|
 |
Some of you might know that I moved to my own flat (FINALLY) and I have a ... ehm... 30cm(?) TV and no monitor for my computer.
So... instead of spending money twice I thought about getting one big screen to use as PC monitor and TV in one
The following things apply:
46"+
NO Plasma!
A thin device would be really nice (thus edge-lit LED would be great!)
If not, what would you say, go with LCD or LED?
Some 3+ hdmi, dvi or vga or so would be great!
100Hz+
24p
of course good picture quality so that I can use it as computer display too
and now to the really critical point:
<850€ (the less, the better)
For example this one:
LG 47LE5300 (47")

I dont know what games you plan to play on them however do remember that you must take some distance from this monitor because you wont see shit elsehow. If you have the space to do this, its fine however since I atleast have a abhorrent hate of wireless devices this will create the wire problem.

@ragedoctor: I have enough space in between
@Hfric: Why Samsung? They seem to have a VERY unstable quality... some are good, some suck shit :/ A friend of mine has a 42" samsung and I didn't like the picture very much... But maybe it was his faulty settings (am not touching his device).
I'm open for recommendations... There is another good one -> 46" toshiba 733 for 850€

I concur. I tried to use a 32" as a monitor and replaced it with a good old 24" very soon because it's fine if you do some photoshop stuff or 3D modeling but even reading the humps becomes a headache because either you turn your head all the time if the monitor is close or you put if farther away from you and feel some discomfort anyway because something is wrong (we're too used to have the monitor 30cm or something away from the face).
So once again it will be okay for games and or gfx but for daily tasks like web or text typing or anything else it's bad*.
* a few colleagues agree about this, they tried too
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

I know It's just easier to separate them by writing LCD and LED instead of LED-back-light LCD xD
Took a closer look at that one live and the LG looks nice 47le5300

Problem with big screens used as a monitor, the way I see it, is that you need to be relatively close to see what you're doing (typing, reading etc.). Especially if you're on 1080p. Sure for games and movies that's perfectly fine, but it's really pain in the butt to be that close while reading and writing.
That's why I have separate TV and monitor for comp...

Why do I need to be close? The font is thanks to the large screen bigger

Let me warn against it. I have tried several times to use my 32" LG LCD as a monitor, and it's really bad. To see the text, you need to be quite close to the LCD, by which time you can already see the LCD matrix and its distracting. From far you don't see them, but from close it's bad. Depending on the DPI of your current monitor, get really close to it and imagine having to work like that all the time. Bad.

I would think, that a big 1080p screen would actually allow you to sit farther away while seeing the text clearly, as opposed to a smaller screen, where 1080p makes things a bit too small for proper reading at range.
In most cases though, "good for both" approach won't work, since at 47" you would need your screen to be further away, and for most room arrangements (sitting behind a desk for PC use) that doesn't work out very well.
If your arrangement allows for decent range with comfort for everyday use, then the size shouldn't be much of a problem. Especially if you have a wireless mouse/keyboard. If you deal with a lot of text reading/editing/coding etc, then I suspect it wont be as comfortable as a usual monitor setup in the long term. Don't have much personal experience with something like that though.
Edit: Aside from wireless keyboard/mouse, which are not really necessary if you don't need to input some text, I use the wired 360 controller with Xpadder for my remote control needs and it works very well for me.

This, I also have LG 32", and it's really hard to read stuff off of it...movies and games are awesome to

Bought the LG 47LE5300 and it will arrive on Thursday.
So it says MKV, H264, MPEG, DIVX playback, MP3 Audio, WMA, AAC ...
Will I be able to watch my favourite 1080p / 720p rips with it?

No way of knowing until you try. Some TVs and BD/DVD players advertise that but choke on any decent rip, others do it just fine

LGs Media Player plays almost everything.
I don`t know if DTS is working now (it`s not working with mine - 2 Years old 37") - everything else works fine. 1080p MKVs, avis, jpgs, mp3, whatever I throw at it in whatever container - it plays almost everything.
I still have a computer connected - it`s more convenient imo.

Regular rips, not Web-DLs, should work fine. If you're lucky Web-DL versions will work too. As for using a big ass LCD as a monitor fulltime, it sucks. Get a cheap monitor too.

I use my 50" plasma from time to time with my computer. It's nice, but it feels abit silly to have that big screen and only full HD resolution. Thats why I prefer using my tripple monitor setup instead.
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

Rich? lol not at all. The 50 plasma took me 4 years to pay and the tripple monitor setup was the result from working overtime for like 20 hours or so
