So it's new year's eve again and people are starting to make a lot of noise with fireworks. Right now my cat is going crazy and hiding under a bed in the attic. I feel sorry for her but there's not a whole lot I can do at this moment. What does seem to help is to let your pet listen to recordings of fireworks, and gradually increase the volume. Eventually they should get that there is no real danger.

ur cats a sissy eh... yeah.. comes from growing up in a mac household... Wink

but yeah, definately keeping them inside is the best thing to do... also, i guess just having a more noisy environment, so that theyre used to a bit of sudden noise every now and then - never had a problem with my cats like that because loud noises never spooked em.

I have two cats. The oldest one (10 yo.) doesn't even blink and couldn't care less. The other (7 yo.) is hiding under the bed though. He never got used to it.

My family at home have always had dogs. Some of them where scared shitless and the rest of them didn't understand wtf was going on. Either way, I don't use fireworks because of it.

I think I really have to train the cat a little, she was just terrified. Should have thought of that before I bought a box of fireworks to raise hell in front of my house . I guess it'll be a few days before my cat will be killing mouses again. She caught a bird once also. So she's got some balls and I hope she'll get over it Wink

Stop being a wimp. So what. You're cat is getting a bit frightened, but nothing is going to hurt it. The cat which will be scared for what? a few hours at max after last firework is no reason to skip out on tradition.

My cat is still freaked out and has been hiding under the bed for more than an entire day now... Maybe I should get her some anafranil -- vets seem to be prescribing regular antidepressants to calm anxious pets Exclamation

Yep, that can help scared animals to come through that. My cats would also be scared shitless during these times :\

Antidepressants for animals? What's next? Scheduling psychiatrist appointments?

Actually it does make sense to me. If you see an animal with a bone fracture, you'll have the vet take care of it. If your pet can't behave normally because of anxiety and antidepressants help, I don't see why we should deny the animal the antidepressants.

My friends mom's a doctor and she gave half or quarter of Apaurin to her dogs on new years eve.

They are even prescribing human drugs for animals. For instance I've heard that they are giving phenobarbital to dogs that suffers from epilepsy.
