Was playing DOW2 with a friend last night and the damn system crashed on me twice. 3rd time I happen to look over at my other monitor that holds all of my monitors and showed my 5850 hitting near 90c.put a fan on it to cool it down for the time being, took it apart tody and the thermal paste on it was scarce. I've had this thing less than a year, NEVER had that issue with a cards thermal paste.

Taking these cards apart is like damn surgery too lol.

None the less I put some AC5 on it and it's maxing at like 72c now under full load but still strage that I had to replace it so soon.

Thermal paste are put on by machines, perhaps there was an air bubble in the feeding tube that put less than the necessary amount on the GPU. I tend to put AS5 on everything when I buy it anyway to make sure I have a good heat transfer between the chip and the sink to make sure I can overclock to it's potential.

Not saying you can't improve cooling but the cards won't shut down like that until 115c or some such, 90 up to even a 100 is manageable but it is a bit hot though some titles stress the card differently.
(Tried disabling AA to reduce workload?, also not forcing AA or such special modes from CCC?)

(I use a fan profile via CCC myself but the card is a non-reference one and very quiet so I use 50% fan speed for idle and 75% for when it's working, better than the 20% idle and then slow scaling to 60 - 70% the default tends to do and far cooler.)

Never had that with my 5870, and that's still in use. To be honest, your card runs very hot as it is, or are you talking about Furmark load? Because mine never got above 65 with any gaming load.

The default solution isn't all that good from what I know compared to more premium pastes though that sort of difference seems a bit too much for just that change, perhaps dust issue as well or it wasn't applied or seated properly to begin with.
(Those pad things can't be all too good either but are needed for it to have proper contact and such, full copper instead of aluminium might also help but cost reasons interfere, otherwise we'd probably see quite good default cooling as is although ATI has improved things with the 5000 series from what I've read.)

Well my 5870 is running hotter than it should as well. I posted something like that some time ago. Right now it idles at 60 and easily goes all the way to 85+ on heavy loads. If I disable dual monitors, it would go down to around 50 on idle.

I am not too bothered right now, but I might consider taking it apart and having a look one day, since this seemed to help you. I do have some AC-MX2 lying around anyway.

wow idle 60, id be fed up if it was my card, 40 41 idle here on the 4870 card, thats a big step to 20c temp for my liking.. I cleaned mine out today as you do, was going to take off the back x plate and stuff to get further in to clean but I decided not to, just my luck something would pop off and I would have no way to put it back together and replace any paste or something right now.

60 on idle is rather high but 85 on heavy loads (like Furmark) sounds normal.

Keep in mind the backplate screws are an oddball size. It's a #00 philips.

@ Mindermast: have you checked your clocks? I circumvented Powerplay, and mine idled at between 35 and 40 degrees. Also check my load temps in here, I never got to your temps Neutral

Well as I said, I am aware that the card is running hotter than it should. It's a shame I don't have any clue as to what were the temps the day I got it. Might be just dust clogging up.

As I have mentioned before, the card is running at higher clocks (400/1200) because of the dual monitor setup - this raises the temps by about 10 degrees on idle. It's still too high without that though. So the clocks by themselves are not the issue.

@SpykeZ
Yeah, I have noticed. I tried to make a quick pass to see if it's easy to get the thing disassembled and encountered a problem. The 5870 has 3 different small screws at the leading edge one of which is pretty tough to unscrew (I have noticed some others had issues with this one as well). What's worse, I think I botched it and damaged the screw too much, might not be possible to get it out by ordinary means anymore Smile
Don't really want to spend too much time on it at the moment, but I might need to figure something out some day...

For the time being, I'll try to do some heavy cleaning in there to see where that gets me Smile

Edit: Checked the temps with a single monitor setup - 42 C at 21% fan speed, so it's a 20 degree difference in fact.

Yeah I'd check for dust.

To get around the high clocks: just force lower clocks? I think I had mine running at 300/900, can't remember

Got the same shit with my GTX 460 now, it won't clock down at all without Afterburner doing it for me, but then I can't reach the insanely low clocks it's supposed to sit at in 2D, so I'm at 405/675 in 2D Sad

Do you have multiple monitors Mortibus? My guess is that you don't, meaning your 460 downclocks properly. All modern graphics cards do, but neither NVIDIA nor AMD manage to do it with multiple monitors.

Ati cards clocked down all the way at launch date I think, but then there were issues (crashes/hanging) with too low clocks and multiple monitors. The memory clock was the main thing if I recall correctly, so they bumped it up.

I can get the memory clock as low as 600 manually. Same for the core, but the automatic downclock brings the value to 400, so there's no need for modifying this. Changing to 600 mem clock would probably lower the temps by 10 C or so, not really worth the hassle of dealing with auto-profiles along with manual ones for me. So I'll stick with what I have for now, at least it'll keep me warm at night Smile
