|

My fiancee is connecting via her wireless router to the internet. Strangely I am not sure how this exactly works.
She has a wireless connection and sometimes when she can't access the internet and she says ipconfig in DOS the results are the following:
IP: 192.168.2.2
Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.2.1
Actually that should be the correct information and when she enters 192.168.2.1 in the browser she is able to access the routers settings page.
But when she has internet connection the data changes as following:
IP: 81.213.XXX.XXX
Subnetmask: 255.255.252.0
Gateway: 81.213.XXX.XXX
(gateway and IP are different )
But if I enter this gateway information in the browser I can't access the router.
Any ideas in what I can do? I wanted to change the port configuration and so on but I don't even understand how she access the net :/

That second configuration is a direct internet configuration. Both the IP and Gateway are internet IP's. Are you sure that in both situations she's connected to the correct SSID? It seems that in the second case she's either connected to a wireless modem directly (is hers wireless?) or someone elses (bad) wireless setup.

you must connect to internet with the first config
try to set obtain ip automaticly in the w lan properties and see if you connect
also if you have choose another wan as priority
in win 7 you choose protocol ip ver 4
and reset the router
what have you done pump?
what you mean change the port? router has his own ip you cant change it as far as i know
ports has nothing to do with the acces of the router from the explorer

Maybe that router has an option to go Modem mode? At any rate, this is not recommended at all, so you need to look in the options.

ok guys thanks with the help and I'm not sure what is actually happening here. As I said the first configuration SHOULD work but on her router the ADSL light always flashes (means trying to connect) and PPPoE is always off. Even when she has the second IP setting the router seems to try to connect.
I think it might be possible that there is just another wireless router somewhere around and she isn't even going only with her own router :/
@psychokillergr:
I want to change the port settings so that we can play against each other
So I must say to her router that requests over specific ports should be routed to her computer and not other devices in the network.

That is the second possibility! She has a software on her computer that manages the connection but it seems to be a big pos and the moment I try to access it the netmeeting connections gets interrupted :/
Is it possible that this is a normal wireless router but the software is bringing it into modem mode? Would it be possible for her than to access internet with her computer and mobile at the same time?

It shouldn't. That defeats the whole point of the router. There's a difference between a wireless router and wireless modem.
None of the routers I've owned over the years have shown that kind of behaviour |
That's her router:

So the router is connected to the ADSL line directly and the PC is connected to the router via WiFi?
Software cannot change router working mode no. To Windows, connecting to the WiFi router should be as simple as connecting (with or without protection, but preferably with) and getting an IP assigned through DHCP. Nothing more nothing less. The PC should not know what the internet connection is, or what the external IP and gateways are.
On the other hand, in the router's connection settings, you should check that everything is configured properly. I assume since this is ADSL that there is a username and password through some tunneling protocol (probably L2TP). Are the configured correctly? (If the router receives an external IP from the ISP, then it is connected properly.)

As I said sometimes when she connects to the router via wireless she has the said 192.168 .... configuration which should actually be the correct router settings!
But she can't access the internet then. It seems as if the router does not synchronize (blinking adsl light).
Only when the other settings with the static ip are active she is able to surf.

Has she configured the ADSL settings in the router? The router doesn't know how to connect to the ADSL without dialing settings and username/password.
When she connects directly, she probably has the settings stored on the PC so that's why it's working (in this case the router is merely a modem). But she has to put the settings in the router for it to know how to connect.
@garus But she already receives an IP. If she was out of the range, she would not have received any IP.

How? She can't access the router settings anymore when she is in the 81.213.... network :/
I should really consider checking the SSIDs :/

What you mean how? She should not be in 81 settings, she should always be in 192.168 (internal network IP).

Seems like a bridged connection.
The 192.168.2.2 configuration is static?
In that case check the DHCP pool of the router.
If it assigns IP addresses via DHCP from 192.168.2.2 - 192.168.2.254 you can't use a static IP address setup.
Most routers allow you to change the pool, change it to 10-254 or so then the 1st 9 addresses can be used as static.
Then that software on her laptop I would kick it off and try the basic driver for the wireless NIC and the Windows interface but this might bring you further away from home.

No her 81.213.XXX.XXX IP is static. And only when she is assigned that IP she is able to access the net.
When she has the 192.168.2.2 IP adress than she can access the router settings and stuff (this actually behaves like a router) but she cant access the internet.
Thing is, it either the 81.213.xxx.xxx ip OR the 192.168.2.2

The 81.213.XXX.XXX IP is the external IP of the router most likely so it is in a bridged mode (or modem setup as Natan called it) setup.
There are software solutions to set this up (router must support it though) and IMO an option best not used.
And indeed accessing the router configuration is no longer possible this way.
Check the software on her laptop, check the router setup.

How is one IP assigned over the other? At random? One time she connects and she gets 192 and the other 81? That's very strange to be honest.

Quite strangely yes it seems to be random. Yesterday evening she couldn't go online because she was only connected to the router "only".
@iconized: Sounds interesting! Any idea how I could check out that a little bit more?

Can you tell her to take some screenshots of the router settings and software settings when she can?

Yeah but I don't remember the layout of the router page and she wouldn't know which page to capture for me if I don't tell her explicitly

As always if feel completely blind with these kind of problems over a distance, your fiancรฉe is in Turkey I guess?
That is not going to be easy, found a user manual in Turkish:
http://safemanuals.com/user-guide-instructions-owner-manual/AIRTIES/RT-205-_T
Maybe a start would be setting up a new wireless connection to this router but before you do that make sure you have all info needed to make this new connection:
- SSID
- used wireless security and key if applicable
- you already have local IP address, gateway from router, DNS server is gateway unless you want to use a specific DNS server (requires a static IP configuration)
And yes Natan's suggestion is maybe a better start.
Also most routers can be accessed externally these days, needs to be enabled in config router and best use a password for it.

Get on the phone with her and run the setup wizard from scratch, if the router has one?
Or like iconized says, enable the external access so you can log in and fix it, assuming the router itself gets internet access at some point

Will give it a try. I already configured the router properly when I was over there last time but she moved to another city and a friend of her father came over and reconfigured everything. OK at least she has 10mbit up and 10mbit down (thats faster than my net connection she had 0.5mbit before ) now But only a 3GB transfer volume per month

There is just one thing. If things should go wrong and she cant access the net anymore I'll be a dead man My darling can be pretty furious if that means that we can't have videotalk over skype/msn

With such a connection I'd be over the limit... before the dawn of the first day by just watching some youtube and gametrailers stuff.

They got silly limits in a lot of countries, Belgium as well. And a lot of ISPs in the UK still do
We've never had a limit here, and I've been on broadband since like 97 or 98. Wouldn't work for me either, this month alone (so that's 6 days) I've already downloaded 28 gigs
