Epic Games isn't just showing off the latest improvements to the Unreal Engine 3 at GDC 2011. They're showing us what the next-generation of games should look like. Do the images hold up to the hype?
These images are from a trailer being shown off at GDC this week, which should be dropping on the general public next week with the weight of a killer mech.

“This is our proposal for what the next generation of gaming is going to be,” Rein said as the demo began.
Here’s the thing, though: all of it honestly, actually – no hyperbole – looks like CG.
“The whole idea behind this is to tell the hardware manufacturers that this is what you should be doing down the road,” Rein explained while the demo rolled.
Some things to note: this was only a tech demo – not a new game. Not that we’d mind if Epic made a Deus Ex-like action game, but we digress. Also crucial: Rein noted that the demo was running on three Nvidia GTX 580s.
At the end of the day, though, this isn’t Unreal 4. It’s still definitely Unreal 3, Rein was quick to clarify. He added, however, that if this were to be given a number, it’d be Unreal 3.975. He also noted that this is a bigger leap than the one between Unreal 2 and Unreal 3 – and it shows.
“If the next game consoles can’t do this, well, Apple increased their iPad by nine times today,” Rein said.

lol Epic...
Yeah, the Gears of War reboot is going to be amazing IF the assbux 720 is able to handle this unreal 3.975 engine.
Find out in 2014.
But the updated tools are either already released or will be released in the very near future. Anybody (literally, as the UDK costs nothing) can use them to reproduce or even surpass what they have demonstrated.
We don't have to wait until 2014 and we don't have to wait for Epic.

Well, that I didn't know.
Probably should of RTFA before posting I guess..
Still, you're right, PC gamers definitely shouldn't wait to see Epic using any of this anytime
soon.
But you'll have to wait to 2014 to the GeOW reboot, write it down!

The DX11 renderer and whatever is missing from the current iteration of the engine will be shipped next month.

The 'Samaritan' video, with debuted just moments ago to a select group of gathered press, demonstrated what is achievable using cutting-edge hardware, the features of the current iteration of UE3, and some of the DirectX 11 UE3 features due in March 2011.

"The whole idea behind this is to tell hardware developers and tell game developers this is what you should prepare for down the road," said Epic vice president Mark Rein.
"There needs to be mass market devices that can do this before too long."
While the demo was made by only three artists, one rigger, and a number of mocap artists, it did run on three graphics cards. However, Rein stated: "We suspect that with a little bit of optimisation this could even run on a single Ti500 card"
Later Rein joked: "Tim Sweeney said that if we did version numbers for Unreal Engine this would be version 3.971."

Amazing, it's impressive that the current(!!!) UE3 engine can produce this kind of visuals! However the performance required currently is far beyond what's affordable right now or would be in the near future by the majority of PC gamers, and unless the next-gen of consoles comes reaaaally late they won't be able to pull this off either.
It would be far more interesting for Epic to make something that can be played by one 580 (or two at most).

Source textures and models usually are very high resolution and detailed and then the model is simplified with a normal map from the high-res version (ZBrush or equal.) to "fake" this at just a fraction of the cost of the performance impact from using all high resolution and high poly detail works.
(Not too rare with games using a thousand+ unique models and textures, Morrowind back then had it for example and didn't even use normal or the simpler bump type mapping.)
(Not to mention thousands of lines of code, script related and engine wise, numerous lines of voice or speech - though voice acting takes resources and valuable disc space.)
(GTA IV apparently being a good example at 10.000+ models and textures though most pretty low detail clutter and decals or how it was along with numerous lines of dialogue in various localizations and such.)
Well the shitty performance AMD cards get with some DX11 features, you might as well call it that.
"Remembers me" when AMD was claiming that SM3.0 is an nVidia gimmick and how they were "imposing" that on gamers to force people to upgrade.
Not might as well. It is. Theres no point arguing if it is or isn't; it's developed by Microsoft and they own it.
You're free to use it of course, but you're not free to make modifications to it and redistribute it, nor can you without some severe reverse engineering.

It is, I should have written that it's not nvidia's proprietary tech, which was my point.

@Epsilon Ah yes, that is not in dispute. But as long as OpenGL is tangled in committees upon committees, bogged down by retarded backwards compatibility concerns, it will never shine, and will always trail. Sometimes a little less, sometime a little more, but always behind.
“We have a pretty good idea of what’s coming next,” said Capps, who added that Epic is already in pre-production on a brand new title for the next generation of game machines.
And since there aren't any console SDKs by MS and Sony for their next consoles this can only mean they are targeting and developing for the PC platform, at least for now.

Epic Games, the company behind the Unreal franchise, has announced that it is using NovodeX physics in Unreal Engine 3, which may be the 3D game engine developers will use to build games on in 2006.
That was written in 2005.
And isn't APEX simply an improvement of PhysX?
So the only new nvidia proprietary tech that has been added is 3D Vision..

yeah but having 3 graphics cards just to have : shiny graphics [card nr1], physics aka Physx[card nr2], cloth simulation aka APEX [card nr3] its plain retarded same as having a PC that takes 2000kw to just only run games in 1080p
