As one guy pointed out, so far it's not been working for a year.
Also do you have an nVidia card now inatan?

*phew* At least it's just a driver glitch then. Hopefully nVidia fix that (and please give us some Crimson Skies HW support again!!!) in time for me getting my 460s.

I do. Prices were exactly the same, so I went with the better card for me. I think we discussed it once? Confused But yeah, it's not as bad as everyone made me think, especially coming from a 4870x2. Laughing

But wait, is all 16-bit color dithering? Because I can swear I ran Porsche Unleashed yesterday on 640x480x16. Scratch Head I'll test later again to see.

Yes. If I waited a little more I would have went with 460s, but eh...

But I'm such an idiot. I played NFS on the laptop, which has an ATI card, not on the main PC. Oh wow...

Did you get a 480 with the standard cooling solution or did you get something like the "Zotac Amp"?

No, only the standard. That is only what is sold here. And the special cooled 5870 cards are priced higher than a 480. It goes up to 75-80 when playing more demanding games, so it's on par with the 4870x2, while the cooling is actually a lot more silent then the vacuum cleaner cooler in the 4870x2.
But if an aftermarket cooler for the card pops up in shops here, I will probably purchase it just to be sure.

As far as I see it, those aftermarket solutions like the Zalman V3000F thats on the Amp is only what makes the 480 viable as it will keep temps on load at about 70 even with a 100mhz oc on the core - which almost puts the card on par with the 5970, but sans the microstuttering of sli or crossfire. Also it's dead silent as well.
But it's tri slot, so sli becomes hard if you're wanting to go that route.

Given the obscene width of some of these new high-end cards, I wonder if motherboard manufactures will start releasing boards with PCI-E slots spaced further apart, in order to compensate?

Well the current spec doesn't allow for more spaced slots, or you need to extend the motherboard even more. Perhaps an extension to ATX, perhaps a new spec, but it has to be expanded. Smile

If it uses color palletes better to run it in software mode. it looks better with no mipmaps and filtering. Like it's more detailed and colorful when it's all blocky Smile.

Why not? You could just release a board with less PCI-E slots, just spaced further apart. How would that be against the spec? No board size increase needed, just less slots to take up the much-needed space.

Oh and some manufacturers ARE creating new ATX specs (like EVGA with their SR-2; the HPTX)

@Leo any special reason why you went for a 480 instead of 5870?

Because a motherboard can only have 6-8 slots max under the ATX spec. (Check out the rear of your case.) So if you want for example to have 3 PCIe slots with a normally tri-slot cooler, that is just not possible currently. And new spec means new case design, which is a big risk, and will not happen anytime soon.

The SR-2 is still an ATX compatible spec, which does not fit what we want.

Because it was priced exactly the same as the 5870 and the 480 is a better card when price is taken out of the equation. Things like CUDA (not PhysX! Laughing) are a plus. Smile

Of course.

Leo is giving up on gaming to dedicate his rig to 24/7/365 folding. Laughing

Well, I have been running simulations of the human reproductive system for a long time, and since I now use CUDA to decode, err, the research data, I guess I am folding indeed for medical simulations. Laughing

Laughing

In this particular case, I believe that the term medical "stimulations" would be more appropriate Razz
