Quote: | The callous souls over at AMD have decided that our little consumer brains aren't sophisticated enough to handle two awesome brands, so they're just axing the use of the ATI moniker from here on out. Product line names will be retained, with the Radeon and FirePro branding still intact, but ATI Eyefinity will now be known as AMD Eyefinity. |
So now we'll have Team Green vs... Team Green in the GPU market?

Seems logical. They don't have a partnership with Ati afaik, they simply bought it.

Hmm, it will take some time to get used to it.
I'll practise :
"AMD has shit drivers"
"AMD : The way it wasn't meant to be played"
"It crashes on startup ? Do you have an AMD card ?"
"Wait for new gamma drivers by AMD, the game has performance problems with those cards"
"PhysX option is greyed out ? Do you have an AMD card ?"

They'll still be using the Radeon brand though. Also makes sense, AMD is much more widely known than ATI, so from a marketing point of view this is only beneficial. People who do know the ATI brand will still be thinking of it as ATI anyway
Colour will still remain red for the record, only the integrated GPUs (AMD VISION) will have a strong green hint. Now if only AMD starts using red for all their stuff, NVIDIA starts making x86 CPUs like they want to, then we can have Red vs. Green vs. Blue on all fronts

its ironic considering the ATI brand was the only thing that saved the AMD brand from going bankrupt

Who gives a shit about teh brand? AMD was saved because Ati made great cards at the time.

Actually, no
They lost money 3 years straight, it was the last quarter of 2009 where they actually made a profit - and that was due to the settlement with Intel, which was like 95% of that profit. Besides that, AMD has made most of their revenue from the chipsets of the past 18-24 months; partially powered by former ATI tech, but not solely. AMD's future is looking very bright though, their upcoming Fusion APU will be a very strong competitor to Intel's Sandy Bridge, it will most likely be quite a bit faster in fact, and Sandy Bridge already is very, VERY fast for an integrated solution. That, and the fact that Cypress (HD58xx) and its offspring was the greatest GPU launch since NVIDIA's G80/G92, with the upcoming revisions matching the 5970 in performance with a single GPU makes things look good for AMD. Finally

Seen the preliminary benchmarks Epsilon? Unclear whether it's a 6870 or not (just 6800 series), but it just surpasses the 5970, quite an impressive leap forward from ATI again

Quote: | Over the weekend, member WG_Baby of Chinese language forum PCInLife made news by posting the first unconfirmed screenshots of Radeon HD 6800 Series performance benchmarks. In what would normally be considered a baseless rumor without empirical evidence, we found this forum post to contain enough verification to deem it plausible for discussion. Our good friend Lars-Göran Nilsson from SemiAccurate was able to speak with the creator behind the GPU-Z graphics information utility, who was able to confirm that the screenshots presented below appear to be the real deal.
Nevertheless, if the GPU managed to subscore X11634 on the first run, X11762 on the second run and P24056 on the third run with default clocks, this would seem to indicate that Cayman XT may become the fastest single-GPU card to launch on the market. The only exception in its path would be the Radeon HD 5970 dual-GPU, which will eventually be succeeded by Antilles XT.
Quote: | The accompanying GPU-Z 0.4.5 information reveals "6718" as the GPU ID, along with an 850MHz core clock and 1600MHz memory clock comprised of 256-bit GDDR5 with 204.8GB/s memory bandwidth. According to the Southern Islands codenames leaked in Catalyst 10.8 last week, the GPU ID matches as "233, Cayman XT (6718) NI." |
Additionally, the Unigine Heaven 2.1 benchmark test was run at 1920x1200 fullscreen resolution with 4x AA, 16x AF and Extreme Tessellation enabled. The results show that the Cayman XT gets 922 Scores with an average 36.6 frames per second. |
I KNEW it was worth waiting for the 6xx0-series.

Yeah, it's *really* worth it to buy a card like this.
Wait, why ?

So you can have 49 fps in Crysis instead of 46?

On a more serious note, wouldn't it become time that CPU and GPU manufacturers produce chips that consume less energy?

Well technically, they are for the most part. Intel and AMD/ATI's performance per watt goes up with every revision, the only exception to this as of late has been NVIDIA with the GF100 chips. That was a brandnew revision which didn't do much better than the previous one.
To give some hard numbers: A 5870 is slightly faster than a 4870x2, but does so with nearly 40% less power consumption (and as a result of that combined with a smaller die, 30-50% less heat as well). The same goes for a 480 compared to a 295, but there it's only a 5% win on power consumption, and temperatures actually went up.
NVIDIA has rectified that for a large part with the GTX 460 though, and ever since Fermi came out there has been a huge focus on power consumption, so I expect future parts from all these companies to try and keep consumption down as much as possible.
With CPUs you've got similar stories, although it's a bit more complicated in that field, since there is no single way to indicate performance. If you're up for a bit of a read, you should check out the Sandy Bridge preview on Anandtech as well. That's where the future lies, AMD has similar products lined up (Google for Llano, Bulldozer and you'll get plenty of hits). I think we might eventually get back to the point where graphics card are extensions onto onboard chips again (rather than being responsible for all of it), making the term "3D card" current :>

AMD Fusion is the collective name for AMDs on-chip GPU solution.
Still, this isn't interesting to any gamer really.
Btw, Intel moved the clock generator onto the CPU and locked it at 100Mhz (BCLK). If you want to overclock you'll have to buy the unlocked (and most likely more expensive) K-series.
Quote: | With Sandy Bridge, Intel integrated the clock generator, usually present on the motherboard, onto the 6-series chipset die. While BCLK is adjustable on current Core iX processors, with Sandy Bridge it’s mostly locked at 100MHz. There will be some wiggle room as far as I can tell, but it’s not going to be much. Overclocking, as we know it, is dead.
Well, not exactly.
Intel makes three concessions.
First and foremost we have the K-series parts. These will be fully unlocked, supporting multipliers up to 57x. Sandy Bridge should have more attractive K SKUs than what we’ve seen to date. The Core i7 2600 and 2500 will both be available as a K-edition. The former should be priced around $562 and the latter at $205 if we go off of current pricing.
Secondly, some regular Sandy Bridge processors will have partially unlocked multipliers. The idea is that you take your highest turbo multiplier, add a few more bins on top of that, and that’ll be your maximum multiplier. It gives some overclocking headroom, but not limitless. Intel is still working out the details for how far you can go with these partially unlocked parts, but I’ve chimed in with my opinion and hopefully we’ll see something reasonable come from the company. I am hopeful that these partially unlocked parts will have enough multipliers available to make for decent overclocks.
Finally, if you focus on multiplier-only overclocking you lose the ability to increase memory bandwidth as you increase CPU clock speed. The faster your CPU, the more data it needs and thus the faster your memory subsystem needs to be in order to scale well. As a result, on P67 motherboards you’ll be able to adjust your memory ratios to support up to DDR3-2133.
Personally, I’d love nothing more than for everything to ship unlocked. The realities of Intel’s business apparently prevent that, so we’re left with something that could either be a non-issue or just horrible. |
The SB i5 2400 IPC on the other hand has been improved a lot. Clock-for-clock it's a lot faster than the previous generation CPU it will replace (i5 760).
