My PC is proper shagged lately Sad Takes upwards of 4 minutes to boot to desktop (instead of 40s like it used to be), games are lagging and freezing all the time, GPU fan goes apeshit sometimes - locking itself at 100%, then spinning up and down from 50-100, desktop freezes up, file transfers sometimes bog down to slow speeds no matter which HDD I copy to/from. *sigh* My baby is dying Crying or Very sad Right now I get all of 10-12fps in F.E.A.R (yes, the original FEAR) even though it was vsync locked at 60 just a couple weeks ago. Every so often the desktop will freeze, clicking anything brings up the "Explorer is not responding" nonsense.

Games are fucking up. File browsing is fucking up. Performance is fucking up.

FML.

I should be able to afford to replace the dying components (either GPU or CPU ... or both, knowing how atrocious my luck is) sometime in the next... hmmm... six months. Wee<!>

You checked for a virus? Can you research if a certain process is causing it? I wouldn't exclude win7 as culprit either, the multitasking core seems buggy. I need to restart my pc so now and then if the system shows signs of freezing. I have recurring short freezes.

Sounds like a virus..it's not possible that all the components decided to implode at the same time, I don't know what to say honestly :/

Definitely not a virus, I'm afraid. Ran deep system scans with NOD, Avast and MSE .. all came up clean. Not even any false positives from keygens/cracks. It hasn't happened suddenly, this shit has been going on for weeks now - probably months - just gradually getting worse all the time.

Have you tested the system without OC (both CPU and GPU)?

So either a hardware component that does not crash the pc but slows it down or the current installation. Run some hardware diagnostics like this perhaps:

If the whole system starts acting up like that (and temperatures are fine) its possible that it's the memory.
At least you can check for errors rather quickly and eliminate the possibility that something is wrong with the RAM.
(memtest86+ or windows memory diagnostics, there is also a program that runs under windows)

I hope you installed them scanners only for the scan? Having them all loaded will already rape the system

Anyway, as suggested run memtest to make sure it's not the memory.

However, it MIGHT also be your hard drive. You can use CrystalDiskMark to check your sequential read speed, that should still be pretty high (4k random read will be terribly low for mechanical drives).

That's why I prefer a Mac with OSX! And perhaps an extra pc if you have to play Crysis 2. But I guess this tip isn't of much use to you Wink

"That"? Care to elaborate? You think that OS X won't slow down with more processes running, or when the memory breaks, or when the hard disk gives up?
Or do you prefer it because Apple released an update that (amongst other things) completely breaks printing in anything that requires the PS-to-PS filter (i.e. all the Adobe applications with most big printers), which is a *pretty* big deal in the graphic industry? Not to mention how unlike Microsoft, they don't roll out hotfixes for serious issues like this.

I'm sorry but as much as you hate Apple bashing, this is just useless trolling and like most other OS X users, without any ground. OS X can't deal with failing hardware any better, and it is just as vulnerable to flaws in drivers (because yes, OS X does have drivers just like any other OS).

For complete dumb fucks it's harder to fuck anything up, but if you have the slightest clue about what you're doing, you can just as easily fuck things up (or fix them).

You could have some kind of malware that's not detected, and is slowing down your PC. I mean you do watch videos on efukt, and last time I went there I got tons of shit on my PC...

Also try to defrag, delete unnecessary things...

What I would suggest is to firstly clean up your computer out of any dust clogged up in different places. You have to disassemble the whole machine. Take everything out of the chassis. You might wanna put some fresh thermal paste onto the CPU, just in any case. And make sure the cooler radiator/heater is delivering a maximum contact between itself and the processor.

Then you have to start checking your hardware by running different stability tools. This is a really unusual behaviour your computer is putting forth, so load yourself with some patience as you have to check up every part of the hardware.

RAM - Memtest is a reliable utility. The best thing is to burn a disk up with it and let it test the memory overnight.

Processor - well, LinX (combined with the latest Linpack libraries - http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-math-kernel-library-linpack-download/ ). Remove the overclock settings. Maximum memory utilization + at least 20 loops. You could use Prime95 on SmallFFTs as well for at least 6 hours.

Video card - games are more than enough. If the video's exhibiting troubling symptoms while in-game, they'll more likely show up as graphical artifacts. Try different driver suites in any case. Don't try that Furmark bitch as it might kill your card and finish it off completely.

HDD - AIDA64 can be used or HD Tune. The latter has a nice feature which shows the overall health of your drive (or drives).

Lastly, reinstall Windows, just to ensure yourself there's no file or system corruption messing with your machine. Smile

Or maybe just reformat?

I recently did it to my laptop, and I have to say it's much less of a hassle than it used to be.

I basically just backup my User folder, reformat and copy it back in, then install browser and I am good to go. With all vital documents in DropBox and Google Docs, Google Mail and Google Calendar there is nothing I really need to think about, Browser settings are retained with Opera Sync, I have no crazy desktop customization like I used to, and even most games are on Steam; but I don't play that much anymore either.

Then I install a couple of codecs, flash and some other minor stuff and I am back where I left off 2 hours ago with a shiny fresh windows.

Instead of reformatting he could just pop in a linux (ubuntu) live CD and check if his system vworks right.

And to me it actually sounds as if your powersource is dying! More than anything else...

So, you had your PC overclocked how much and for how long ?

Anyway, it may just be the RAM, re-seat half of them, leave the others out.

sometimes when its dying slowly you get sporadic failure out the blue on transfers or other shit.. Mine used to be ok after boot up then it would degrade over time depending where shit was written too..
