I'm having trouble deciding a) between android devices and b) between selling out for the awesome iOS game library. Oh, having a wireless hotspot (android only) is pretty top of the list as well.

not to worry, I get a new upgrade next december 30th 2011 as well so definitely a dual-core android honeycomb will be coming then, this only has to last a year Wink

I promise to get whatever the winner is in here, with pics to prove it come Dec. 30th.

Other suggestions besides what they have on the website are not welcome Wink

You can scratch out HTC immediately and then it depends purely on whether you want the APPARENT feeling of full control over your phone (Android) and no apps at all or just the AWESOME Iphone4 with console-like games Smile

iPhone is great an all but twice the HTC it is not worth it. Get the Desire Z, most of the games will come out to Android as well eventually. It is getting a large market share and it is a viable platform for developers.

You're talking out of your ass. Desire Z has 1.5Gb for apps and let's take a look at the Handheld Section: ooh, every game is like what? 300-700 mb? Dream on about getting them on your Androids.
Even now just take a look at what games are available? Asphalt, Angry Birds, NOVA1, Modern Combat1 & Doodle Jump? And THAT'S ALL? Laughing

So all talk about 'apps eventually coming to A Market' is bullshit. Just a get a friend's Android phone a check out their local pathetic excuse for Installous (Appznet or whatever the name is) that is down 90% of the time. You'll be lucky to have a new iteration of Tetris once a week instead of PSP quality games on iOS.

And my dearest Leo, even if we ignore the subject of poorness of available software and the lack of space for it in the phones (LMAO @devs and hardware manufacturers), who said I was against Android..........? The Galaxy S IS an Android phone and I honestly recommended to choose it or the I4. The Desire Z is a 'niche' model for those who really know they want a physical qwerty keyboard.

My bad, I was thinking about the Desire HD. Wink But it is always possible to buy a cheap MicroSD card and use that for memory.

The 'derp' part was about the way you formulated your previous post. Laughing

Unfortunately the Desire HD ain't any better in terms of software. Gorgeous screen - yeah, maybe (S-AMOLED in the Galaxy S still beats it). But the touchscreen responsiveness is much worse than in Desire, for example.

And as to software - devs were seriously scared off by one simple problem: the amount of different hardware and different OS versions. Even now the same Agry Birds build can run @ 3fps on a $800 device or run fullspeed on a $300 one and vice versa. It's a nightmare that requires weeks of optimization but sales are minimal if compared to Iphone. As Gameloft confirmed themselves - they're porting some stuff to A just as part of building an image for the company and it's a complete waste of money.

What about WP7? Laughing
It is even more retardedly locked down thank iOS (because Apple had enough time to learn from mistakes), but has a defined set of hardware specs, and has a powerful gaming platform (XNA), including XBL integration. lol wut

I see on that site one "LG Optimus Quantum" for a $49.95; seems like a catch.

It is interesting indeed where the WP7 will lead. I don't like it, but it seems to be on the same path as Iphone.

I can't say anything about WP7 yet cos i've only seen a couple of prototypes. With proper hardware like Nvidia Tegra it can become a fantastic mobile gaming platform but I can't imagine any market domination attempts because iOS = millions of devices already there and WP7 = 0.

Btw speaking about Tegra - working prototypes were shown 2 years ago multitaskingly playing 720p vids and PSP quality 3D games on a thin tablet device but no one even tried to integrate it. I guess it's like with everything on the market - why sell the top shit right now if we can still make billions by selling lower grade hardware & people being orgasmically happy about it?

Apps aside, what exactly makes the iPhone and iOS so much better in your opinion? Because I've had to set up a whole bunch of iPhones at work for use with the company's email, caldav and everything, and it's really fucking cumbersome (besides me there's no real IT guy, so despite never having worked with an iPhone, let alone 4, I figured out where to do what the fastest). The fact that to change a setting you gotta go back to the homescreen to get to the settings in the first place is pretty annoying when you're already in the mail app. When I'm in the mail app, I want to be able to change mail settings right then and there. Either there is some weird non-apparent trick to instantly jump to the settings from one of the apps, or the UI design really isn't as intuitive as it should be. I really still don't get what it is that makes Apple fans drool so much over iOS.

As far as apps go: regular apps are just as good as the ones found for iPhones, it's just gaming where it really has a serious advantage right now. Then again, I rarely do gaming, and when I do it's something like Angry Birds, which runs fine on my Desire.

Well with iOS 4 you can use the multitasking mechanism for that. Laughing Run the settings once, and then when you double click the home button, it will be there in a frozen state for all apps.

Razz

Also I need to re-iterate that I need to buy something my carrier sells, which is why I'm having this dilemma in the first place. You can see with the carrier discount that cost means nothing (also obviously cost of desire z includes having to buy a 16gb micro sd card)

I love the feel of the aluminum htc desire z, but don't really see the need for the keyboard (there should be a game gripper coming out shortly which will be awesome for the snes emulator) -- I would buy the desire hd if it was available without question.

Samsung Galaxy has awesome specs + screen, but feels like cheap plasticky crap

iphone ... well, fuck it's still a candidate. the biggest downfall is not having mobile hotspot, which really is only important a couple times a year (ie being away for work and not having wifi available with a thinkpad I'm can't install anything on -- I'm assuming I can't tether without installing something on the laptop)

Also, guess this poll runs forever so expect a bump on the 30th when I get the new phone Razz

you can install mywi on a jailbroken iphone and use it as a hotspot.
i downloaded latest ep of misfits at work w. my iphone when internet at work was down.

all you need is mywi... run it and it'll pop up as a wifi network available on your lappy.

biggest downfall of idevice is itunes since it runs best on an apple machine and on some windows machine it's quite possibly the worst media software in the world.

^^ forgot to mention that. I didn't even let my wife buy an ipod because I didn't want to install itunes...

is there an "app" that lets me use the iphone like a regular usb drive? I really like to drag and drop shit, none of this syncing bullshit.

desire z = $500 - $420 discount = $80, iphone4 16gb = $660 - $500 discount = $160

so even though it's twice the price both are not even close to the cost.

You can SSH (and thus SCP) to JB iFag devices, so no worries, you can always not install iTunes and still be able to put and remove files there as you see fit. Wink

Yes, I got my iPhone 4 very cheap through a business deal, but I'm not sure it's worth twice the price of a Desire just for the (indeed amazing for a mobile platform) games.

Doesn't the monthly fee go up like crazy for you? That's what stopped me from ever getting an iPhone. I've been paying around €25/month for years now (and getting a new phone every time it comes up for renewal), with any iPhone that would be around €40/month :/

Yeah my €25 thing is also with a data plan, and some call minutes/SMS limits (I actually have no clue how much anymore cuz it's gone up and I never even reached my limit anyhow Razz), but the *exact* same data plan with the exact same call minutes/SMS limits suddenly costs €40 if I had gone for the iPhone o_O

No idea how it works in CA, but in the US the iphone data plan *WAS* (Read - *WAS*, they no longer offer unlimited data, but offer capped for less per month) $30 a month. Really not any more expensive then non-iphone data plans. Now they offer 500mb a month for like $15, and more for more. Getting the iPhone doesn't make your bill realistically that much more expensive - Unless you didn't have a data plan to begin with.

My vote is with the iPhone 4. Has the best looking screen. I like the way it looks/feels (Even though it is fragile). Has the best selection of applications. Works just like an iPod. (Important if you have a car and/or other shit that works only with ipods) I like it.
