Popping one of these badboys in.

Should be nice to host all my shiznit and a couple games at a time.
Great price on these justnow too.

Grats Smile

Still a lot of money though, 141 quid for a drive that's nowhere near as fast as the current Sandforce drives :/

It's not as fast but it's a hell of alot cheaper than a sandforce drive of that capacity.
And as a gamer..i wouldn't see any benefit from a faster drive, difference between the two would only be shown in the form of some numbers in a benchmark.
So sandforce for alot more would be kind of pointless.
Maybe faster installs with improved random write speeds, but other than that the extra cash would buy me nothing i feel.

Was considering the much faster and a little cheaper crucial real ssd 64gb (on sandforce controller) for £112 but i think the capacity will be of more benefit to myself.
I want at least 2 games on it at any given time Smile

The prices have come down a treat over the last while, more people are jumping on the ssd boot drive bandwagon.
If you ever use one...you wont want a normal hdd for a boot drive ever again.

£192.68 for the same capacity sandforce drive Sad
And i will be paying £130 for the vertex coz i'm just clever like that..free delivery too.

That's where you're wrong. The Sandforce drives (and the Crucial C300 for that matter) are much better at small random read and write operations. Guess what happens when you load Windows? That's right, a ridiculous amount of small random operations. Loading a game is a mixture, but even there the higher random write/read speeds basically cut loading times in half Smile

There's a reason I've been saying SSD's are only an investment to do if you really have got money to spare. Realistically speaking, you either get a relatively slow drive with a lot of capacity, or vice versa. Either way, in 6 months time NAND prices should have dropped enough for SSD's to drop well below the $1.5/GB with the speeds the SF-1200 is getting, meaning it's a waste of money for anyone who actually has to care about what he spends his on Smile

Edit: I'm not saying it's a bad product or bad buy btw, it's just that these things are developing WAY too fast. There hasn't been such fast development in PC hardware since the first 3D cards, and buying one now is a big investment that always comes with tradeoffs, just like the first 3D accelerators had their issues. I personally don't want to spend 150 euros on a drive that's gonna be hard to sell in 6 months, when I want to get a faster, bigger drive for the same amount I'm spending now. Even videocards are not improving anywhere near as fast as SSD's have over the past year Smile

You are wrong.
Actual load times will not be cut anywhere near in half from using a sandforce drive over last gen.
Talking a couple seconds at best in games etc.
And in other things, well they load as fast as you can click em so you can't really do better no matter how much faster the drive is.

Current drives also require sata 6gb/sec just to make those couple seconds gains too.
SO you are talking about a new card or a new motherboard alongside the drive.

It doesn't for the Vertex, no, but OCZ still are the ones pushing this next to Intel. Both their controller designs for the Vertex and Vertex 2 were very good at what they do, but I'm more looking at SSDs in general. It also differs per game obviously, but Crucial have proven that by good design you can shave off 5 seconds on a 25 second load time. Same goes for boot times, and I'm not going by reviews here. Check some user experiences, you'll see that people who went even from Vertex to Vertex 2 do notice a speedup in boot times; that's cuz it's on systems that are dirtier than what's considered dirty in reviews.

Oh, and newer drives don't require SATA3. They support it, as in they won't mind being put on SATA3, but they run on SATA2 just fine. In fact, the only drive I can think of right now that actually ventures into SATA3 territory is Crucial's C300, and that's only barely more than SATA2 supports (top of my head it's at 330-335).

Which leads straight back to my point..
Buying a faster drive for alot more cash would be fairly useless, as the difference is so small.

Boot times are the most unimportant thing i can think off.
Not that they wont be alot faster on the vertex over normal hdd. they will.

GPU upgrade next.
Think i'll wait for some more models to hit the shops.
Just sold a GTX280 for £120

Single card will do a few months.
In two minds if i should sell the second 280 or keep it as a backup GPU.
Or on the rare occasion... slap it in as a physx card....

Keep it as a PhysX card/backup GPU. It's just gonna lose its worth more and more with the GTS 450 and AMD's entire HD6 series coming. I'm quite surprised you even managed to sell the other one for 120 Smile

What exactly did you buy the SSD for if not for the boot time and application loading time?

I bought it for those things. (not so much boot times but they will be fast as on the vertex)

Will make my rig feel that much more high end.

apps will load just as fast as you can click them with these drives.
A faster drive would make no difference. like i explained a few times over already.

@Mortibus.. Nice one dude, there is one born every second.

Good for you! SSDs are amazing, no more constant hard drive scratching, and everything loads so fast its awesome. I love mine, one of the best purchases I ever did.

Yeh, been waiting a while to get onboard with it.
Now my mate is using one and having had some hands on ...just pushed me that extra bit to jumping onboard with it.

Now i can pitty noobs with there mechanical boot drives Razz

I'm just waiting for prices per single MB to cool off a bit significantly. I simply crave for 1-2TB SSDs affordable at pocket money. Cool Face

Nah, I kid. I'm not of the waiting type. When prices drop down, I'll just grab one without a flying care in the world that a more advanced storage technology has surfaced out. Smile
