I've been playing MMO's for over 10 years (ever since the original Everquest released). I've either actively played, or at least tried, every western MMO since then. Not once have I had my account unlawfully accessed - until last night.

I got 3 emails while I was asleep saying that a character on my inactive Warhammer Online account was being transferred, and the password to my EA/Mythic Master Account has been changed.

I opened Firefox and jumped over to the account management page (never click the links in the spoof emails like all those poor WoW saps). Sure enough, they did change it.

So my question to you is this - how the flying fuck did they manage to bruteforce a 14+ character password that was a combination of letters/numbers? Keyloggers are out of the question as I have not logged in to that account for over a year and a half. The odds of that are fucking astronomical.

I used to laugh at all those poor fuckers that got their accounts accessed....now I'm a little humbled. I could give a shit about what they may have stolen (I no longer play it), but the very fact that they managed to access it kind of unnerved me. Not to mention the fact that EA support is completely fuck useless. Talked to the bitch for 15 minutes and she couldn't give me a straight answer as to whether they (the other party) could have had any access to the old credit card that was on file (or was it? she didn't know) on the account.

Sigh....

damn dude that's kind of scary... on a lighter note if it's been a year and a half since you used it maybe it took them that long to brute their way in Razz

seriously though that is kinda fucked.

You have seen the movie Fight club? Cool Face
On a more serious note besides phishing and keyloggers, accounts also get compromised since some people share their password with others.

Heheheh... great movie btw.

Although that might have seemed more plausible if he was actually letting the game consume all of his time or something.

I don't click any MMO account email links, I didn't have a keylogger, and I sure as fuck have never shared any of my passwords with a single soul.

The fight club reference is lost on me though - haven't seen it in so long. All I remember is - The first rule of fight club is don't talk about fight club.

Do you use the same password with other stuff.

If you do it could have become compromised elsewhere

I use variations of it, but always make sure to change it up a bit.

QUICK! Change your passwords everywhere!

Already did, and it was a major pain in the ass - no doubt to get worse in the coming weeks as I try to make the new ones second nature

Could it be a sql attack?

I honestly think it's something on Mythic's side of the fence. Looked into it a bit and apparently this is a very common problem that started about a month or two ago. Seems they somehow target inactive accounts.

In case some people here haven't seen the movie, a spoiler.
