My pc is freezing when I try to unlock the screen (as in away for 10 minutes, it asks for the password, I type it but it stays "authenticating" forever and I have to reboot by pressing the button).

Happens both in Linux (running e17) and Windows 7. On linux it stays on the authenticating screen, mouse still works, I can kill x with ctrl alt bksp. On windows the screen stays black, but mouse still works (keyboard doesn't).

I guess its hardware, so what could it be? HDD? Ram?

I noticed the hard drive (don't know which one though, I have 5) is noisier lately.

Yeah, I'd check the memory first, because it is a usual suspect in cases like these, and it is easier to test. Get the memtest iso and let it run for a few hours (not just one run). Then you can use poweruser software like Spinrite to test your harddrives properly. Problems could also be due to CPU and/or motherboard, but from the behavior you describe, where similar things happen on both Windows and Linux, start with mem and hdd. Smile

Now I think it might be software... it happens every time on linux, but only after the last arch update (pacman -Syu) I did. And it's happening only occasionally on windows. It probably has nothing to do with the HDD 'cause it also happens when the drive is still spinning (like 10s after I manually locked the screen). I'll try to find out if it's a linux bug then...
