A new edition of the Macbook Air has been released, and I think it's absolutely beautiful!
See for yourselves at http://www.apple.com/macbookair/
Please don't spam this topic with Apple bashing -- I know many of you are allergic to Apple hardware.

Shame it's still overpriced.
I'll shoot myself the day I buy an Apple product at their obscene prices. Especially not because there is no way for a developer to legally test apps on OS X without owning one.
Spoiler: | Good stuff when you're doing a graduation project that involves some socket programming and needs a platformspecific GUI, both of which definitely need to be tested on a Mac. It's fine though, even though I have a laptop which is almost identical to this piece of shit, and a desktop PC that's really identical to the fastest 27" iMac bar the videocard (460 vs 5750), there is no way for me to legally test an application on OS X without buying this thing or one of the better models starting at €999.
But oh wait, surely they have some student programme right? I mean, Linux is free, MS have MSDN AA, and Borland/Adobe/Autodesk all have super cheap fully enabled versions of their software.
Oh yeah sure they do, knocking that €999 down to only €938!
Fucking die please, jerkoffs. |
Don't get me wrong, I've got OS X running on my laptop, and it's a fine OS; the actual systems are quite well built too, but still they don't justify their price nor the goddamn limitations Apple put on them. I still really don't see what gets all the Mac zealots so horny about these things.

Prices seem alright to me. Expensive, but nothing extreme. €999 for the 11" version, and €1299 for the 13". Ultra thin and compact design with flash memory, I like that.
Yes you pay a lot more than for a standard Windows notebook. But I'm willing to shell out the extra cash because I really like it. Don't know really why, I just do

You pay a bit more and you get a standard Windows notebook WITH an i7 quad-core CPU, decent GPU and upgradeable memory.

And you can install Mac OS X on it no problems, if you insist on using that OS.

At home I prefer a nice big gaming PC but for laptops and notebooks, macbooks pretty much own. Who the hell plays games on a laptop? Theyre used mostly for school and work. And that Macbook Air looks fucking sexyyyy
portability & battery life > framerate

Mac OS is designed for Apple hardware. Which is the idea behind all Apple hardware and official software. All are manufactured by the same company. Which means no compatibility and driver headaches that are typical of Windows computers. Of course you COULD choose to use third party software and other non official gadgets, which in theory could cause compatibility issues. But I think that's mostly the case for cheaper and more obscure stuff.
Running Mac OS on non Apple hardware would probably be a terrible experience indeed. So I would use Mac OS on a Mac, or not at all.

I only have a system update every month or so. Installs itself when the system is switched off... never a problem.

You can play all games on a MacBook, except the ones from recent years. That's a hell of a lot of stuff. And if you really do want to play the latest games just get a desktop pc. Which would still probably cost less than a Mac.

See, this is where the general Mac user fails miserably, just like you do.
- Current Macs run on normal Intel Core i platforms; hence, OS X runs fine on those CPUs.
- Current Macs have ATI, NVIDIA and until not too long ago, some Intel graphics cards as well as well. Kexts are widely available for NVIDIA and ATI, hence, OS X runs fine again.
- Curr...do I really need to go on?
The *only* part of a Mac that is NOT standard is the fact that Apple uses EFI, a replacement for the good old BIOS (initially) developed by Intel. This is also why it takes a bit of work to get OS X going on a 'normal' PC, since the EFI presence has to be faked.
What you MEANT to say was that Apple only support running OS X on the 3-4 different configurations they sell themselves. The hardware itself is absolutely nothing special. My desktop PC is (as I wrote above) identical to the current 27" iMac, except that it uses a GTX 460 instead of a 5750; the GTX 460 is supported fine though, kexts (drivers) available from NVIDIA themselves as well as from Apple. Same goes for my laptop, except that runs a GMA 4500 which is not supported by Apple.
Apple don't manufacture jackshit. They don't make the drivers themselves either: all the hardware in your Mac is supported by drivers made by the manufacturers. And yes, you do have drivers, any O/S has them. Apple calls them kernel extensions (kexts), MS call them drivers, same shit.
PowerPC Macs were different, but those days are long gone.

Yeah you could argue that the EFI is the only original Apple part in a Mac. What I personally like about Macs is that they just work perfectly and there isn't any messing about with drivers and hardware. And that's the reason I like my Mac more than my PC. And I just like the way the Apple brand is established.
I used to hate Macs myself, but since I've been using one for myself I have come to the conclusion that I was wrong about Macs. I'm sure there are still reasons to hate Macs, but those don't mean much to me.

Doesn't matter where the topic exists, you're going to get idiots who will shit in every mac thread on this forum. I hate macs, I hate apple even more, so you know what I do? I stay the fuck out of their hardware/product discussions for the fact I have nothing constructive to post, which is why most of the idiots above are 'causing a shit storm because what you spend your money on is their business.
I hate Intel as much as I do Apple, they do business the same way, know what I do? I don't post in intel threads, same with nvidia, I dislike them just as much, so I simply don't post in those threads.
It's sad people think their opinion matters to the point where they have to turn troll in every thread possible to get attention, which is why I don't post much here other than spam in the void or the odd general chat thread. You want to post with real hardware enthusiest, PC or Mac, join up at overclock.net, the members there actually have a clue what they're talking about.
Take these trolls with a grain of salt.

Erm, nope. Developed by Intel, and 'endorsed' by AMI, Phoenix, IBM for example. And both Apple and Microsoft. And it's not a 'part', it's a piece of firmware that is loaded onto the motherboard instead of the BIOS (it was developed as a replacement for that).

What exactly have I said that I'm not correct about then? Fact is, OS X was *bought* by Apple. Fact is, since Apple went Intel, the systems are no different from 'normal' PC's.
I may have gone overboard a bit, but as a software developer who now has to develop for OS X, I'm really pissed off that I can't (legally) test my shit on what essentially is just one of many UNIX O/S's, without having to spend at least a goddamn grand on hardware I've already got. Apple thread number 932934 seems like a good place to vent my frustration.
Apple can boast all they want, but the only iMac that comes close to my current desktop costs 90% more. With the MBA it's a bit less, but still 50% extra on what my laptop would've cost. "Ideal for students" (part of their advertising here in NL) my ass.
Oh, and while you say "people think their opinion matters", most Mac users do the same stuff just like NVIDIA/ATI fanboys do it to each other. Most Mac users fail to be able to give some substantial argument as to why their system is worth paying so much more for.

Wasn't referring to you bud, was too lazy to edit out your quotes. You're not the one acting like a child. I'm referring to the one that's crying in other threads about people calling nvidia users nvidiots while he's in here doing the same thing to mac users.

Hating on companies is really silly if you think about it. We all do it, but they are a company, that's what they do - they want more moneyz. Who is to blame (and really hate) are idiot users who are willing to throw cash. This is true for hardware, games, etc. If they had no market, prices would go way down.

The high prices of macs ARE their appeal. Apple sells computers like fashion.
Owning an iMac is like saying "Look at me bitch, I'm so rich I can afford to pay much more money for the same hardware. See the Apple logo? That's my proof how awesome I am".

You gotta hand it to Steve though, dude knows how to market his shit lol. He could come out with a dog turd on a stick saying it's the new gadget of the century and people would buy it like it was going to save the earth lol. Everyone would be walking around with shit on a stick with no idea why they bought but other than Steve said it was awesome lol.
