I am about to purchase a laptop. I am looking to buy between Lenovo Ideapad and Dell XPS. It seems that Dell has more features on their laptop but I also read that they had some hardware problems in the past. Lenovo Ideapad doesn't boast more features as the Dell XPS but they seem to have a good steady reputation for building quality laptops. What would your suggestions be between Lenovo and Dell?

I got a dell a couple of years ago as part of a free mobile internet deal.
If I can offer any advice its stay away from Dell and there shite.
within 6 months, I had to get a memory replacement from them, a new power supply, it had 4 dead pixals on arrival (dell will only replace on the base cover with 6 + ) and one of the plastic bits from the USB port fell out.
This notebook was used maybe once a week when I was out.
my advice get a sex change operation before considering dell, there is a reason why they can offer so much shit at a crap price, and thats because its all shit quality.

I have had DELL laptop for three and a half years, and have had no technical problems with it. The only annoyance was that it is capped to 2GB RAM artificially in the BIOS, while the motherboard technically supports 4GB RAM max. But this is not an issue with DELL alone, so wouldn't take that as a criticism per-se.
I do think Lenovo laptops have a better chassis, but that is unimportant to me. If you can get a better specced DELL machine, I'd go with that, rather than a prettier crap.

I bought recently Lenovo Y560 and I'm loving it.
I also bought for two of my cousins in Poland a Dell Laptop and it was 4-5 years ago and they are stll running flawlessly without needing any kind of repair

I can only offer my experience, but as I said for me the only Dell notebook I have used in recent years and it was a pile of shite (inspiron 15 series (1545)
It was a decent spec too (same complaint as above though, it came with 4gig and had a hard limit imposed of 4gig)
The hard disk was nice though, that was 500gig and its in my PS3 now

One of the Lenovo Ideapads comes with a 500GB 5400 rpm plus a 32GB SSD. Is it worth it to have a 500GB 7200 rpm instead?

The SSD will be faster to boot and load the few applications you fit onto that 32GB
On Dell versus Lenovo: Lenovo are the kings of build quality, at least the one's I've seen and used. I haven't used an Ideapad, but I assume they're just as awesome as Thinkpads, I can crack your head open with one of those before it breaks
Dell aren't bad, and I can't say I've ever seen one fail, but I'd still opt for the Lenovo. I've extensively used the XPS's of a few years ago, and I didn't care for the "added" features of them at all. I think Leo misunderstood you, because he's definitely referring to a business laptop, which the XPS series isn't

Is it advisable to have a 500GB HDD @5400 rpm with 32GB SSD or should just go with the 500GB HDD @7200 rpm with no SSD? This laptop will mostly bu sed for school work, games and movies.

Hell with dell, cheapest pieces of crap on the market. The build quality of lenovo's is better than any other laptop out there today and comes with the least load of bloatware.
I wouldn't worry about the HD speed, faster HD = more power = drain battery faster. My buddy games on his 5400rpm and it just takes a lil longer to load.

Are you guys sure about the Ideapads? I thought they were a lot cheaper built then the Thinkpads and should not be compared to those.
From what I know there are two notebook lineups at the moment that qualify as "built like a tank": Lenovo Thinkpad and HP Elitebook.
But on the other hand, I used a Dell for two years and had no issues with it (apart from a broken GeForce 8400M, but that's nVidia's fault). Rugged notebooks cost a fortune and maybe a Dell would be enough for your needs while being 60% cheaper.
