't care if it was the Serbs or the Croats; shelling civilian-populated areas is WRONG. It's immoral, it's cowardly and it's a crime. It's MURDER.

Even though I don't fully agree with M4trix strong rhetoric style here, especially aimed at the different governments. I do tend to agree with him. The whole moral imposing on states I tend to have a hard to aligning with.
