Quote:
The demo ran on a PC with an Intel Core i9 microprocessor with three Nvidia GeForce 580 GTX graphics cards connected through SLI technology. The demo took about three months for 12 programmers and artists to build.

Quote:
“This next-generation technology preview is what we would like to see from the next-generation of gaming hardware,” said Alan Willard of Epic Games, which is the well-known game developer that has created games such as Unreal Tournament, Bulletstorm and Gears of War.

I think certain animations were "game" quality, instead of being as smooth and realistic as in a CGI production (eg the recent Deus Ex CGI trailers).

Also the character's face really looks like Deckard at times... That was definitely done on purpose.

A 1080p video of the techdemo has been released: http://www.udk.com/showcase-samaritan

UDK March has been released as well! Now all the tools required to create a game/techdemo as impressive as Epic's are available to everyone! The new version of the UDK brings the following additions:

Quote:
Important DirectX features now shipping with UDK include:

* Tessellation and displacement;
* Geometry shaders;
* Multisampled textures; and
* Shader Model 5.

High-end rendering features include:

* Image-based reflections that allow surfaces of any shape to reflect an approximate version of scenes, with varying glossiness across surfaces, anisotropic HDR highlights and anti-aliasing;
* Subsurface scattering (SSS) that simulates the light that scatters inside semi-translucent materials, making character skin come alive;
* Anti-aliased masked materials that super sample the edges of masked and alpha-tested materials, making character hair more look realistic than ever before;
* Deferred rendering with MSAA support;
* Bokeh depth of field providing close to film-quality DOF, with artist-controllable Bokeh; and
* High-quality dynamic shadows from many lights on the environment, such as shadows for point lights and other light sources.

NVIDIA’s APEX technology has also been integrated into the engine and ships with UDK.

Lastly nvidia released PDFs explaining the tech behind it:
http://www.nvidia.com/content/PDF/GDC2011/Epic.pdf
http://www.nvidia.com/content/PDF/GDC2011/Apex_Clothing.pdf

They are a great read, if you are interested in (and can understand) that sort of thing! Smile

Core i9? Do they mean the Intel's 980Xs and/or 990Xs? I thought Intel dropped the previously-intended usage of i9 a long time ago?

Shame we won't be seeing such tech in action (on end-user machines that is) due to console technical bottleneck. I'd like to see however the idiots, stating that consoles are more powerful than PCs (like that Pachter rat), hide in their pathetic holes and rot as much as possible.

If you're referring to the autumn-coming LGA 2011 processors, I still think they'll preserve their i7s in front of their model name. Not sure though?

This is what I believe since they keep saying that it's running on hardware you can buy on stores today.

Also Mark Rein supposedly said with optimization it could possibly run on one "Ti 500".. but the only Ti in the 5x0 series is the Ti 560 which is obviously not strong enough to run this (hell I don't believe you can run it with one 580..)! The other Ti was in the Geforce 3 era.. So he probably meant a single Geforce 580..

You won't be seeing this tech used extensively because nobody will make a game that targets SLI+ owners. Consoles aren't the problem, in this case, the cost of hardware is.

No. When the hardware becomes cheap, and if new consoles haven't been released yet or are underpowered compared to an affordable gaming PC of that time, sure you can say that.

But for now, no, nobody would make such a demanding game anyway.

Even the GTX480 which is one year old is still a 400$ card. 2+ 580 GTX will take a long time to get affordable.

Well, I want a game based on that. That benchmark is quite useless to me. However, it'd still try it if they released it to the masses. Razz

Imagine a true hard-core, non-simplified and post-apocalyptic RPG with a pretty much authentic Blade Runner atmosphere. It'd wet my pants.

Also, let's not forget that this was a "scripted cutscene". Real gameplay, with real AI, etc will require even more processing power.

Technically, I don't care who's to blame. Personally, I like to blame consoles cause it fits me good. Cool Face They blame PC piracy because a child in Africa is hungry, I'll blame them cause they stop progress. Cool Face

Mark Reign has told 1UP that although it isn't currently in development it is a possibility:

Quote:
"I'm not going to deny that that's possible, but at the same time, if we hadn't had built that technology demo, then we wouldn't have been able to build Gears of War" said Rein.

"It's like, once we build a technology demo and learn how to do things a certain way, it then enables us to do more of that. So I don't want to deny that such a scenario is possible, but it's not currently [happening]"

Rein went on to talk about the future of Epic's Unreal Engine. When asked how the company decided when it would move onto a complete new engine Rein revealed that, traditionally, new engines were released alongside each new generation of hardware.

"What we've done in the past is that we draw the line with the console generations. I don't want to pigeon-hole Unreal Engine as a console-only technology - it's also mobile, handheld, and PC technology. But so far, that's how it works."

"When these new ultra-mass market home entertainment devices come out and set a new bar, that's when you'll see us clicking over to 'Unreal Engine 4′ - which will support those features and who knows what else" explained the Epic exec.

http://www.epicgames.com/news/warner-bros.-interactive-entertainment-licenses-epic-games-unreal-engine-3

Warner Bros licenced UE3 until 2014 for all their internal studios.

Additionally it will be the exclusive engine Rocksteady (creators of "Batman: Arhkam" games) and NetherRealm Studios (who are creating a new Mortal Kombat game) will use in that time period.
