There's still a small bug with mouse sensitivity, like the 1st one. I had to lower mine a bit and now the mouse moves incredibly slow in the menu's. Nothing game breaking, but still, just shows how these devs are regarding PC ports.

I love these console ports, which basically punish me for good FPS reflexes. Why, oh why is there no option to turn off all sorts of smoothing and acceleration (negative one, in this particular case), when that used to be the fricking standard for hardcore shooters? What is it with devs, that it's so hard to realize, some people are fast, and they can't enjoy games, if it's holding them back on purpose.

I play all my games with high sensitivity, from RTSs to FPSs. I want to make minimal effort for maximal gain. I am precise, and have invested in a good mouse in order to achieve that goal. If I use slow movements with my mouse, then it turns at a nice fast speed, but whenever I want to make a reflex quick shot, it slows my mouse down via negative accel, and I end up missing. Missing is not an option on Zealot mode.

Don't tell me, it's a desig decision, because they then would limit the camera turning speed, which they don't, they cap the mouse movement speed. Completely different. The faster you flick your mouse, the slower it turns the camera.

Not to even start talking about basic things like two different sensitivity multipliers for Y an X. You have to be made of an extra special type of imbecile to hard code that in your game.

I know I'm venting here, but fuck consoles already!

Just finished it.

I liked the game a lot, mostly because it was more of the same from Dead Space 1, which I also liked a lot. I did find it had a bit to high of a tempo, which dampened the scariness for me. Still, I played it very slowly just so I could get and explore everything.

Well worth the purchase for me, but then I'm a fan of the series mostly because of the setting.

Yup yup, played, finished and deleted. Not much replayability for me. Was that game supposed to be scary? Hardly. 7,5/10 for me. Kinda repetitious as games are nowadays.

"Lighting" development diary:

Apparently they have a dedicated team of people lighting the "sets" and some sets have hundreds of lights!

In general their engine isn't that great but what does stand out is their deferred rendering setup that does a great job setting the tone with multiple dynamic colored lights. I can really "feel" the lighting in the 2 Dead Space games, it makes the games come alive. Smile

Right, so here's my two cents about this game. Note: I'm not done yet, taking my time to explore every little corner I can find. I'm at chapter 9 now I think, not sure about time played (I'll edit that in later when I get home).

First of all: yes, it's a very linear shooter, but that's fine to be honest. You can explore a little bit, there's plenty of smaller rooms you can go into and get some extra cash and/or ammo. You can't go running around the station freely, but that would take away from the experience. Story wise, it's pretty good and it's executed properly.

The shooting part is quite amusing, if a bit easy. I'm playing it on the highest difficulty (well 4th anyway). What makes it fun is the different weapons - they actually have very different uses, and combined with stasis it's just a lot of fun to figure out the quickest way to deal with particular monsters. That said, I've not yet run into any ammo issues (or died for that matter), but I suspect that if you don't make every shot count you will have issues. I've also decided to upgrade my stasis (2 points into my suit for HP, rest all gone into stasis and weapons), which makes it even more amusing to put a bunch into stasis and just cut off their limbs one by one, or punch the shit out of them while they can't hit back Razz

Graphically, the game looks good. Textures should've been of a higher resolution, and I didn't care much for the in-game AA option (using MLAA instead, works quite well I must say). It's not the best looking title out there at all, but it looks better overall than Mafia 2 for example. They worked around the limitations of their engine very well in order to make the graphics fit the game. The sound is good, although there are far too many audio cues, which kinda takes away the "OH SHIT" factor from the scare moments (which haven't actually scared me or made me go "OH SHIT" yet Sad). They do however manage to get the atmosphere right. Everything's dark and creepy, and the station really looks like all hell broke loose. Mafia 2 did absolutely nothing for me, even though I know some people somehow did like the "atmosphere" in that game. If you thought that was good, this game must be like heaven for you :E

I do have a small gripe with the controls however, and this very clearly is caused by the fact that it's a console title first, PC second. There's the retarded weapon layout; they're laid out on a cross, with default bindings being 1 for the upper slot, 2 for bottom, 3 for left and 4 for right. I'm sorry, but while that works for a d-pad (which I assume is how you switch weapons with a gamepad?), it doesn't when you number them. Next is the mouse. While it is responsive, I have the sensitivity set to the lowest setting, and it is still far too sensitive for my liking unless I switch the DPI on my mouse down from 5700 to under 3000. There is also a little bit of negative acceleration. Again, I'm sure that is fine when using a gamepad, but a gamepad doesn't give me the precision+speed a mouse can give me so piss off with pads Smile

VSync also makes the game run awefully choppy; I didn't check the FPS, but I'm guessing it caps to 30 again, instead of 60.

Last but not least, the game also has some "quick events" where you're grabbed by something big and can't move, with the only option to hit its vulnerable points. I don't care much for these events, but there's not that many of them so it's fine really. What I do miss is the ability to quickly punch something in the face with the butt of your weapon or something, the normal melee animations are too slow to be very useful in straight combat (but like I said, amusing when using stasis).

The good:
- Good atmosphere
- Nice variety in weapons and combat tactics

The bad:
- Silly console-oriented controls
- Silly mouse movement
- Turning on VSync makes the game run choppy on my system

The bottomline:
Very amusing game, provides a nice story driven experience. Not a die-hard shooter, but the variety in tactics to employ makes up for that. It looks and sounds good - most importantly, the looks and sound get the atmosphere across. It does get predictable however, which is its major downside for me. For me, it's an 8 / 10.

A short note: I used to play the Quake games and HLDM (+AG) quite seriously, so I'm very sensitive to how games react to my mouse movements. I've always played with a low sensitivity, and I'm used to making arm movements (rather than wrist movements). Over the years my relative sensitivity in games has gone down because the mice I've used went up in DPI. As an example, in CoD and QL I nowadays set my sensitivity to 0.5-0.7 @ 5700 DPI. I also hate any form of acceleration, I want 1:1 movement. So my notes about the mouse above are highly subjective, and will probably only apply to people who have been playing FPS games just as long and despise acceleration as much as I do Wink

Regarding the difficulty level "Zealot" (4th) differs from the easy, normal, hard average levels in that you die in just a few hits but so too does all enemies so precise aiming is rewarded as one or two shots from any weapon will be a guaranteed kill minus a few enemy types or special encounters.
(Less ammo and other support items around as well but I never had a problem with that.)

Hardcore is the same but further removes the amount of support items found and you only have three saves per level or some such limit with no checkpoints in between.

Yeah that's what I did, got a profile for DS2 with MLAA and VSync, still retarded that they call it VSync ingame though. Should be called "Limit FPS" or something like that. Or perhaps "Console mode" Wink

Let me guess, you played on normal, or easy difficulty.. Cool Face

I know many ppl that play games on easiest difficulty and then say: "pff it was nothing special the game.."

That's because you didn't put any effort in the game.. It's not scary when you're nearly invulnerable, carry unlimited amount of ammunition and have raised the brightness to max because you can't see everything..

The lighting was quite impressive in the game, indeed. Sound design was nice as well, especially in surround, but it had a few downsides though.

Firstly, the background sounds felt too repetitive for me, so you quickly learn to ignore them simply as non-threatening ambience. Some metallic junk falling on the ground behind you every 30-60 seconds with a loud clunky noise stops to draw your attention after a few minutes into the game, no matter how technically great it sounds. Penumbra managed to pull this off with much better results, making you stop and listen to every sound. Although it's probably because that was a much scarier game, with greater sense of danger Smile

And yeah, the music gives a lot away. I kinda got used to the simple fact: no scary music - nothing to worry about. In a few times when the timing is just perfect, the musical cues do in fact amplify the effect, but most of the time, the timing is a bit off and this only serves to warn you.

All in all, this game is mostly about the setting for me, so I enjoyed it quite a lot. The first one had a bigger sense of isolation, relying on the familiar deserted spaceship idea. Even in DS2 [minor spoiler Chapter 9.. I think]
 Spoiler:

Still, the game improves on a lot of things while retaining most of it's original strengths, making it a great game overall.

What's a good difficulty level for a not so easy but also not frustrating experience? "Normal" does not have the same meaning it had in the past, so it's impossible to judge the difficulty.

well most games these days let you change the difficulty in the options, so i always start at normal (mid-range seems the most obvious starting level to me), and adjust accordingly if its too easy.

I played on the level just above normal (Survivalist, I think). Seemed like a pretty good balance. Always close enough to running out of ammo, and close to death at times, while allowing a few screw ups. Didn't die often enough to get frustrated (except in the final battle.. took me over an hour to understand that my usual approach - do as much damage as possible to the main target, ignore lesser threats - is just not gonna cut it, at least not with my setup, had to play carefully through this one).

If it gets too easy, just bump it up a notch Smile

I played on surviver difficuculty, which is the next after Normal, and it was ok, even a bit easy, only restarted 3 encounters repeatedly, and it was only because I didn't want to waste so much ammo and medkits..

Yes, I played it on normal I think. But still, there were no suddenly frightening moments. It was even predictable at times as someone said. I don't think the thrill can live up the whole game if you are just mainly doing the same thing all the time (and predicting upcoming events). Anyway, it was not bad, and I did not decide to play the game because of horror.

It was rather good action nonetheless.
