Simple question, right?
I've been talking to some people lately and most of the seem to agree that 3D just sucks.
And I don't get why?
I understand that for some people the glasses are a hassle and that it's stupid and useless when the movie goes IN YOUR FACE! for two hours straight.
But why does it suck? I don't get it. Then again, haven't seen that many movies in 3D yet.

btw.
Fuck you George Lucas. Re-releasing Star Wars in 3D? On a one movie per year basis starting in 2012? So that by 2017 you can sell us the Star Wars 3D (random optical or whatever type medium) version?
I remember back in the days when Lucas used to make movies...

Does 3D suck? No. Do 3D movies suck when the effects are gimmicky for 3D? Yes. Do 3D movies which were originally shot in 2D suck? You bet your ass. Avatar had good 3D, but unfortunately the movie itself sucked. But it certainly wasn't the 3D's fault. Until you start seeing proper and mature films adopt 3D technology, 3D will be little more than a gimmick. And even if Batman 3 is in 3D, you will love the movie not because it's in 3D, but because the movie's plot is good. 3D should only enhance the experience. Smile

The best 3D movies are the ones that use the 3D effect for depth, rather than "in your face!" nonsense. Avatar 3D, for instance, is absolutely mind blowing. Whereas Resident Evil 3D is vomit inducing. At least with Avatar, you have a wonderful feeling of depth, like you can see through the screen and into that vision ... with shit like Resident Evil, all you get is cheesy "action" shots where some douche nozzle throws something through the screen.

It's crap.

Well.. He only made three movies before ruining the Star Wars franchise:

1999 Star wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace

1977 Star Wars

1973 American Graffiti

1971 THX 1138

He's still living off Star Wars (and all that comes with the franchise) even though he nearly destroyed it with the new trilogy. He hasn't made/directed a good movie since the original Star Wars movie (he didn't do the sequels).

well, 3d isn't really inherently shit - it's just that it's unnecessary for almost every occation
closest i can think of would be stereo sound versus surround sound - except you would have to wear headphones for it
so if they get the technology going without fucking glasses, then yea, there's really no reason anyone would say it would suck
and i doubt we'll be seeing that in theatres any time soon.. there's still some technology to be invented to allow that

one thing i was surprised by was that a huge number of the population has stereoscopic blindness
something like 20%
so those people would be forced to wear glasses for absolutely no benefit, other than to not see a blinking distorted image

personally i still rather see a film in HD than 3D
i only have a stereo sound system, too

3D is used as a gimmick. but movies like pirhana use it just for the gimmick and it's cheap fun.
Avatar, pixar movies, some decent dreamworks movies use 3D for DoF.

When i saw the trailer for pirhana 3D. When rhames used the weed whacker for 3D effect. It was awesome fun.

I don't like 3D, at least not the technology they are using atm. I am not getting headaches, but I find the screen is too dark through the lenses, and colours are not so vivid.
I'd rather watch the movie in a good 2D version (IMAX, or HD at home), than 3D in cinema...

The thing I don't like with 3D is the fact they darken the image quite a bit. You get that deep looks, but besides that I stil prefer to watch movies in 2D...

I agree with most people, it will be better when the technology advances some more. Did anyone else also feel like fast movements were incredibly blurred with 3d glasses? If it's a still shot everything is fine and dandy, but when something moved fast across the screen, or the camera moved, I could barely recoginze the object.

i think the biggest problem with 3d, is that the human eye wants to go where it wants to go, and look at whatever attracts it, but its still bound by what the directors WANTS you to see... its a pretty big distraction that ruins the impact of 3d a bit.

i also think thats part of the reason it looks blurry to you during fast action... your eye is probably trying to look at places the director doesnt want you to.

3d movies are awesome!! it's so cool and realistic when something hits you like an axe or something u just have to be there to experience it in full. and with avatar 3d just brought this mvie from shit to fuckin amazin. i mean you could actually feal and breathe pandora through that IMAX SCREEN and 3d. of course when seen a second time on my 22inch monitor it sucked ! but none one can take away that 1st viewing in IMAX 3d that was truly ET.
and with bloody valentine 3d man that was prety awesome too when the whole cinema jumps and ducks from glass , axes and stuff. it's great fun but of course if u'r a saddo u can't appreciate it.
too bad i missed piranha in 3d Sad

Finally people who agree with me Very Happy
Imo if 3D is used properly it can enhance a movie (ie Avatar - yes yes I know people think it sucked, I liked it).
It's just good to finally talk to people who don't go "OMG 3D! shit sucks so much! 3d needs to die!!!"
oh and the same folks go "Nintendo 3DS? Sooo awesoooome!"

@Reklis But there will always be people like that who go either "OMFG 3D SUCKS BALLZ AND ALWAYS WILLZ" or the opposite "OMFG 3D IS AMAZING BEST THING SINCE SLIZED BREADZ AND I LOVES IT MY PRECIOUS!11". Laughing The idea is to know not to pay too much attention to them. Wink

I know, I know. It's just the people that are hating on 3d like crazy lately are folks I talk to on a regular basis so this thread is more like a sanity check to see if I'm just totally crazy for actually thinking that 3D is a nice idea.

I watched Avatar in 3D in the cinema and in 2D at home, I didn't think 3D made the experience more enjoyable. For me, 3D adds absolutely nothing. It does not suck, but I also think it's noting special. I had a "hm, interesting" thought for ten minutes when watching Avatar, but it passed.

Ok we'll get IMAX in a month or so, and the first movie in 3D would probably be Harry Potter, but I'm reluctant to see it in 3D :\ The movie seems dark itself, and I can only wonder what the 3D will be like...

Color TV is overrated anyway, useful only when watching a football match. I can't tell the same about sound though Laughing

Exactly what I wanted to post too.
Unless they fix the technology 3D is a no for me. I only saw one modern 3D movie (Avatar) in the cinema and when I watched it again on BluRay I honestly thought it looked far better in 2D. The picture with the polarized glasses looked too dark and dull.
And in one scene I even noticed a lot of flickering due to the asynchronous pictures for the left and right eye.

3d is absolutely the future for me - watching a well done 3d movie (which are rare atm) gives me a new level of immersion in a movie - i wont even get into how awesome gaming in 3d is because for me that is a given. I used to do a fair amount of research with hallucinogens (yea whatever) and 3d is kinda the way to go if you want that level of immersion without drugs hahaha

overall, I will spend money on this technology, I already own a 3d projector and a 3d monitor and will be getting a 3d tv in the following few months -

I played some 3D games at Gamescom, and before that I thought it would be great, since games are much more suited for 3D than movies, just because the images are all artificial and can be rendered in 3D from the beginning.

But playing in 3D was way worse than watching a movie, I got a headache after only 5 minutes, which has never happened in the cinema before... And it was good hardware, like expensive TV and so on...
