|
 |
Ok so a friend of mine FINALLY got a mic to play L4D2 and chat with us. Issue is, her internet always wigs out.
Her room is unfortunately in a spot where wireless was the easiest way to go and we couldn't find a PCI adapter that had windows 7 support, so she got some USB adapter from linksys.
Now we use skype to play online because for whatever reason, valve is under the impression that we all use headphones and want sound and voice to come out of the same speakers instead of me wanting voices to come out of the my ear piece only. It seems fine when she uses VOIP on steam but on skype it keeps disconnecting her and the adapter gets really hot, so she lags hardcore and then her connection will drop.
I'm assuming it's the wireless adapter being a jerk cause she's using an AMD X2 6000+, 4GB of memory and a 250GTS and another guy we play with is only using a system built around a P4 but skype + games works fabulous on his system but he's on wired net.
Is that stupid USB adapter the cause of the issue? She noticed it gets really hot during play which seems to be when she starts getting disconnected.

Yeah, most USB adapters are terrible for anything more than basic browsing
Many PCI adapters may not advertise as being Windows 7 compatible, but they usually are, Microsoft supports a ridiculous amount of hardware out of the box. If it works with Vista, it sure as hell will with 7. If there are XP drivers, there's a very good chance there will be 7 drivers as well; Windows Update usually fetches them. Even the most basic crappy shit is supported in 7, I've put a Sitecom thing in my sister-in-law's PC. That thing was made for XP, with Vista drivers released later, and it still has Win98 drivers on the disk - that's how old it is, and it just works out of the box

unfortunately the PCI one she had didn't work like that :\ was a wireless b one.
I did however get talking to my friend and apparently skype uses a thing called supernode and gave me a registry fix for it
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=skype+supernode
had no idea skype was doing that
its unfortunate too cause I don't know a program thats as simple and good as skype either. steams voip sucks, ventrillo is a pain in the ass for a simple chat program, google talk doesn't even recognize my x360 gamepad as a mic like every other program does.

Should really just spend 10 bucks on a better wifi solution to be honest, because she's probably only getting like 15% of her full signal strength. If she's on a G network, ask her to check what Windows reports as speed. Chances are that it's just 11 mbps, which means it switched back to wireless-B
Anyway, ever tried Mumble? Loads of places to get free servers with like 5-10 slots. The interface sucks balls, but if you get a server that's not gimped shitless, its quality is almost as good as Skype thanks to Speex (Skype uses a derivative of that last I checked). The program itself is very lightweight though

You could try TeamSpeak. It has built-in IM as well.

She actually gets full signal if only missing 1 bar, downloads at her max internet speed as well. As for the setup ya I could have done better but it'd involve running close to 100 ft of cable lol. I did however find a phone jack in her room (uses dsl) so im going to see if I can't get the modem to run off of it.
