My question is: what thoughts do you want us to have about the state? You are trying to spread a message after all (On second thoughts I already know. Its evil! )
It's an interesting subject, which I've never given much thought but I'll give my very brief and uninformed opinion anyway.
Obviously there are many theories regarding the origin of state. A few are mentioned in the lecture, with the most prominent being: The Force Theory (China) and The Divine Theory (India). I think it's logical to deduce that ultimately the states arose from a combination of theories because in essence all states are based upon the complex social structure of their civilization and region.
I can't deny the vid does display a negative perspective of the authoritative regimes involved. For instance, the 2 main states of government upon which Fukuyama bases his discussion (China and India) are perhaps produced from systems of control - either through religious coercion or military force - and are not willingly assembled.
However this does not mean, that I now think all forms of governing authority are evil but I definitely agree that it's right to question and in some cases change is needed. Whether that is decentralization, I dont know, that could be viewed as a step backwards.
Anyway theres some derp for you and I couldn't watch the whole thing as my house mates kept interrupting me.
I want you to discuss, I am indeed trying to convey a message that the State is illegitimate and undesirable, because it is a fact (a rather ignored one), not because I want you to think a certain way.
All States are authoritarian by nature because all States need to use coercive force for you to support them, either by taxation or to fight along their side.
States form out of very complex circumstances, like Fukuyama presented on that video, but the coercive nature of it is rather simple and obvious to observe!
All authority needs to be questioned, you would never accept and comply to someone who attempts to yield some authority over you, you will only comply with any authority in two circumstances, either that authority has an overwhelming power and force and threatens to use it if you refuse to comply (hostage situation), or you are in a situation where you perceive the logical rationale that some authority tries to inflict (a parent arguing with his/her kid because he's playing in the middle of the road with a complete reckless behavior), (paternal authority or legitimate authority), all authority can only be legitimate when it's tested against logic and proves itself as legitimate, all others are coercive in nature and only exist because of the use the force.
He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither
