I read that book about half a year ago, it's a little bit more complicated than most others out there but definitely worth the read.
And it's one of the few that really criticises string theory, a welcome change in the popsci world dominated by the likes of Kaku and Greene. (please dont get me wrong, their books are awesome too)
Roger Penrose's The Road to Reality is even better if you have the time to read it because it is a true complexity monster. Bought it the same time as Smolins book but still haven't made it past page 50 yet Very Happy
Both Smolin and Penrose are on similar levels, so if you want a little bit of counter-contemporary stances get their books.

Road to reality is an excellent book. A bit hard for layman, but if you wish to get a grasp and some understanding of basic math/physics it's I think the bets book to do so Smile
