Ok, I have no Idea how they managed that. Bad programing? Management? Why were they working in 5100x3000 in the first place? Monitors back then were barely capable of 1024x768. Game in the end used simple prerendered backgrounds and 3d characters. The same that you see in nearly all todays adventure games and its just not logical to use so much space and spend such amounts of money. Maybe for the time it could be excusable, this was the dawn of 3D and people still experimented and didn't know how to do things, but today you can just hire someone from cgsociety or a similar place and he'll singlehandedly reproduce all that for petty cash.

Thanks for having a minimal respect for fellow posters! It's proof of maturity from your behalf ...

Okay, here are some movies, that explore the main theme better, and there are much, much more in literature, but I doubt you read any, by the way you react.
AI for one presents the "almost-human" condition way better
Dark City explores the the correlation of memory and emotions way better
Solaris(72) presents a credible reaction to one's realization of his/her true existence
And finally, if you want a very good drama about genetic engineering, then you can bet on Gattaca

The main theme of Blade Runner is what it means to be human, what it means to be a conscious being without freedom but potential, on a basic level, a theme that is very shallowly presented, and with characters, that are two dimensional.

The genre of the movie is a neo-film noir, that's partially the reason we have such two dimensional characters, like the femme fatale, the cop with flexible morality ... etc. The only good part of this is the retrofitted future, which is goes hand in hand with the dark atmosphere a film noir should have.

Also, I'm sure many of you have read, I mean, if you're true fans, you must have, about the conflicts on set: Harrison vs Scott. Anyway, look it up ... you might find out Harrison is damn right on this one.

Very shallow, yet pretentious, self-important movie ... perfect for snobs... much like anything, with style over substance.

I'd say your interpretation and analysis of Blade Runner is very shallow yet pretentious and self-important. Very snobbish of you. Wink

Seriously, you're simplifying the concept by claiming it's about what it means to be human when there's so much more to it. While your opinion is valid (for you) your analysis is severely lacking and it seems you missed out on what made Blade Runner so good.

as an experiment, i took the original game dvds, a c&c .mix editor and extracted a video out, converted it to avi and took it into after effects for some post production, now that we have high res material to work off of
i think it turned out pretty good, concidering the source material
 Spoiler:

and that's without applying proper deblocking algorithms
the only thing stopping a restoration project now is that the c&c .mix editor does not recognise blade runner's internal file names
i tried importing a modified video and set the ID to match, but the game crashes as the internal file name is not set
i'm not a big enough of a hacker to figure the format out though

Unfortunately we don't have enough pics of the original hi res art for this to work and it's implied in that article that these pictures is all that has been rescued.

VQAtoAVI 2 version 1.36 works fine for me

yea, there's not a lot of the images, but enough to create atleast a partial patch
and still, running deblocking on the vqa videos and recompressing them with higher bitrate would be better than nothing

Well it doesn't work for me Sad

Even if we could recreate the HD art, we can't be sure that the engine could display it.
For all we know it accepts 640x480@65k color images only...

I wish someone would do that, but the game isn't very well known even amongst adventure fans and there's no fan community, not to mention that who knows how the copyright holders would respond to something like that.

well obviously the resolution would have to be 640x480 or binary patch the engine to play at different resolution
but 640x480 is plenty at that quality anyway.. the problem was the compression artefacts, which we can do away with now that fitting on a cd is not needed

Then I am not sure it's worth it.

There's this VQA encoder: http://www.ppmsite.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8337 since you could extract a small video try to clean it a bit and convert it to VQA again and post screenshots of the original VQA and the final VQA.

Makes sense, in October scummvm became compatible with Blade Runner, now GOG releases it and (thanks to scummvnm) it works on mac and linux.

Nice! Time for a replay!

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

This was one of the last adventure games with a big budget - after this, it was pretty much downhill for the genre as publishers lost interest. It was a final big "hurah!" - amazing game but it didn't sell too well because (a) Blade Runner isn't that big a brand and (b) the game lacked subtitles so any country where they didn't dub the sound, had lots of returns from people who found the game too hard to play.

My English was by far top of the class (I was 17 at the time) and even for me it was often difficult for me to fully understand the dialogue. Some of it wasn't that crisp and clear. It was a big mistake not to add subtitles, especially considering a lot of the stuff is technical jargon.

Well, for me the visual presentation and the randomisation were unprecedented for an adventure game. A very innovative game.

Weird thing was that I played the game a lot before ever watching the movie. Then when I watched the movie for the first time it was amazing to see some of the locations ... for real! And it was like I had visited those areas before!

After ScummVM's support and GOG's release, there will be an Enhanced remustard KEX version by Nightdive as well Razz

Quote:
"It's true that the original Blade Runner source code was lost," says Larry Kuperman, head of business development at Nightdive. "We painstakingly reverse-engineered the code, importing it into our own KEX engine, a powerful tool that allows us to do console ports of classic titles, even in the face of quite challenging situations."

Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition will feature a "polished and premium restoration" from Nightdive Studios via the company's proprietary KEX game engine, which it has used to restore Turok and System Shock for contemporary platforms, among other titles. The game will feature updated character models, animations and cutscenes, as well as widescreen resolution support, keyboard and controller customization and more. The original foreign language translations (which include German, French, Italian and Chinese) of the original game have also been sourced for the Enhanced Edition.

Been a very long time since I played this.. can't say I like the 'upscaling' though, makes it looks like a terrible emulated copy with that awful upscale filter.

As memory serves, it was a competent enough click to solve adventure game, so I'll probably give it another go... but I think the world needs a proper Blade Runner game - perhaps some open world goo.. oh, I suppose Cyberpunk is near enough for now...

One would think that they would get all their ducks in a row, so to speak, with regards to getting access to original assets/source-code needed to undertake a project such as this, BEFORE funding and undertaking the project in earnest.

Nightdive looks to be under some seriously amateurish management.
