The whole idea of Dragon Age was for it to be tactical RPG. You know, tactics, group combat, calculated hits and stuff. Mass Effect is supposed to be RPG with action combat.
Now, I doubt that DA2 will be in any way "tactical" RPG, but instead action one, regardless how much PR guys try to coat things up. In same was as Mass Effect series or Jade Empire.
Sure you will probably able to do something tactical. Heck... in ME2 you can order companions to use some power or to go somewhere, but that's still action RPG with few order options, not a sequel to spiritual "spiritual successor of BG".
Now, I do like action RPGs, but there is really too big drought on tactical RPGs, so "sellout" like this one stings too much. They pretty much changed "sub-genre" of the game, to cater to mass console market.
It's like hey... let's make next Civilization a RTS. They'll more popular and will earn more money. But, but it's still a civ, it will have units, towns, technology. yes... all is the same really. Nothing to worry here.
Don't bother replying to him, he's been permanently removed from the site for editing posts after the fact and then saying I don't understand what he wrote in said edited post.
Trolls like that are swiftly removed.
Bit harsh, no? I don't think he was being deliberately trollish... just more than a little naive for thinking Biowere hadn't sold out and that DA2 really will be a "deep and engrossing BG successor"

Look at the post I replied to, note when I replied, note when it was edited, note the time of the reply to my post.
I did and I'm not disputing that, I just thought a perma-ban may have been a bit harsh for a first "offence" sort of thing. But hey, what do I know? I think I've surpassed Leo *and* Spidey on their bans combined now
I don't know, I haven't played DAO on console, but to me this DA2 gameplay video looks more or less the same as I seen on videos of console version DAO apart from action being a little bit more dynamic.
What I really didn't like were environment details. I can't believe they would release DA2 in 6 months or so if it's the current state of game what they shown in the video. It looks like alpha version, UI and character selection is clearly a placeholder, environment looks bland and there are no objects in the world. In short, game looks far from being complete and polished.
As for game itself I will wait till I play it on my PC before I can judge. After all DAO on console was very different than on PC. I am little more open minded than most of the guys here an I can accept game studios are trying to cater wider audience and thus make more money. It's a business after all. Although if they "dumb down" combat and remove the system that was in Dragon Age I will be disappointed as well.
If it becomes another hack'n'slash action like God of War, Darksiders, Castlevania LoS or other games then it's all fine, I like those as well. But they shouldn't call it Dragon Age, if they really change the game that much.
I swear, they shoulda just added martial arts and called this Jade Empire 2 :/. You guys remember how JE felt like an obvious console port? How much you wanna bet thats gonna be the same with DA2.
so theyre changing shit up a bit... like they did with ME2... who knows... you might actually end up LIKING it. so maybe wait and see before you get too upset, eh?

I did not like the changes to me2, besides the better "shotting" gameplay itself. They dummbed down ME2 big time, including the story.
I agree with the rest, but not the story part. ME2 had, in my opinion, an amazing story that really felt like it was the "center" of a trilogy, not to mention it was thoroughly well made and the suicide mission was magnificent.
I always liked Bioware characters and loved Bioware's attention to detail when creating a background story/info. They aren't very good in creating interesting stories though, Bioware never was. Just my opinion of course, but their latest games (DA and ME) weren't really special in teh story department.

You really have something with Bioware stories no ?

Mass Effect and Dragon Age have one of the best stories in my opinion :/
point i was trying to make before with me2 was that me1 was not a perfect game, and it NEEDED changing... yes they went a bit too far with me2, but if they lean back a bit towards me1 for the third game, they could very well hit the sweet spot and create an amazing game.
all im saying is that dragon age was not a perfect game. it NEEDS changing. will they go TOO far in da2? maybe... point i was trying to make was that overreacting is silly.. give it a chance... it could still be a good game - whats important is that atleast theyre doing something a bit different with the sequel to a game that NEEDED something different done to it.
Improving the combat and graphics and so on sure but changing the combat completely.. Why? It's supposed to fucking be the spiritual successor of BG not some god damn Drynasty Wage: Origins.
what needs changing? for me, i dunno... everything? clearly for most of you guys it was a golden gift from the gods, a shining example of gaming or something.
for me, it was quite... well not crap... or boring... it just wasnt memorable. it didnt stand out for me in any real way. when i look back over my past 12 months of gaming, dragon age doesnt stand out.
dont get me wrong, it was fun to play, but id give it a 7/10... so yeah... if a game doesnt leave an impression on me, then im quite happy for it to change things up and try something new, rather than just repeating the same shit again and giving me the same 'yeah... its ok i guess...' experience.
it MIGHT be crap. it MIGHT be. but from my point, im not going to automatically write it off just because its trying something new given that the first game didnt set my world on fire.
Wanted to post it here originally, but accidentally posted it in DAO thread instead. So here it goes:

Would you say then that the combat has changed to a more real-time format, or is it still very much a covert turn-based system? What camp would you say the combat in Dragon Age II falls into?
The early impressions people have of the Dragon Age II combat is that they almost don’t know what to make of it, and I think I understand why. It’s because the visual presentation of the combat has been completely reworked. I liked the Dragon Age: Origins combat in the sense that it makes you think like a general. You have a tactical team of four, you could coordinate their attacks, manoeuvre them and do positioning. All of those elements were really affective in making you feel like you’re not just controlling one character, but you’re controlling a coordinated team. Increasingly that seems to be less and less common in RPGs, so that was key for us to hold onto.
And does this mean that there is still a great deal of micromanagement and tactical thought in combat?
There’s also a camp of people that love the idea of pausing the game and issuing orders. So all of that ability is there in Dragon Age II, none of that has changed. However, the visuals have changed dramatically.
Characters no longer move forward into positions then line themselves up to take their swing and fireballs don’t take like ten seconds of finger waggling to launch. Everything has been made much faster and much more responsive, so that as a player I can count on my team actually executing my orders quickly, efficiently and even more importantly, stylishly.
turn-based and/or tactical fights in rpg's end with Neverwinter Nights 2. newer rpg's are more or less action fights crap. doing a pause during fights dont make games and fights tactical. Dragon Age is not a tactical combat rpg. its just a game which would like to be remembered and compared to Baldurs Gate 2 but its hard to find many similarities. its hard to believe that dragons age 2 will be "back to origin" r-p game. it will be another more-arcade-than-it-should-be rpg game. but it is our choice to play it or install classic role playing games once again
What are you talikng about? I used the pause funcion in almost every major fight in DA. Sure you can "click-click-click", but the same could be done in say Baldur's Gate.
As for DA2, I still can't figure out the combat. Some say it'll be completely action oriented while others say it'll be DA's combat without isometric view. I guess we'll see the end result when the game is out.

Wow. Just fucking, wow. I was with him until that last part. "more importantly, stylishly" ???? Really, stylishly is what he considers to be more important? fuck me, this game is doomed.

Well from context it looks that from quick, efficient and stylish he considers the most important stylish.
